I'm... trying to figure out what the interest is.
I don't mean to be snarky or anything, but what's it got that makes it more interesting than the other dozen-odd fantasy MMO's out there?
(Honestly curious, I'm not much of a fantasy MMO fan, but if there's something there I'd at least -look- at it

But.

I was tempted to look at Aion, because of the overall high production values - lavish cutscenes and creative quest mechanics that are more than 'go here and kill x', for instance. The flight thing seemed interesting - a game where everyone can sprout wings sounded awesome.
Finally, the Aion character creator is incredibly powerful; the amount of face and body shape morphing you can achieve in Aion is to some degree better than City of Heroes. Granted, you then still have to wear gear and equipment, but Aion also allows visual customisation of armour without altering its stats - you can 'reskin' gear to look different.
However. However.
I too do not want that invasive stuff on my computer.
I need to investigate the ramifications of this myself, to see just how bad what we're dealing with is - but I've had rather bad experiences trying to get stuff like that off a machine before, so this makes me very, very, wary. While I'm not giving up on Aion just yet, until I do some reading and fully understand the ramifications of what's being talked about... for the time being, it looks rather doubtful that I'll purchase the game.
And let's be clear - I was planning to buy it.
Edit 2: I do have Exteel running on my backup desktop, which is another GameGuard protected title. I've not had issues over there, but it does bear mentioning that I don't use that machine frequently enough to really know if there are any issues. Plus I dunno if I would have installed that game if I knew about it. As I mentioned, I had a devil of a time rooting out (pun intended) stuff on a family computer not too long ago, so...
Edit 3: Of course since I also did buy Spore, despite knowing it had SecureROM on it, I dunno if I've really got any leg to stand on here.
Edit 4: And as someone just pointed out to me, I bought Mass Effect too. If I'm trying to stand by my principles regarding this sort of software, I'm doing a terrible job of it.

My only real complaint with GameGuard is that it seems that it doesn't actually stop people from finding ways around it.
Much like Warden, its intended purpose is Punkbusting.

My problem with Gameguard is that it *really* fucks with your system. It hides processes, which can cause problems - on one of my older computers, the fans
were controlled by a program that stepped them up pre-emptively in relation to the last 30s of load, instead of waiting for temperature. GG made the computer
think it was IDLE when it was using 100% load. The list of things it screws around with is quite extensive.
Compared to GG, SecuROM is kid's stuff, and far less offensive.

Not that it makes THAT much difference, but, Bioware fixed the majority of my complaints with the DRM packaged with Mass Effect. To the point where I was
willing to let it be installed on my gaming rig. The big one being that it no longer installs a rootkit; the DRM is only in effect when you launch the game.
And y'know, I can live with that. That doesn't bother me, really.
GameGuard, on the other hand, runs all the time, and worse, silently updates itself. It IS a rootkit in the worst sense.
If they want to protect against cheaters, release it via Steam. You do NOT need full root access on my box to prevent cheating.

Also, unlike GG, which will be in that game for life, EA and others using the Securom eventually relax the restrictions. They've removed (or disabled) the
Securom limits on a lot of their games.

That's a good point - it's a far cry from the copy protection which publishers have eased up on for the titles I brought up...to something like this. From what I've been reading in the time this thread's been posted, it sounds likely I'll be giving this game a miss just for that. Meh.
