[Space Station] Kickassia
[Space Station] Kickassia
#1
Kickassia - 16/Jul/2012
Kickassia is a private home.  For one or more incredibly rich Fenspace residents.  One really big problem.  Who are they?
With a little effort you can map the main financial flows in Fenspace.  This at least shows roughly where the wealth is coming from and where it is going.  Really big concentration of wealth, like 'kajillionaires' will have big impacts on these flows.  You should know roughly who, and where such people get their wealth.
There is another possibly.  It's all a hoax.  Someone with a lot of waved mylar, a flare for the dramatic, and a few imaginative friends, could put on quite a show.  They could launch the 'core' of a space habitat, then outfit it, say at an L5 location.  This could be mostly a shell with some farm bio domes, and a few people living there, using the place as an art project.  Coming and going in limos which are cheap cars with waved mylar over-shells.  Tinted windows, of course.
One rumour is that the residents are members of the Supers faction, who thought ahead, and are really enthusiastic about maintaining their Secret Identities.
Is this true?  No doubt somebody knows.  But, if they do, they've kept very quiet.

META "Kickassia"

Fenspace was the first time I'd heard of Kickassia. I wondered if it had something to do with the grunge superhero comic "Kickass" - the timeframe looks about right.

So, as I was messing with "O'Neill Station", and "Kickassia" kept coming up, I thought I might Google and Wikipedia, a bit, andventure something to be used for it. [grin]

"Kickassia" came from one of the several sleepless nights when I was putting together the master list of L5 stations. I was looking for a name, and at the same time was watching a fair bit of TGWTG stuff and, well... call it serendipity. I never really expected nor intended it to be fleshed out in any way, it was just sort of a random tip of the hat to a set of fanworks, a little reference to be mentioned but never expanded on.

so now you know the rest of the story[tm]

Thanks.
So, would it be reasonable to put the above text into the wiki?  I think it points-up the stuff on O'Neill Station, in a useful way.  If the following text is added:
"Kickassia core launched Saturday 1st November 2008.
The outfitting of Kickassia was done behind large construction screens, made of mylar film waved-up to act as solar photo-voltaic collectors, which had the dual purpose of providing construction security, and a source of energy to use in the construction.  The actual station completion was Thursday 4th July 2009, and was a remarkably quiet affair."
I think that should do.  OK?

I have no objection...

You could take the Stub tag off of the page while you're at it, since the station is "just" background colour.

Done.  I think. [grin]

Looks good - I just added a couple of cross-links so the page wouldn't be a dead-end.

I may some day examine the station in a fic... it's giving me ideas... and, just to be clear, none of then are something as mundane as "a bunch of millionaries in their gated comunity" Secrets Societies and Conspiracy theories go hand in hand in Marduk, and the prnk station idea is gold.

Sometimes the most fun idea is "all of the above, and more".
Given a rumour of Super involvement, other Supers might contact and see if there is any room left.  Where is/did Asmodeus Grey hang out? (Early Boskone base, but, only in one small corner?)
I thought using a lot of internal space and handwavium gravity control combined with holograms might give you ways of building some of Escher's painitings you could walk through.  Or, Dali?  If you've seen some of the 'Impossible in Real Life' art exhibits built in "Second Life" that might give you some ideas.  That's about as far as I got...
I don't think I'm going any further with this, so, go for it! [grin]

Yep, I was going with "All of the avobe"...

A point to keep in mind is than just because Kickassia, in 2008, may have started as a private in-joke for a group of fen... it does not have to remain so forever. Those unnamed fen -First Fen all- will keep living in fenspace, doing, well, something. And for that "something", they will always have a perfecly good space station available...

So one level may be a full Superhero Secret Base, another an experimentation lab, yet another the headquarters of a less known faction (say, Honor Harrington or Nahona), and so on.

Sounds good.
I guess it might help if the basic design separates the different levels, so that you can come and go without disturbing those in the rest of the place?
How about robot squirrels (Secret Squirrels) that run all the infrastructure, plant and harvest the bio domes, and run around through squirrel-sized tunnels?  Only speak in squeaks and chitters?  Maybe they'd hatch from the nuts of special bio-metallic trees hidden in the secret depths of the station?  The squirrels would be fiercely protective of the secrecy of the various residents of the station.
Just a thought...

The designe would even make sense for the publicy stated purpose -kajillionaries woudl certainly want their own independent modules for themselves.

Squirrels. This is so messed up that it simply cannot be on purpose.. as accidental quirks go, I love it.

If you want to mess people about more, say that the security specialist squirrels wear dark glasses... [grin]
Would it make sense for the squirrels to stop functioning and self-destruct if someone took one away from the station?

I had another idea "Stealth Tunnels".

These are open-ended tubes, big enough to fit a limo into. They absorb almost all incident radiation, and have an efficient stealth speed drive, and a pretty stupid robot pilot.

Their job is to be summoned by a particular set of frequences, which slowly changes, in a rotating pattern, and they then engulf any vehicle up to limo size. The vehicle is then flown out of the plane of the ecliptic, randomly 'up' or 'down', and left there. Or, if it's already well above the plane, to near Kickassia, then released.

The tube then returns to the upper atmosphere of Earth and dumps all the stored heat it has accumulated from absorption and running its drive, as well as from the vehicle carried. Then it recharges from the anti-protons trapped in the Earth's magnetic field.

So, you have a way of getting your limo to and from Kickassia, without being trailed by those pesky reporters.

OK, I've updated the Kickassia entry in the wiki, to include the above ideas.

http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Kickassia

This gives a station just shy of 500m high and 120m+ in diameter.  Looking a bit like a stack of disks, with some twiddly bits.

Including eight strictly separate living quarters. Cylinders 100m internal diameter and 30m high; a 10m external diameter cylinder goes down the centre of all of these.

There are no specified residents.

Hope this is OK.

I might be able to CG something along those lines... maybe.

I'd vaguelly wondered about trying to build the station to scale in 'Second Life', on maybe in a stand-alone sandbox sim using 'OpenSim' on my own hardware.  But, this would be by a long way the most complex built I've tried.  If I did build it, I could then in theory position a space-suited avatar, or two to take an image...
