New Fic Recommendations vs. MechaGodzilla II

A Sakura (from Naruto) peggy sue.

It's pretty fun, and some great banter. It's a... relaxed sort of fic, a kind of odd combination of slice of life with some action/intrigue while Sakura mostly successfully fixes things.

It's going on ten years since the last update, and three years since the last thing in Older Than Dirt's favorites list updated even, but I'm Not A Pirate, Honest! and Capability Smith and the Pirate Queen of Venus are a nice couple of short bits that capture some of the best of the AD&D 2e Spelljammer setting. The second is incomplete, but does at least cover a complete arc, to where you could wrap it up in a paragraph plus an epilogue scene to appraise the loot if no more complications appeared.

And then there's that title. How can you not read a story called Capability Smith and the Pirate Queen of Venus?

Event Horizon: Storm of Magic is a story from the weirder parts of the AlternateHistory.com forums: in the 22nd Century a megacorp colonization expedition to the Epsilon Eridani system finds a very peculiar arrangement of planets, all with humans and all with apparently some form of magic... The story so far follows the corp as they try to "civilize" Westeros, though later stories are planned to tackle Middle-Earth and the world of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. No, really, this is a thing that happens in this story.

This is a qualified endorsement. This won't be to everybody's taste, even if the story grabs you you're probably going to want to deck a main character or two at least once a chapter, and you're probably going to want to deck the author once every couple chapters. Despite this, the parts involving the Westerosi dealing with the "Sky-People's" machinations are pretty engaging, and watching large trucks roll over ASOIAF canon is always worthwhile.

(Full disclosure: horrible literary thief that I am, this story is making me think terrible thoughts about the future of Fenspace, but that will be brought up in the Fenspace forum if it ever comes to pass.)

I strongly hesitate to call this one a "recommendation", but for those of you into Worm?

Jared Ornstead just started a Worm SI.

He calls the canon a "dog turd" in the author's note, so he hasn't lost his delicate touch.

Pronounced "shy guy."

So, I'm guessing Taylor is already a member of his harem, with the bullies right behind her?

Be nice, calling the Worm Cannon, some thing stinky is being gentle.   Provide link please.

Speaking as someone who is very much not a Worm fan? The setting does not deserve what's about to happen to it.

There's threads dissecting this thing on both SB and SV.

The sad thing is, there was a time when Ornstead was, if not a great writer, at least an enjoyable one for the first half-dozen to dozen chapters of his stories, and it took a while for him to go off the rails. And sometimes, when he did, it was still a fun read, for at least a while. I still love how he approached Evangelion, for example. But of late, it's like he's been doing the complete opposite of the growth a writer usually undergoes in the process of building up a body of work, and doing so deliberately. It's painful and depressing to see.

Has anyone considered the poor fellow is having actual physical mental issues and slowly losing his mind - and needs professional/clinical help - as opposed to just lambasting him? Just curious. People just seem to be assuming 'this guy is an arse' as opposed to 'this guy has a problem and needs help - and may not be coherent enough to get it himself'. Shouldn't someone act as a concerned citizen and follow up? Otherwise just tearing into the guy to see the reactions seems kinda cruel, really.

I believe that's also been mentioned before. I believe at one point someone even made noises about altering the police, because based on his writing they were convinced he was a sociopath.

I think he just does it for the lulz now.

I say, he is a such a princess, about his stories. So hand him a ball, and send him home.

K sai, he's always been an oversensitive prima donna; he's left the Net "forever" several times since the 1990s because he decided that criticism of his work -- even positive, "here's how to improve your writing" criticism -- constituted persecution. He took on the alias of Perfect Lionheart several years ago in order to "prove" that under a different name no one would be able to tell it was him and thus no one would target him with the same "harassment" his original handle got. (Of course, PL was immediately identified as either Skysaber or a Skysaber tribute band, as someone here once put it.) Manytales has the right of it, sadly.

That was me. (EDIT: My memory was playing tricks on me, looks like Nectaroid gets the credit. Darn.) Honestly, I figured it was someone that got their start in fanfic reading Skysabers early work, and was young enough to follow the same 'escalation is always awesome!' approach without understanding the flaws involved.
And frankly, going by his online behaviour, there's really been little change from before Studio Aesir fell apart, back in, what, 2004? Where did the time go? He posts some stories that may or may not be decent, overreacts to criticism, leaves the internet, returns, repeat... I've never seen any evidence he's a danger to anyone, just the good old Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory at work.

Not immediately, if memory doesn't fail me, but it didn't take long(4-6 months, I think). He's the sort of guy who can't help but expose his true colours

I always wondered if 88mph was also a Skysaber alias (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3243738/88mph). The account was made around the time Perfect Lionheart's fic 88 Miles Per Hour started going seriously off the rails, and 88mph's Ninja Who Lived reads a lot like the works of Skysaber/Perfect Lionheart. OTOH I really liked his Naruto fic Pink Parasite, although that may be because he never got beyond chapter three.

For sheer gits & shiggles funny, http://www.fanfiction.net/s/10239811/1 ... th-rays-up

"Pencils Down, Death Rays Up".

It's a Mass Effect world, and the Reapers have made the mistake of invading Earth.

And the Old World of Darkness is Not Amused.

Humanity, Fuck Yeah? Yeah.

Quote:Hard light projections of maps lit the bunker, illuminating various sub-groups worked on coordinating different aspects of bringing war to the Reapers across the world.

"Alright everybody, quiet down!"

The underground bunker quieted, and the ad hoc defenders of Earth began to plan the next step of their counter offensive.

Today's focus was retaking Detroit.

"We have some important information from our scouts and…diviners."

The Alliance officer stiffly nodded at the mage dressed in snazzy blue jeans and a tee shirt that proudly boasted the slogan, 'A wizard did it'.

The mage leaned forward. "Bad news. We can't use our basic strategy of 'murder it all with lightning' this time. They're learning; they've spread apart and hardened their defenses." Disappointed sighs and grumbles came from the audience. "So we need to think of a new plan, preferably one that they can't easily figure out answers to."

An Alliance lieutenant gestured at the tactical map of Detroit.

"Well, let's think about what local resources we have we can use. What kind of unique advantages can we muster here in Detroit?" He almost managed to keep a straight face, just a small twitch of a smile appearing momentarily.

Snickers.

A voice called out, "Abandoned factories?"

There were a few snorts.

More heckling from the audience.

"Shattered glass? Boarded up windows?"

"Wild dogs? Gas stations without pumps?"

The mage smiled. An evil smile. "Abandoned cars."

Four hours later, 3,243,582 junked cars fell out of thin air and simultaneously crushed each of the 3,243,582 husks in the city.

Heh, yeah, that's a fun one. "Humanity?" "Fuck yeah." is literally an exchange between two characters that becomes an in-story meme.
