Uh huh. I was about as shocked as an Eyrie story has ever had me when I realized just -who- the rest of the Order of the Black Rose -were-... which was about three paragraphs after that first scene with them started.
More. Please, please, more.

(Now, if only the Eyrie board didn't start throwing schitzophrenic hissy-fits every time I tried to post, my online life would be just about perfect.)

much goodness, But I have a feeling I'm missing a lot of context here. I didn't get any of the new references (frown). So if someone would be kind enough to enlighten me please.
(edit): after hitting the eyrie boards I'm off to google 'samurai troopers' whatever that is-Terry

The proper series title, IIRC, is "Yoroiden Samurai Troopers", and the dub was called "Ronin Warriors"... which is inaccurate from several angles. ^_^; It was on Toonami for a while, years ago.

Samurai Troopers was, more or less, an attempt to recreate Saint Seiya.
..But make it vaguely shoujo at the same time..
It sported some of THE most utterly badass villains of the season when it came out too.
Something in the back of my mind is teasing me horribly about some of the other names for characters who attend Ohtori Academy, though. I just can't quite puzzle out WHAT it is.

Damn good stuff, even if I didn't recognize most of the order of the Black Rose. No, I never saw what's-its-name, "Samurai Troopers" or whatever it was. And is Lady Ohgami supposed to be connected to Ishiro Ohgami of Ishiyama?
Anyone notice the two female leads of Fushigi Yuugi showing up at the end -- as theatre geeks? I wonder if they're throwaways (like most of the Sailor Moon girls in NXE) or if their own divinely-linked destinies are going to kick in?
One thing annoys me greatly. I have a "forging-a-sword" scene for the Utena Step already partly written, and now I have to decide whether I want to keep it and risk being accused of copying Gryphon, or toss it out and be completely at a loss, especially for what to do with the cool lead-in I have written for it.

keep it. forging a sword is fairly standard in warrior-comes-into-his-own stories... and as long as you stay away from dwarves and wyvern blood, it should be fairly obvious that you came upon this independently...-Z, Post-reader at Medium

Oh, hey, yeah! I did - I'm much, much more of a Fushigi Yuugi fanatic than is probably healthy coming from a straight guy. Besides, those two are my favorite characters from that series, so of course I noticed.
All that said, my money's on 'destiny', since, if you'll recall, wasn't Fuu pretty much a throwaway for a long, long time? ^_^
And Techie-Yui and Miaka-the-Actress are just so many different flavors of perfect.

Wyvern blood is a maybe.
Dwarves? No.
Weapon forgings from novels:
Darksword trilogy
Crystal Shard(the introduction of Drizzit Do'Urden)
Belgarath the Sorcerer
Secret of the Sixth Magic
The First Book of Swords(Wayfinder, Mindsword, etc.)
Corum of the Silver Hand trilogy(the sword Traitor)
I'm sure there are others. I have not read Eyrie in a long while, so I wouldn't make the connection.

Or ... if you wanted to do something unusual, you go look at the story of Siegfried. Or the story of the Grasscutter. Or even, if you wanted something a little more modern, the story of Aragorn and Narsil (one of the things that I disagree with Peter Jackson on; it made Aragorn that much more of a badass when he was kicking ass and taking names with a broken sword through the first two books of the trilogy).

Okay, okay, I'm convinced. Utena's sword-forging stays in the plot. At least as long as it serves a purpose.

I love how they more or less settled a LOT of quesitons that have been lurking around the edges for a while now... while stirring up all NEW questions for people.
Incidentally, for the afforementioned Utena step.. you might find the following line utterly fascinating. It's from a book by the same guy who wrote Steppenwulf: 'Der Vogel kmpft sich aus dem Ei. Das Ei ist die Welt. Wer geboren werden will, muss eine Welt zerstren. Der Vogel fliegt zu Gott. Der Gott heisst Abraxas.' Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth by Hermann Hesse. Found it randomly while wandering Wikipedia...
Some utterly FASCINATING quotes in the book that someone had in mind when they were writing Utena, I think. Wikipedia Link to Demian entry.

Yow. Definite parallels:
Quote:
Der Vogel kmpft sich aus dem Ei. Das Ei ist die Welt. Wer geboren werden will, muss eine Welt zerstren. Der Vogel fliegt zu Gott. Der Gott heisst Abraxas.
(The bird struggles out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever wants to be born, must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.)
Boy, does that sound familiar...
And yes, SKU(/RGU) is definitely a bildungsroman, albeit strangely subverted by its ending...
I'm going to have to look for this book... Thanks!

I would have NEVER spotted it if I hadn't gotten entirely too curious. But I was checking some of the underpinnings of Utena on a lark, since they were stirring parts of other things I had researched in the past... I'd recognized elements of Jung, especially in Mikage's arc, but I was curious about what else they'd slipped in.
Of course, I'm going to have to watch the whole thing again eventually once I've done sufficient rummaging around, just to see where it all works in.

Oddly enough, the first time through I read that as "what else they'd stepped in." I haven't read enough of any of the philosophers mentioned to draw any conclusions or make any refutations, but still...

Bob, you should definitely check out Samurai Troopers (or even Ronin Warriors) if you ever get the chance and the time. It was one helluva ride, and an excellent example of the Armor Boy genre.

Incorrect. In the books, Narsil was reforged into Anduril before the Fellowship set out from Rivendell.

This is very true. But, and this may be me misremembering, Aragorn was carrying and using Narsil in combat before the Fellowship left the Last Homely House. It has been many years since I've cracked the original books, so I may be incorrect. I already got the names backwards. (I thought it was Narsil post-reforging and Anduril when it was broken.)

He was definitely carrying it, re: the flamboyant brandishing scene in the Prancing Pony, but I can't recall whether or not he used it in combat. I'll check sometime.

Also, to further support that, one of the tracks in the SKU soundtrack is, iirc Densetsu no kami wa abraxas, or some similar title.
