Turn your Xbox into a Media Center for CHEEP.
Turn your Xbox into a Media Center for CHEEP.

I've got an Xbox and an Action Replay dongle, so I ordered a Splinter Cell game for 12$ (shipped) from Amazon, and when it shows up, we'll see what
happens.

This is intriguing to me, since it will provide a nice front end for the many many gigs of media I have on my fileserver.

I did something similar with my xbox some years ago. The computer I had at the time didn't have enough power to play files of such high quality level as
the fansubs of the day, so it made things a lot easier. It did still have some slowdown issues on some, but not usually too bad. I personally used the
"audio mod" instead of something like this. A bit more work to start up, but you aren't likely to brick your xbox doing it.

Now I have a computer that can play the files being put out, but I'm usually more interested in getting files off the hd as quickly as possible. So for
.avi files I burn them to a disc, and watch them on my dvd player that can handle divx .avi files. Kind of stuck on .mkv files though. -.- But it looks like
the current version of XBMC supports them. Except I'm not sure the audio mod lets it handle burned discs...

What I'd really like is if the Xbox 360 got mkv support. Then I'd have easily accessible machines that could handle just about anything I need.

I'm tempted just for the opportunity to play my fansubs on the TV rather than the PC, myself.

Very tempted.

as soon as Splinter Cell shows up, I'll let you know how it works.

Splinter Cell showed up last night, and I gave a swing at it..

and missed. I don't have a copy of the softmod installer that works. I've got a fresh download sitting on my machine at home, I'll try it again
tonight.

It's interesting the hoops I've had to jump through to get this - the softmod is _not_ available through conventional websurfing, apparently. I had to
log on to IRC and get the IP address for an FTP server... Welcome back to 1989!

It's because a lot of those programs were compiled with illegal copies of the official Xbox development kit. It'd be risky for a website to have them
up, but IRC seems to generally be overlooked.

Personally, I'm not sure I like this mod installer arrangement. I prefer something I can install manually so I know exactly what's going on, and that
won't brick the console if it gets messed up... (The "double dash" exploit looks promising, at least the way it's described in the thread for
it. The package that's downloadable from the website seems to be a bit more of a pain.)

(Whatever you do, it's a very good idea to have some kind of savefile that will boot something with a ftp server. All kinds of things that you can fix with
that, as long as the system hasn't been unplugged and you can still boot up games...)

The more I learn about this, the less I know.

I'm currently looking at a savefile exploit, and step 2 of the procedure is to backup the existing MS Dashboard.

I've got a restore method, too, so long as I can boot gamediscs. I can apply the 5960 update using Halo 2..

Yeah, as long as you can boot game discs, you're probably fine. The part that makes it tricky is that if the clock needs to be reset, it'll ask for
that before it'll boot the disc. And if the part that's used to set the clock doesn't work... then you're screwed.

Which is why I like methods that don't touch the existing dashboard.

your conservative thoughts on this are entirely justified. I'm now the proud owner of a brick.

yay!

VICTORY!

partial victory is MINE. I torrent-searched for the SID (Softmod Installer Deluxe), managed to boot off of Splinter Cell and load enough of the Evo-X dash to
FTP in, replaced the relevant saves, rebooted off of splinter cell and loaded SID - ran the installer routines, rebooted, and I've a soft-modded Xbox!

FTPed over the XBMC app, and it runs, and it's NEAT.

next step is to make XBMC the default dashboard..

-WG, who isn't picky about actually bricking the xbox.
