Anime with English-language themes
Anime with English-language themes
#1
The question's come up over on Usenet, so I thought I'd ask here as well, broadening the question a bit.

Which anime have English-language theme songs, opening or ending?

There are three classes of answers to this question:

1) Music originally in English, not originally for anime (which is what the person on Usenet is interested in)
Higashi no Eden - Oasis, "Falling Down"
Speed Grapher - Duran Duran "Girls on Film"
Ergo Proxy - Radiohead, "Paranoid Android"
Paradise Kiss - Franz Ferdinand, "Do You Want To"
Gunslinger Girl - The Delgados,"The Light Before We Land"
Monster - David Sylvian, "For the Love of Life"
L/R: Licensed by Royalty - Billy Preston, "Go Where No One's Gone Before"

2) Music originally in English, written for the anime
Rental Magica - Lisa Komine, "Faith"

3) Music originally in Japanese, translated and redubbed by the translators
Tenchi Muyo - Sharyn Scott, "I'm a Pioneer"

Any more?

Add Lain to the list, though I forget the title of the song. By Boa, IIRC.

Duvet.

Sailor Moon actually had some rather successful songs released by Jennifer Chi for the series, though the main theme was simply a vaguely loosely translated
version of Moonlight Dentetsu.

Transformers: The Movie had an English theme(s).

Some of the Ranma 1/2 OAVs had their themes translated to English.

A fair chunk of Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack is in english. Like the Ending, and some of the incidental music.

...and to add to the list, Big O's ending song.

I'm fairly sure one of the Gaseraki openings is in english, though at the moment all I can recall from the lyrics is "dust to dust, ashes to
ashes."
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"

Adding more to Category 1 from Usenet posts made by "The Relic" and "darthmark":

Maison Ikkoku (for ep 24 only) - Gilbert O'Sullivan, "Alone Again (Naturally)" OP and "Get Down" ED
Project A-Ko - entire soundtrack composed and produced by Joey Carbone and Ritchie Zito (Zito later produced The Cult album "Ceremony").
Harmageddon (Genma Taisen) - music by Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Mushishi - Ally Kerr, "The Sore Feet Song"
Wolf's Rain - Steve Conte, "Stray"
GITS: SAC - Scott Matthew, "Lithium Flower" (ED)

No, I'm not checking for duplicates...

Oh, yes - Giovanni Wassen (original requester) and Dave Watson supplied much of the information I gave in the first post in this thread.

End of Evangelion -- "Komm, Susser Tod", despite having a German title and being in a Japanese-language film, is sung in English.
Edit:  Category 2, except it isn't a theme in the sense we're really meaning here.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Black Heaven yet, which used "Cautionary Warning" by John Sykes as its opening theme (amongst other uses).

That was not a disguised plea for someone to do it. In fact, I was wondering if I could do it myself this afternoon, and trying to figure out if I had all the
right tools.

Still, thanks in advance.

Category 3.5: The original Ranma 1/2 opening was translated into singable lyrics, but never (to my knowledge) actually performed in conjunction with the anime.

Unless I'm mistaken, Texnohlize (sp?) had Juno Reactor's Guardian Angel as an opening. Worked very well with the imagery.
