[Meta] FenWiki Update Thread for 2016 & Beyond
[Meta] FenWiki Update Thread for 2016 & Beyond
#1
Since the old thread's sunk and was close to 300 replies anyway, time for a new wiki update thread.

To start us off, I've finally added DeputyJones's writeup of the Groombridge 34 system to the wiki, with the necessary links to the main interstellar page and the menubox.

Okay, I guess first thing is to ask -- what holes do we have in the setting that need filling?

We could stand to see some more personalities... Who's in charge of the Potterites? Who's the Fivers' top cop, and what's the name of the organization that he/she/it works for? Who do you see about a busted droid in Coruscant, and where do you find him/her/it? And so on...

Dollars to donuts says whoever is in charge of the Potterites is calling himself Dumbledore. The question is, is he the fanfic-standard chessmaster bastard or your Magical Grandpa?

I need to get to work on the stories for the NLR... *sigh* When I can find time in between programming work.

Except that we also need to leave room for new writers to insert their own nit picky little details. It's a difficult balancing act.

Yes. Or maybe no - a "senile Dumbledore" in charge of the Potterites would explain much about what happened to the faction during the Boskone war. Hmmmmm... maybe he started out as grandpa/chessmaster, but was affected by something that made him lose his faculties slowly? (And if so, was that something natural or the result of enemy action?)

NLR likely has a severe problem with some "Conversion Bureau" memes amongst the citizens. Like, "Newfoals (Biomods)" vs "Natives (equinoid robods)" and then the additional wrinkle of telepresences, cosplay, power armor, and the like. Then of course the folks who want to be part of the Senshi Collective instead of staying. Additionally a strong split could come up in regards to The Canterlot Resort, Hotel, and Casino on the Mars Vegas strip. Some pretty memorable characters can come from the extremists, and folks who have consequences from being "fray adjacent" with some of the extremists.

A lot of the NLR-based conflicts could be taken from Fandom Drama IRL. Hm. A story about someone who has a strongly factional biomod who became antagonistic to the fandom due to FanDumb, perhaps?

Yeah, the CB idiots are going to be a major issue for them, but more in the way of a boskonian splinter faction deal that decides that the bureaus were a good idea after all because of miscommunications on the actions of the founding members of the nation. Mostly the splinter group because there's enough dilution from new immigrants to just make the roboids/poor biomodded schmucks (who 9/10 end up anthropomorphic instead of full pony) and general poniness the glue (no horrifying pun intended... okay, partially intended) that holds the groups together instead of the overriding all-consuming that many of the other factions take it to. Like I said a long time ago, think militant trekkies who keep to themselves short of complaints or a case of the nation in question/criminals in question really causing a lot of harm. Live, let live, keep out of each other's hair. Lots of 'Well, okay... good for you's going around. And R.Celestia, who nobody can figure out if she's a full-on biomod, a roboid, some kind of tupla given permanence, or (as some hushed whispers go) she's the real Celestia on vacation. Pointing a scanner at her gives blank space, and it's only the fact that she can be touched and recorded that says she's not some sort of shared delusion. Nobody's got a clue, everybody in the faction is afraid to ask, and she just smiles annoyingly while restraining Ward from trying to cut the gordian knot with a chainsaw.

A lot of the NLR conflicts would derive from the Ward Clan family drama hours (like the Skywalker Family Happy Drama Hour, but now with 100% more banjos!), those aforementioned potioneer boskonian faction that eventually gets led by Isabella as part of her two-finger salute after her brother wrecks her everything (who also can't figure out why their handwavium potions won't 'fix' people's minds and ethics the way they want), some drama about Eris and the nice long-range cordon around it while the NLR works on it, general NLR buildup and such both at the Plasket Crater/Crystal Empire (make up your darn minds!) conversion and enclosure project and their general 'you guys are building up a whole lot of logistics for people who supposedly want to stay out of trouble'-izing that unnerves people with their paranoia.

I've just created Al's Wait & Eat and a redirect to it from "Al's Wait and Eat", and Template:WikiMagic and its corresponding administrative category Pages in need of Wiki Magic. The category currently contains just Al's and itself, but I think it'll be useful. I wanted to get Al's up on the wiki despite not having its physical location (or indeed many details) defined. (The thread where I originally proposed the digital Slow Food restaurant can be found here.)

The better question would be, what was wrong with Template:Stub? Your question prompted a lot of flailing edits on my part, and then I belatedly realized that the information missing from Al's Wait & Eat makes it an unusually large stub.
EDIT: Also, everybody should check Category:Stubs occasionally to see if inspiration strikes for any of them.

Okay - unless somebody objects, I'll do a template cleanup this weekend.

And now for something completely different... Is it time to formally push the Fenspace "now" forward yet? (It's been happening informally in some writers' stories - do we even need to make it formal?)

Mal, I was looking at your recent post for Candle in the Dark, and it got me thinking as to what we could theoretically do with (as you have dubbed her) Fortuna. I was thinking, why not have her be a super-terrestrial planet? Somewhere around 7 earth masses in size, with 7 coming from the solid body, and a whole bunch of spare change coming from her atmosphere generated by ices getting continually boiled from a much more active plate tectonics system? Have it be the other major body in the system (besides europa and earth) that has life on it, if not as we know it.

Well, according to The Math (which is all we have atm anyway so we might as well use it) #9 is going to be around 10 Earth masses in size, so somewhere on the upper bound of superterrestrials to max lower bound of gas dwarfs. So it's reasonably plausible to make it superterrestrial. Beyond that and the name I haven't really any good plans for it aside from being cute in the Candle thread, so. Wink

A week late, but the cleanup's done.

Template:Needs WikiMagic takes the best of Template:WikiMagic and Template:Cleanup, and matches the naming scheme over on All The Tropes. It is now in use wherever either of the two older templates was previously used.

I've just made stub pages for the remaining "accepted" dwarf planets with names: 20000 Varuna, 28978 Ixion, 38628 Huya, 50000 Quaoar, 90377 Sedna, 90482 Orcus, 136108 Haumea, 136199 Eris, and 136472 Makemake

They're all linked from Beyond Neptune's orbit

Jake, it's like any other MediaWiki wiki, just go there and register. Once you do that, one of the admins can set you up with any extras you need.
