Another distant teaser...
Another distant teaser...
#1
"There's always a price for magic, Dawn, *especially* something
like a resurrection.  If it looks like it's free, that just means
the price is hidden because it's more than you'd want to pay.
Any spell *this* powerful that an amateur can cast with only
minimal preparation...  it's a trap.  It's designed to hook you,
hook your soul, for someone or something that wants it for their
own reasons.  You'd be better off summoning a god and offering to
bargain -- at least that way when you find yourself in Hell
you'll know *why*."

"My price?  My price is *duty*, and the simple truth that I can
*never* have a normal life.  Not when my unguarded touch can
vaporize plastics and rot organics and enchant steel.  Not when I
can *never* let my guard down completely around other people --
especially and worst of all my wife.  I'll probably never have
children of my own.  I'll probably never reconcile with my
parents.  I may never even get home to *try.*  That's my price,
Dawn.  It's paid in sweat, and blood, and *gallons* of tears, and
with every second of my life that ticks away while I search for
the Earth where I was born."

..."Each and every one of you -- you're heroes.  All of you. In
fact, I can assure you with 100% certainty that there are entire
worlds -- worlds *plural* -- out there in the Multiverse where
the tales of your adventures, of your failures and triumphs, are
known, and remembered, and told.  Endlessly told and endlessly
reworked, and never, ever forgotten!  Stories of Buffy and Faith,
the light and dark slayers -- sometimes foes, sometimes friends,
*always* sisters in arms."

"And what about us?" Xander objected.  "What about the Zeppos?"

"Is that what you think you are?  Well, let me tell you what *I*
see.  You're the Round Table to Buffy's King Arthur and Faith's
Lancelot.  You're not always the lead, but you're always
important.  You're Kay, and Ector, and Gawaine.  You're Nimue and
Merlin and Vivianne."  I spun about and pointed to them one by
one.   "Giles, the blood-stained sage.  Anya, the renegade demon.
Xander, the white knight.  Willow, the red witch.  Spike, the
vampire who loves.  April and Bibi, the robots with souls.  Tara,
the lost one who will be found.

"You. Are. Legend!  Each and every one of you!"

"And what about you?"

"Me?  I'm the latecomer, the interloper.  I'm not part of the
story.  I'm here to make sure the good guys win, not win it for
them.  I've been given a thousand names in a hundred worlds and
more, but if I'm anything here, I am the Slayers' loyal wizard,
and that's all.  I fight at your side, not in front of you."

Not to anything specific, no. I knew I was echoing the title of "I Am Legend", but that itself is an instance of an older usage.
