I...

wait...

wut?

It's like, if the crew and Eyrie Productions all took acid before writing UF.

When I realized it was done by Hideaki Anno, I thought "Why the hell didn't he keep making stuff like this? Who could be depressed after making
that?"

Guys? Are you freaking SHITTING me? You didn't already know about this?

This was part of my anime fandom background from way WAY back. I first saw this in like 1985 or so. (The SDF-1 Macross with the carriers replaced by both the
Arcadia and Yamato is a particular favorite image. ^_^)

Okay... that was flippin' epic. I WANT MOAR!

ETA: Of course, I know that's not gonna happen. But hey I can dream, right? Oh, and now we all know where Gryph gets that line for the opening of his
fics, "I have a message from another time..."

BTW, I'm going to see if I can fit that whole schpiel into DSKS somewhere...

Wait, wait, time out. I haven't looked at the link, but bunny girls can mean only one thing....

YOU GUYS JUST NOW DISCOVERED THE DAICON VIDEOS?????

Those (there were 2 - Daicon III in '81 and Daicon IV in '83) were made by the guys who eventually went off and founded Gainax. There are copyright
problems (unauthorized use of the Playboy bunny costume and of ELO's music), so there may never be an official release (but it was released, in
Japan, in a limited amount, back in 1988). But then again, that's what everyone said about that rights-hell known as Kimagure Orange Road, and
look what AnimEigo finally got permission to release.... Here's a link to Gainax's Daicon
page (in Japanese) and a Daicon fan site, as provided on Wikipedia.

I first saw these at a con about 15 (or more) years ago, when they were played as filler entertainment for the masses while the cosplay judges were off making
their decisions. This must have been at the old Anime East in New Jersey (maybe the year the GitS movie had it's NAm premiere there?), or maybe Otakon in
Baltimore (before Otakon exploded), or possibly Katsucon or Nekocon down in Virginia.

I'm sure he probably did get it from Daicon, but this is actually from the 1st track (Prologue) on ELO's 1981 album, Time
(the next track is Twilight, which was heavily used in the video):

Just on the border of your waking mind

There lies another time

Where darkness and light are one

As you tread the halls of sanity

You feel so glad that you are able to go beyond

I have a message from another time...

Jeane, I was going to go ahead and quote that whole thing. Just didn't want to seem like I was hijacking the thread with DSKS stuff. (^_^Wink

ETA: Oh, and I dunno if Gryph was actually at either of the DAICONs where those videos were showed. He may have seen it second-hand, but given the copyright
issues that all but snuffed it out of existence... I more strongly suspect that he has that line because ELO is part of his music collection. In the end,
though, it boils down to one of us having to ask him.

Man, I got shown that my freshman year in college. Had a friend that turned her into a Teenagers From Outer Space character, Marie Daikon. One of the few
characters that mine was genuinely afraid of (when one is a Dragon who can be the size of the USS Nimitz, it takes a lot to make him nervous; Marie was
enough).

Holy shit, blast from the past. Daicon III/IV and Otaku no Video were my first introduction to anime, they played in the anime room at Starfest '93.
Needless to say, it... kinda warped my expectations.

I have a head for useless trivia, and expound ad naunausem. It's a problem. I do try to cite when possible, though (keeps one out of trouble)

I also had that ELO album back when it first came out back in the day, (which is why I knew where that quote was from). I looked up the lyric though. I'd
be pleasantly surprised if Gryph was at Daicon III or IV, though, since that was a con in Japan.

Ah! I knew I'd seen a reference to this somewhere! Pulled from the EPU boards, in particular the
annotations for Symphony one, Movement one:

Quote: 1 This opening line comes from the prologue to Electric Light Orchestra's "Twilight", on their 1981 album Time. It was suggested as the tagline
for Future Imperfect by Kris "Redneck" Overstreet, I think during development of Twilight, and has appeared on almost all FI stories written since
(the most notable exception being The Vastru Encounter, which for obvious reasons substitutes the opening-screen line from Marathon, "somewhere in the
heavens... they are waiting").
