  Maleficent

Peg and I just saw Maleficent this afternoon -- and we both say, go see it.  It is visually spectacular, well written, and just as subversive of "traditional" Disney fare as Frozen was.

Five finger discount on Video Madness!

SInce the old thread is full, here's a new one. This might, I suppose, fit in the AMVs forum, but it's original animation produced for the song, rather than clips from animation set to music.

Anyway, is it wierd that my reaction to this situation would not be "OMG creepy doll, lock it up! Burn it!" but rather "Give doll eyepatch and butterfly knife, go on awesome adventures together?"

I mean, if the world was supernatural enough to have an intelligent/possessed doll that can move by itself, there would have to be other cool stuff hiding in the corners, right?

Or maybe it would just murder me and turn me into its replacement, but then I'm a possessed doll with monster movie bullshit magic, so it's still a win once the agonizing death part is over.

Because absolute zero isn't cold enough for the Dark Kingdom!

You had your dose of random automotive news from me, now have some random science. Actually, does making something colder than absolute zero qualify to be call SCIENCE! instead?

There must be some way to tie this to PMMM, since they're already using magical girls to fight the Dark Energy driving the universe apart.

  Jay Lake
Posted by: DHBirr - 06-03-2014, 03:32 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

Currently, Schlock Mercenary's site includes a cartoon drawn by Howard Tayler, "Clockwork Departure," specifically to commemorate Jay Lake, who died Sunday.  His writing included a clockpunk series beginning with Mainspring.
The reference at the Schlock site was the first I'd ever even heard of Jay Lake.  To judge from the comments people attached to "Clockwork Departure," that was my loss.  He wasn't quite 50 yet.  The saying, "Taken too soon," comes to mind.

If you don't normally read Schlock Mercenary, I nevertheless urge you to visit the site this week at least to see "Clockwork Departure."

240 years of precedent down the tubes

Since the founding of the United States there have been few things that haven't changed. One of those things was a simple rule, the United States does not negotiate with terrorists ever. Over the weekend the President decided that we would trade five known terrorists currently residing in Gitmo for one hostage soldier. His explanation and justification was that he was trading POW's with another government. Tell me, what country does the Taliban rule. Are they not a fallen regime now recognized as a terrorist group which makes the soldier a hostage of terrorists and not a POW. What impetus is there now keep the terrorists from taking more hostages to get back people that they want or need. Remember, these are the ppeople who have sworn themselves to our destruction, don't give them what they want.

I was trawling about for news about the new Sailor Moon Crystal, and found this little tidbit about Viz, the company who's producing it.
Namely, that they acquired the rights to the entire Sailor Moon catalog (all seasons, 3 movies, unedited) with plans to release them both in subtitled and eventually (newly) dubbed form.

Needless to say, actually seeing the old shows may soon be a lot easier than it has been in decades, given the crazy rights spillover of different seasons, and I'm seriously intrigued to see what some of the more modern voice actor talent these days could make of a new Sailor Moon dub (particularly one not deviating so sharply from the source material).
