Hm. Did you ever hear as a kid the fairy tale about the cobbler who's on the edge of starvation until magically complete shoes start appearing in his shop? And he stays up late one night and witnesses "little people" doing the work?

(Ah, just looked it up -- it's one of the tales that the Grimm brothers collected. And here's to a short page on brownies specifically citing the clothing angle that ties them to house elves.)

I recall that fairy tale was updated by Warner Brothers and made into an educational cartoon about capitalism... er, economics. (IIRC, it's included in the sixth Golden Collection.)

That version had a somewhat different ending...
