[META] FenWiki "update and nags to update" thread

The poor girl needs something in the way of personality development - at least that brings her up to "one-dimensional"...

Y'know, I'm going to give her some more personality development right now - a given name and a bit of background. (heads off to the wiki)

Edit: Done:
Quote:Pepita Ingless was abducted during a graduation trip to Venus in a case of mistaken identity - the Boskonians who had grabbed her had thought she was related to a high-ranking officer at White Sands. She was subsequently rescued by Great Justice, before she had been sent through a Catgirling Machine but after she had seen other captives go through that process. Rather than return to Earth, she joined the SEBureau and became Engineer of the Kobayashi Maru so that she could help fight against people who could do such things to innocent people.

She hates "No habla Ingless" jokes; she's heard them too many times.

And she's from El Paso. Depending on what part of Texas Ben Rhodes is from, there's a very-slim chance they may have met back on Earth...

I just took Safety off the "Image Requested" list.

I'm not completely happy with her hair, but I think it works better than the effect I was trying for... so I went with it.

I just created a page for http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Prim_Snowlight]StellviaCorp's new-as-of-Season-2 chief of R&D.

She ... has some issues. Maybe somebody would like to be her friend... if they ever meet her.

Just did a sweep through the Glossary, tweaking it slightly for Season 2.

(And I discovered something in the Glossary that wasn't on the relevant faction's page, so I copied it over. The Fivers now have a bit more content on their main page...)

As part of the ongoing VVS retcon project, I just deleted a whole boatload of pages, moved a few files around and dumped the retconned Soviet data to the appropriate page. More stuff inbound as it becomes available, as usual.

The Crystal Millennium page now has a description of the faction's administrative districts, with names better than "the whatever cluster". I also added a few notes to other undeveloped sections of that page.

The last faction that Mal added back when he revamped the Faction list now has its own page.

I didn't hang a "stub" tag on it solely because we obviously don't care enough to flesh it out - if we did, the page would have been created at least a year ago.

Okay, the Tau Ceti page has been revamped so the solar system conforms better to the recent exoplanet discoveries therein, and the talk page has a bit of metadata on various choices. Still needs a proper writeup of the planets, if not the star itself... work work work.

The Front Page has undergone a bit of a cosmetic change, more for the hell of it than anything else.

Given the nature of Fen, I think it safe to assume that there are at least three.

Bored at home (waiting for a pest-control specialist to take care of some raccoons), so I made a dent in the "Wanted pages" list. Removed some redlinks, stubbed a few more, redirected one to an existing page.

Edit: Still bored. Rendered and posted an image for http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Landau_Crater]Landau Crater.

Is there a "wanted pics" page or anything? My search-fu is weak; and I'm still looking for content to make Doug's jacket. When I have some down time, I can see about hammering out some pics (at responsible, or even requested, resolutions).

Not a page, but a category: %[link=http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Category:Image_Requested]http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... _Requested]

Note that some of these pages are about "author's preserve" elements of Fenspace, such as important supporting characters (or main characters)... but those are in the minority. Edit: And some of the characters were created by people who aren't taking part in Fenspace or the DW forum any more (for example, http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... 3%B6dinger]Katz Schrödinger), so I'd say they're fair game for illustrating without asking for guidance beforehand.

As for "responsible resolutions," the one I did yesterday - for what is essentially a throwaway reference - was 1200x675. They could be larger if the person, place, or thing being illustrated is actually important to Fenspace... but if they're too big, the automatically-generated thumbnail images won't look good.

I liked the old version of the main page slightly better, but only slightly.

A question for Mal and whichever writer is currently in charge of the Federation (possibly also Mal): is the Red Banner Fleet counted as part of the Federation Merchant Marine? (I suppose it also works as a question for Gen. Fnord and the Federation Council, as well.)

As the spacecraft of a Federation member state, the Red Banner Fleet counts as part of the merchant marine for accounting purposes. In practice they maintain a fair bit of autonomy.

I just took http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Fatima_Nuygen]Fatima Nuygen off that list.

(And I figured out what was wrong with http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... jisawa.jpg]Yayoi Fujisawa's eyes, too - the faulty eyes have been replaced, and you can now see her pupils. Now I have to figure out a lighting angle that doesn't reflect too much light from her new eyes but doesn't leave her face in shadows... but that's a project for another day. Right now, I'm making new art. Or "art.")

Before I can give any direct advice, I'd have to see what you'd done to cause that issue (I can't replicate it--Where did you get the Mats?).  My basic trouble-shooting steps would be:
Step A:  Use a different texture for the eyes.
If you're not willing to do that, try the following.
Step 1:  Turn Glossiness on Eye Surface down to 50% or so.
Step 2:  Make sure your Ambient Color on Eye Surface is set to 0/0/0.
Step 3:  Make sure your Eye Surface Reflection is set to 0%.
Step 4:  Take a test render.  If you're happy, ignore the rest of the steps.
Step 5:  Turn Glossiness on the Iris, Pupil and Sclera to about 50%.
Step 6:  Make sure Ambient Color is 0/0/0 on the Pupil and Sclera.
Setp 7:  Set the Ambient Color to whatever color you want the Iris.
Step 8:  Do a lot of test renders, futzing with the intensity setting of the Iris' Ambient Color until you're happy.
If none of that seems to work, set Eye Surface Opacity to 0% and try again.

There's a spotlight not-quite above and somewhat-in-front of her, and a distant light in front of her to remove shadows. (Exact numbers later, if needed.)

Step A is done, and it helped a lot. I'll try the rest later (as in "next weekend" - I have to be elsewhere in a half-hour).

Oh, and one more image added. If Herr Bad Moon thinks I got Toni wrong, we can use the image elsewhere...

As I'm not 100% sure who anyone in Fenspace is attached to, would someone like to show this WIP of A.C. Peters to Cobalt Greywalker and see if I'm close?
(I mean, the one, useful, reference pic I could find of the source character seems to indicate I'm on the right track.)

She's very nice Mark, and let me say thank you for putting the time in on her. She also made me go and look at all the manga and the artbook, and compare that to my mental picture of her so I could give proper feedback.

The first of the things to change is the colour of the eyes. They look if anything a little too green The eyes are a little too brightly green. I've always described them as Emerald green, but that does seem to be a little too pale and dull a green, depending on the image. Hum... If you can tone the brightness of the green down slightly it would work better.

The second thing is her hair. In the image it's very light at the end. The manga and I have it full all the way down to the small of her back, where it ends in a straight, level cut (something like how a Hime Cut (TVtropes link) ends).

Lastly, she needs to be more upfront (the Being Upfront page has been dead for years, otherwise I'd link it). While most of it is due to pose and clothing, Attim's (and thus A.C.'s) bust is larger than that in the picture. (It doesn't help that Hiroyuki Utatane seemed to increase her bust over the course of the manga, or at random times. The last two volumes are particularly obvious, though that may be down to the 8+ years between vol 9 and 10). She needs at least another cup size, maybe two.

http://eyevocal.ottawa-anime.org/beingupfront/]This Being Upfront page, which was last updated six months ago?

(Not that it matters - Dave only lists anime women, and as far as I know there's no Seraphic Feather anime.)
