That book you thought you owned . . .

The irony of this is astonishing. It's almost enough to make you forget how damn creepy it is.

Yet another reason why the Kindle (and possibly other e-readers) is Not Ready For Prime Time - someone other than the device's owner has control over it.

It boiled down to the fact that amazon didn't have the rights to sell that book in the online store. So when the Rights holder notified Amazon of this fact
they had to remove them (or face some massive penalties).

I think it says more about the horrible state of copyright in our country than anything else.

1984 is not available for the Kindle. 1984 has never been available for the
Kindle.

So, Amazon accidentally sold e-books they didn't have the rights to sell, took back the copies of the book with full refunds, and said they would handle it
differently if it happened again. Truly a situation deserving of comparisons to Big Brother!

Eh, it's mostly the part where the books they sold actually were 1984. The amusement factor trumps the facts. Smile

Also, if they'd been a print bookshop, this would have been the equivalent of breaking into your house and stealing back the books they'd
unintentionally wrongfully sold you. Leaving the money on the kitchen table, of course, but it still seems a bit of a shock.

Well perhaps not good; but far more palatable.
