IST Supers and Heredity
IST Supers and Heredity
#1
A simple question, are the metahuman powers in the IST setting inheritable? If so do they tend towards dominant recessive? Do the kids get the same powers as their powered parent? Do they get the powers of both parents if both parents are metas? Do they get completely new or unique power set of their own since I seem to recall mention that the powers received are at least partly based on the subconscious?

Thanks,

M

Mm. The best answer I can give you is... sometimes. The ability to have a power is inheritable -- that was designed into the Seeder genes from the start. Sometimes kids get the same powers as their parents; sometimes not.

The subconscious thing... no. You're remembering the Wild Cards setting.

Thanks for the reply, Bob. So the potential is inheritable but the actual powers aren't necessarily? Got it. The answer works for me, I just wanted to make certain I didn't miss anything in my readings, the concept is kind of important to some of the things I'm doing for my campaign framework so i figured I'd ask. I knew the subconscious thing was from some Supers setting or another, thanks for correcting my assumption.
A follow up though, it seems like there are quite a few Supers whose powers expressed as a result of stress, is that intended as the primary trigger or does that vary from Super to Super as well?
Cheers,

Mike

The Seeder genes were designed to express powers under environmental stresses and pressures, with the intent that natural selection would then work to produce a single racial power or cluster of powers based on the needs of the species in question. So yes, that's one of the causes of powers, but far from the main one. Humanity's Seeder genes were damaged and rendered dormant not long after they were implanted in our distant ancestors, and once they were turned back on, some of that damage was expressed as basically being able to be born with a random power. (The imperfect heritability of powers is another "broken" part.)
