I hate that I share a country with these people.
HATE. with a burning, searing, firey hatred, we're talking bottle-of-tums-a-day territory, folks.

I'm trying very, very hard to make myself believe that she might've been being satirical, maybe playing at being Dave Barry. Unfortunately, I can't. Yes, people really are this stupid. (I'd like to add something about "especially when they're not from Michigan," but I'm afraid people wouldn't realize I was joking.)-----
Those who believed the laws of physics made things "possible" or "impossible" were mistaken. Time travel violated one of those laws. Physics took its *revenge*.

The newspaper has a website -- found it via Google, of course, and I dropped by there earlier this evening. While I can't actually read anything in the archives without subscribing, it would appear this woman is a regular writer of letters to the editor. One wonders if they all show the same... intellectual rigor.

It could of course be a ploy to discredit Connie M. Meskimen in some sort of courtroom case. Meskimen is a lawyer.
If he is the prosecuting attorney trying to put the head of a crime syndicate away, that little blurb could work against Meskimen.--------------------

Given Arkansas recent weather makes me think this may be sarcastic humour on someones part.
It's wikipidia site, but a quick read seems to match up with what I remember of the paper.
----------

----------
Go to the section after the civil war called the "The newspaper war".

Weather
March was warm, but that happens about 2/3's of the time.
Around Easter Arkansas had a hard Freeze that actually froze the ground in several parts of the state.
It damaged the newly planted corn crops and hurt winter wheat crops. Around my area it took out everyone's gardens killing most of the plants even when they covered them with pots, plastic and blankets.
Many trees lost thier new leaves to the hard freeze and people have been having to deal with fallen leaves like it was the fall of the year.

As it turns out, Mr. Meskimen is not an idiot, but a frequent writer of satirical letters to the editor. Snopes now has a page about this.

You know... its a relief to find out that it was a satirical piece..
But still... the point of it all was? To see how many people are willing to poke back and inquire about the mental capacity of the writer?_______________________________

More likely to lampoon that kind of ignorant small-mindedness. Satire always works best when it is both over-the-top and still believable enough that somebody thinks it's serious.

If we'd known his history of writing satirical letters, though, I doubt any of us would have. It's entirely possible that most subscribers to that newspaper knew exactly what it was, and without the historical context we were bound to take it seriously.
