Two more confidence songs
Two more confidence songs
#1
First, a modern classic:
The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The farther you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me
You can decide to turn your face away
No matter, cos there's....
Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong
The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time
You squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly
It will blind you
Cos there's......
Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong
Brothers and sisters
When they insist we're just not good enough
When we know better
Just look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
Something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong
Brothers and sisters
When they insist we're just good not enough
When we know better
Just look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
Because there's something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me, so wrong
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

Something Inside So Strong, by Labi Siffre
Area effect "instill enough confidence to stand up for what's right". (This was orignially an anti-apartheid anthem.)

Next, something completely different, and right up Doug's alley:
You left me like a broken doll
In pieces as I took the fall
for you, you dumb chump!
You left me free-falling like space junk
Burning up in the atmosphere of life
Well I sound like a philosopher
but I'm a fool who's off her rocker
'Cause I let you in my heart that one last time
I've had enough, made up my mind
I'm gonna get up and out and wahhh!
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
I'm cool, I'm calm
I'm gonna be okay! Uh huh
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
Take another look at me now
'Cause it's your last look
Your last look forever
Well look at you you're all puffed up
In that big red truck - but you're outta luck (this time)
Well, that's tough
'Cause I'm on fire - too hot to touch
with a chatroom full of lovers on the line
Gonna step right up. Spit shine my soul
I'm gonna be proud and loud and outta control!
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
I'm cool, I'm calm
I'm gonna be okay! Uh huh
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
Take another look at me now
'Cause it's your last look
Your last look forever
I'm lookin' in the mirror and I like what I see:
I've lost the fear & the horror that's been eating at me
'Cause being with you is like a hangman's noose
I was living my life in dead man's shoes
I've had enough. Made up my mind
I'm gonna get up and out and wahhh!
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
I'm cool, I'm calm
I'm gonna be okay! Uh huh
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
Take another look at me now
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
You're dead and gone
I'm gonna get my way
I love myself today
Not like yesterday
Take another look at me now
'Cause it's your last look
Your last look forever!!
I love myself today
I love myself today
I love myself today
I love myself today
I love myself today
I love myself today
I love myself today

I Love Myself Today, by Bif Naked, from the album Purge (collected on Essentially Naked)
Area effect "instill confidence and remove self-loathing". May have a few side-effects if the people who are gaining confidence are in abusive relationships... like, say, the relationship between NERV and the Children.
Edit: During the choruses, she growls a bit on the line "I'm calm", hinting that she's anything but...
(BTW, Bif Naked's song Tango Shoes likely also qualifies as a confidence song, but I don't want to overload the list with one performer. For those who haven't heard her music, her style is sort of a cross between Pat Benetar's and Carole Pope's...)

Very nice, I took a listen and liked her enough I grabbed the album off of eMusic. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm always looking for new (to me) artists.

I like the idea that Doug would get a pair of Tango Shoes and dance his way from trouble. ^_^
Her Choking on the Truth could be used to force a person to "see" the truth of his or her actions. Alternatively, it could be a form of mind control that made a person behave as if what Doug wanted was the truth even if he or she did not want to do so.

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
[Chorus:]
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life
This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks
[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life
Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down
[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life!

This one is odd. The first thing that came to me when I listened to it was that it'd be a good decisiveness song: the "It's now or never" repetitions stand out more than the rest. The lyrics, though, make for a confidence song. What do you think?--------------------

For years I've been envisioning it as a nonspecific battle song, but other than banging the staff on the ground during that double drum-thump, I've never actually pictured him doing anything specific with it...

You could go off in a different way and use it to create a giant copy of Doug's face (sort of like Xur in The Last Starfighter) that gives Doug the equivalent of the Sonorus spell in Harry Potter. Just the thing when needing to give a speech/orders to large numbers of people.

Possible, but something formed around repeating lyrics is more likely.
Still a good effect, maybe I should look for a song for it.

here's another possible confidence song
#11
a 'get back on the horse' sorta feel.
Rush "Far Cry"
Pariah dogs and wandering madmen
Barking at strangers and speaking in tongues
The ebb and flow of tidal fortune
Electrical changes are charging up the young
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel,
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
Whirlwind life of faith and betrayal
Rise in anger, fall back, and repeat
Slow degrees on the dark horizon
Full moon rising lays silver at your feet
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel,
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
You can almost see the circle growing
You can almost feel the planet glowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel,
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I fly through a crack in the sky
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on__________________

Mm. It's fairly easy for me to say, "Wow, a Rush song I haven't heard yet" as I have only one Rush CD and a bunch of MP3 tracks. So yeah, this is one I haven't heard. However, so far 95% of all Rush I've heard has been head-over-heels awesome, so I'm going to go with the odds on this one... As for the effect, perhaps an AOE Confidence rebuild or something along those lines?

You might want to check out Rush's 'Different Stages' collection if you can find it. 3 CDs, 33 live tracks.
Edit: actually, thinking about that album reminded me of another Rush song.
Nobody's Hero - Rush

I knew he was different in his sexuality
I went to his parties as a straight minority
It never seemed a threat to my masculinity
He only introduced me to a wider reality
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that he was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart
But he's nobody's hero
Save the drowning child
Cure the wasting disease
Hero -- lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero -- not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero -- not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying,
Nobody's hero
I didn't know the girl, but I knew her family
All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality
They try to carry on, try to bear the agony
Try to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart
But she's nobody's hero
Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero -- is the pride of purpose
In the unrewarding job
Hero -- not the champion player
Who plays the perfect game
Hero -- not the glamour boy
Who loves to sell his name
Everybody's buying
Nobody's hero
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart
But he's nobody's hero
Save the drowning child
Cure the wasting disease
Hero -- lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero -- not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero -- not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying,
Nobody's hero

Mm. I like, but I wouldn't use it in a story because it's too much of a shortcut. In a story Doug should have to work to convince people to do this, or inspire them through his own actions. Doing it with a song would be a cheat.
In a game, though... that's different.
