The Viper started life as a simple conversion job on the Cobra Mk1F, a design notable mainly for being the first fencraft based on the Elite IP. The initial proposal was to use the space formerly occupied by the hold and living quarters to fit two extra drive units and some more fuel tanks and fitting the cockpit with an ejection system, but the result lost too much manoueverability and exacerbated the Cobra's already high fuel consumption.
Still wanting to compete in the F-EZig replacement contest and having a perfectly satisfactory engine and avionics to work with, the design team started working on a new airframe to go with them. The result was the Viper. Massing half as much as its predecessor, the result is 30% faster on conventional drives and has a turn rate of no more than nine seconds at 0.16c. The demonstration model was fitted with a 76mm railgun with a triple-feed magazine holding up to 90 rounds; other options include twin 30mm rotary cannon with eight hundred rounds per gun or a 2MW laser.
At the request of both the Extraordinary Events Agency and Great Justice, John Henry Station Industries, Incorporated are offering the Viper to government customers only.
