Looking for free filk
Looking for free filk
#1
Earlier today, a newcomer on the SJGames forums asked what "filk" is. The best way to find out is to listen, so, I've pointed him at http://www.prometheus-music.com/eli/virtual.html]The Virtual Filksing and http://www.tomsmithonline.com/freestuff/index.html]Tom Smith's freebies page, but was wondering whether anyone knows of other sources of legal free filk... Anyone?

Nope. Those were the two I would have recommended myself.

You could also point them at the TV Tropes page on Filk. It has a fair amount of links and examples, which may be just what you need.

Weird Al?

Many of Weird Al's more famous songs would qualify, wouldn't they? At least, for a broad definition of "filk". I'm thinking of
"Yoda" and "It's all about the Pentiums", for example.

Then there's "The Jedi Drinking Song" by the Brobdinagian(sp?) Bards.

And "Falling Down on New Jersey," which is actually based on an *old* whaling song "Going Down to old Maui," IIRC.

And I don't care what anyone says, I *still* love "Banned from Argo," even if Leslie Fish *does* kill anyone who requests it.

Yes, some of Weird Al's stuff is definitely filk, but he won't call it that.

Depending on your definition of 'free' and 'legal', a few good keyword searches on Youtube should turn the trick.

Some suggestions: 'Joe Bethancourt', 'Heather Alexander'... Wink

It's a question on the SJGames forums - I have to stick to the letter and the spirit of the law.

Is she at the point where she kills anybody who requests "the don't play 'Banned from Argo' song" yet?

Don't take this as gospel, but I think people start dying if somebody says the words "banned" and "Argo" too close together in a
sentence in her presence.

I do have to feel for her... She has a whole lot of other great stuff, yet Banned is the one we all want to hear. Apparently she never thought that highly of
it because she'd thrown it together like the night before its first performance or something like that, so she wasnt as happy with the finished product as
ones she had more time to polish.

Which is a shame because I agree with the rest of her 'annoying' 'banned' fans. Its perfect just the way it is, and what I love in filk. Great
tune, catchy chorus and more than a bit of humor.

Yep.

Now, me, I still need to replace my long-vanished cassette copies of Leslie Fish's "Cold Iron" album...
