An odd sort of flight song?
An odd sort of flight song?
#1
With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You're a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite!
When you send it flyin' up there
All at once you're lighter than air
You can dance on the breeze
Over 'ouses and trees
With your first 'olding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Let's go fly a kite!

"Let's Go Fly a Kite", from Disney's version of "Mary Poppins".
Not much in the chorus, but those verses look interesting. I'm not entirely certain what this would do for Doug; it sounds like a kind of flight song, but the "feet on the ground" line might have some odd effects, at least perceptual ones. Maybe it takes his consciousness up flying in the visible form of a kite, while his body stays behind on the ground?

Heh. Personally, I see it as litterally turning Doug into a sentient Kite for the duration of the song! Or maybe a hang glider, since it's a man sized kite, really. Either way, you don't want to be too far off the ground when it runs out, so he'd probobly want the movie version of it, with its nice long bridges between verses. Otherwise, it could well wind up being to short to get any use out of it."I was an Otaku before those kids came along and changed the meaning of the word."

More likely the latter.
This is a great song suggestion -- I'm going to have to add it to his list.
I really ought to take up more Disney songs for Doug's repertoire (Tigger's theme, for example, and what about some of the songs from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, huh? "Substitutiary Locomotion," anyone?).

Is this "more lkely a hang glider than a kite", or "the hang glider is the most likely of all the effects suggested so far"?

Apparently I finally found something useful that hadn't already been suggested! There have been several I never mentioned which have been either rejected or assigned other effects....

From Mary Poppins again, how about "Chim Chiminey" (or however that's spelled)? As for effects, it's been suggested to me that it might enhance his probability-distorting "luck" field, and/or allow him to bestow the same sort of luck on others, for the duration of the song; either would seem useful.

Tigger's theme, for example
What might this do? The lyrics I remember don't seem suggestive, although I do get a vague "bouncy" impression which might be useful.

Or, for a similar effect if he sees it first in its original context, "A Spoonful of Sugar", also from Mary Poppins.
From "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", there's "Beautiful Briny", which - again, if seen in its original context, since the lyrics don't really hint at it too much - could provide a water-breathing effect.

I want to see what Doug would do with the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" theme song...
I believe CCBB was written up as a "Son of Ether" vehicle for Mage the Ascension at one point...

Anybody else want to see Doug use the Supercar theme song?"There's only one kind of monster that uses bullets"

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is that Tiggers are wonderful things.
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs
They're bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is that I'm the only one
Iiiii'm the only one!

Going for the _really_ obscure Gerry Anderson stuff!
Didn't this predate Thunderbirds? And, Fireball XL5 and Stingray?
Also, if Doug uses this, does he turn into the pilot Mike Mercury, for the duration??? [grin]
(If you want really, really, obscure, try "Four Feather Falls"; I'd really like to see what Doug's talent does with that - talking animal companions and telekinetically operated pistols?)
Yes, I'd like Doug to have a full set of Anderson theme tunes on board! [grin]

Hm. Maybe... I'll have to keep that in mind.

yes, that's correct. Super-bouncing, rebounding, leaping, things like that. And doing it at a dementedly hyper pace, of course.

I was thinking more of "Portobello Road", which could give him the ability to manifest any necessary object (or a reasonable fake thereof) as long as he had the money to pay for it on him...

You are, to the best of my own knowledge, correct.
By the way, has anyone else out there caught the omake that Metroanime wrote to one of his stories, in which Ranma fell into the Spring of Drowned Stuffed Tigger Toy? Very different form of the Catfist in that one. (Oh, and Ryouga fell into the Spring of the Drowned Eeyore Toy.)

IIRC, Supercar was Andersons first foray into 'supermarionation'. The basic premise involved a Supercar that was 'triphibious', ie land, air and Sea capable.
a basic overview of the series can be found at Supercar Overview"I was an Otaku before those kids came along and changed the meaning of the word."

Try this:
Supercar Theme Song
Barry Gray, circa 1959, (c) ATV Music Ltd.
Performed by Micheal Sammes (Season One) and the The Micheal Sammes Singers (Season Two).
Season One
Supercar... Supercar...

With beauty and grace,
as swift as can be,
watch it flying through the air.
It travels in space,
or under the sea,
and it can journey anywhere.
Supercar... Supercar...
It travels on land,
or roams the skies,
through a heavens stormy rage,
It's Mercury-manned,
and everyone cries,
"it's the marvel of the age!"
Supercar... Supercar... Supercar!

Season Two - changes in bold
Supercar... Supercar...

With beauty and grace,
fast as can be
watch it flying through the air.
It travels in space,
or under the sea,
and it can journey anywhere.
Supercar... Supercar...
It travels on land,
or roams the skies,
through the heavens' mighty rage
It's Mercury-manned,
and everyone cries,
"it's the marvel of the age!"
Supercar... Supercar... Supercar!

Fireball XL5 stuff as well. Some looks quite fun!

Now, there is a thought! Excel Saga/Fireball XL5 x-over fanfic? [grin]

I think I'm just going to have to see a couple episodes of this. Although I have to admit, in general Supermarionation makes me ill...

Sorry to hear that...
I tend to just look past that, at the characters, the stories, and the tech.
Each episode of Thunderbirds has at least as much sory at a modern action movie! [grin]
And, while the puppet work might cause wincing, the special effects can be quite amazing.
Still, I would like to know if the IR "camera detectors" rely on them using electronics... I don't see how they could work on an old box brownie! [grin]
