Computer Problem - Help?

My computer is running Windows XP. It has a high speed internet connection, and a second computer in my home is connected to the internet through a wireless
connection to the box that is hooked up to my computer. The last time I used Windows Update on the other computer, the connection was lost. To reconnect to the
internet from that computer, I must type in the "Network Key". I cannot find the piece of paper with the network information that the guy who
installed my connection gave me. Would the Network Key be saved anywhere on my main computer, since it is the one with the actual physical connection? If so,
where would I find it? I've spent two hours searching for it through every likely looking icon on my Control Pannel.

no, the 'Network Key' is an encryption key used to protect your wireless connection

You will need to log into your router to get this/set this information.

What brand/model of router do you have?

When you log into _your_ machine and do Start, Run, type CMD, click OK, type IPCONFIG, hit enter, what IP addresses do you have?

The router has "Netgear Wireless Cable Modem Gateway CG814WG" printed on the bottom.

Following your directions gave me an IP Address of "192.168.0.10"

Do you also need the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway numbers that came up at the same time?

Put http://192.168.0.1 into your address bar on IE or Firechicken.

That will log you into your router.

If it doesn't, put your default gateway into the address bar like above (http://whatever_ip), but I'm betting
it's 192.168.0.1

You'll need the username and password for your router, can't help you there.

Well, you should be able to press a pen-accessible button somewhere on the router down for some period of time (10-30+ seconds) to get the router's
settings to reset (and consequently go back to a default password)... but I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're confident that you can set it
all up yourself in entirety (and can find out what password the router defaults to).

before you reset everything, try leaving the username blank and admin as the password... it's what my old netgear
had as the default.... if it doesn't work, you can still hit the hard reset, and if it does you should probably change it after you fix everything

The computer is now sort of connected, but informs me that there is "Limited or No Connectivity". Trying the repair button lets me know that the IP
address was not renewed, and informs me that I should contact the network administrator. Any ideas on this newest problem?

sounds like it (the wireless machine) is able to establish wireless connectivity, but is not recieving an IP address from the router.

Shut down the wireless PC, then unplug the router - wait ten to fifteen seconds, then plug the router back in.

Give the router ten to fifteen minutes to make 100% paranoid certain that it's back online (verify by surfing with the wired machine), then bring up the
wireless machine.

Failing that, it's time to get some local support, unless you're in Anchorage or the Valley, in Alaska ; )

Have you managed to get into the router configuration?

If so, maybe you could try setting everything to use static IPs and see if that fixes things. (Since the error message you mentioned is a DHCP thing.)

Unplugging the router and turning everything off and then on again did nothing.

Changing the setting to a static IP and restarting the wireless computer also did nothing.

I guess I'll have to call the cable company.

This just means that Windows can "see" the SSID of your network and has connected to it. However, as your computer does NOT have a
valid access key and can not get an IP address from the router. If you are using Windows to store the WEP or WPA-PSK key you can use WirelessKeyView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html to get a copy. This will not work for third party wireless
access control programs.
