I'll recommend:

Kerensky & Kurita - An AU saga of the Amaris War.

Part I http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4874898/1/K ... ron_Legacy

Part II http://www.classicbattletech.com/forums ... 0/all.html

Part III is in-progress.

The Virginia War

http://www.classicbattletech.com/forums ... 528.0.html

Also, a fellow over on the classicbattletech.com forums going by the name 'cannonshop' has posted several much-acclaimed short works based on the
planet Kowloon, deep in the Lyran periphery. Many of them have been lost to various forum reorgs and updates... I have a partial collection somewhere, I'll
see if I can get something posted where it's readable.

Parts tie in with Sybil http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2810089/1/Sybil by another CBT forum author,
'Giovanni Blasini'.

The Classic Battletech Forums have a fanfiction section here which is a good
place to find fanfics. The Black Tigers books are a good read, following a SLDF regiment through the Shattered Dawn scenario (an AU of the fall of the Star
League, nod so dissimilar to the Kerensky & Kurita recommendation above in some ways.

I've made this recommendation before, but the following are excellent choices for fans of heroes in the mould of Harry Flashman:

The Misadventures Of Darius Davion I Darius And The Hound

http://www.classicbattletech.com/for...pic,174.0.html

The Misadventures Of Darius Davion 1.5 Darius And The Happy Occasion

http://www.classicbattletech.com/for...pic,109.0.html

The Misadventures Of Darius Davion II Darius At The Coronation

http://www.classicbattletech.com/for...pic,138.0.html

The Misadventures Of Darius Davion III Darius And The Heartbreaker

http://www.classicbattletech.com/for...pic,121.0.html

And Ed Becarra has a fairly new battletech fic: Fragmentation

Set well before the Clan Invasion, with a very well thought out new force in the Periphery starting to pay attention to the Inner Sphere. Focuses upon the Wolf
Dragoons and Snord's Irregulars as viewpoint characters

I'm very fond of the Suomi Warders series by Dave Wainio.
It's a 3050s-era story about a mercenary unit from the Free Worlds League, lead by a corporate heir. This is a Clan-era story, but the focus of the plot isn't on galactic politics. Rather, it's a more...personal conspiracy that they're fighting against. Most BattleTech fanfic is about big and grand changes to the universe. This is different. And well done, I think.
The author does a very good job of depicting a unique unit with its own culture, history, and tactical doctrine. The characters and dialogue are great too.
Best of all, the Suomi Warders stories are complete. 19 parts in the original arc, and a two-part additional tale that picks up some years later, providing an epilogue for the entire thing.
Fair warning:- the writing in the first couple of chapters is a little rough. Not awful, but it could have used some editing. However...the writer gets much better as he goes along.

Drak, could you perhaps expand on 'Shattered Dawn'? I read the first one or two of the Black Tiger pieces and stopped because my stomach and/or nerves couldn't take what was looking more and more like a point-blank look at the 1st Succession War. I'd be delighted to turn out to be wrong about that.

I'll second the Suomi Warders series. It's well done, there's no WTF moments, and the plot is well thought out. I go back and re-read it every so
often, and it never gets old.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Shattered Dawn is a setting based around an AU 1st Succession War where one member of House Cameron survives and managed to build
a Terran Successor State. The Black Tiger pieces bridge the Invasion of Terra through the last years before the Exodus (so far). It's been thought out
quite well, over some time and there are some very indepth resources - including an entire Technical Readout of warships, dropships etc from the various House
Navies.

Anything, here or otherwise, good for a first-timer? I just got into BT/MW from reading a Let's Play of MechCommander 1, and I'm still somewhat
unfamiliar with it.

Try this one: Drake's Demons

Fairly solid story, set quite early in the time line.

The Saotome Gambit is a rather good Ranma/BattleTech fusion - it was mentioned earlier in this thread. Of course, if you're not familiar (or don't like) Ranma, then that might not work so well. That story basically transposes the Ranmaverse characters and their relationships onto a BattleTech setting. It draws a fair bit from BattleTech lore, but it explains what it uses and weaves it in quite well.
Quite a few of the epic-grade stories mentioned here...ones that retell the major wars of the BattleTech setting and such...may not be that great a read for folks not well-versed with the series. The Darius Davion stories are funny, but I think that caters a little more to people who already know how House nobility works and stuff like that.
I'll once again recommend the Suomi Warders stories, though, the ones I linked in my post (and Wolff seconded). That series follows a single mercenary unit and cast of characters, and should be easy to understand as a straight-up military adventure tale.
Notably, the guy who wrote the Warders stories also included a lot of explanatory little notes. Take the first story, for instance. Most fanfic authors probably wouldn't bother to explain that the Draconis Combine is a major star nation with a primarily Japanese culture. Most BattleTech fans already know that. This guy does explain it, though. Briefly, perhaps - but he does explain it.

I will say, if you're not 100% familiar with the mech library in the series, hit a wiki like http://www.sarna.net as a
good companion.

I've been surfing the BT forum archives, looking over some stories that the list in the Spacebattles post missed, and reminding myself of why I really liked Cannonshop's work. The Ngo family are nucking futz, in a big way, and it shows. And the stories range from the incredible to the downright creepy.

His writing style is a bit scattershot, he tends to post things a scene at a time, and most stories are short-story length - very much in the vignette style, enough to establish a mood and a feel for what's going on and then stop.

But damn, the 'Loonies can really get under your skin. Very worth reading.

I've been trying to recall the title of a BT series I read several years ago, I think it was by Turboturtle.

Those Kowloon ones sound neat, but it appears half of them are gone - unlike newer efforts, those send me to the 'login' page on that forum, which
means they're gone.

Hunted Tribes is a BT/nBSG crossover you can find on both spacebattles forums and classic battletech forums and on ff.net
