  Shadowrun Returns - Dragonfall
Posted by: Shader - 03-07-2014, 04:44 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

So rather then toss one of the trauma packs on the old thread, I'd start a new one.
I just completed the new DLC for Shadowrun Returns... apply named Dragonfall.

Let me just say... wow. Now this is a story. Used the four characters that were given me and well there were a few surprises along the way.

I'm annoyed that I missed the Kickstarter for this, but still I completed this all the way through without having to resort to cheats as a Elven Sharman with a side of Mage.

How did I finish it?
 - The opening 3+1 survived ... which is good. Considering the stakes and what we went up against. ("Berlin is still standing. I'll count that as a win.")
 - Freed APEX
 - Got Glory to open up and learned her backstory (if ever there was a hook for a story or sequel its there)
 - Learned about Eiger's past and got her respect.
 - Got a civic center named after me

 - got a prophecy about the future.

Above all, it was FUN. And I connected with all the characters. When I get more time on my hands I'll probably do a re-run with a different character.

Now all I gotta do if try to find an artist to paint/draw me a pic of "Dreamer" and I'd be golden.

I'm having a really frustrating time finding a reasonably priced replacement bracket hinge for my Toshiba Satellite L875D. The right hand side one snapped off close to the base, where it connects to the hinge assembly. Last thing I need when hunting a job is having a laptop I can't close
and take with me when want to go somewhere I can do some quiet job
hunting at.
Have found it at notebookparts.com in Hagerston Md about hours drive away from where I live. However when I've tried calling them to verify if they have the part on hand nobody picks up (front desk does but they merely connect you to the parts desk phone). Left a voicemail and waiting to see if they will call back.  (A full 30-40 dollar difference in price versus getting it elsewhere)/

The consensus is that http://huvrtech.com/ is a hoax and probably viral marketing for something else entirely, but what? And who's behind it? Considering the famous names who appear in the "BELIEF" video below, it's someone with deep pockets... What happens in December when the counter on the website catches up?

Brough to you by the Civil Defence

Album here

An interesting piece of history maybe. It says a lot about how the Irish State saw itself at the time, and says some very different things to Protect and Survive and the like. It takes a fair amount of care about retaining and protecting livestock and milk-producers and has a particularly heavy emphasis on fallout defenses as opposed to the initial explosion of a nuclear weapon. It doesn't get to the direct effects of a bomb going off until part IV.... it's almost an afterthought.

Clearly, this was written by people expecting to not actually be bombed on purpose, as it generally assumes power supplies and infrastructure will remain mostly intact. Whether wishful thinking or not depends on how cynical you're being. The wind blows in off the Atlantic so there's a chance of avoiding a nasty dose...

That said, it's an odd book. And a rare thing nowadays to find. But it cropped up recently.

Also applicable to Colony drops, impact events and the death of Bono. And probably more fucking useful than those poxy iodine tablets.... those yokes were a farce.

Funny how many of these I write in response to one of Dartz's threads...

Time: Slightly after http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/topic/10549]the events described in this thread.

"Daddy?"

Noah looked up from his report and smiled at Helen. "Yes, sweetie?"

"Why are we going to Phobos?"

"I thought you wanted to visit Kohran and Makoto."

"I do! But Kohran-big-sis and Makoto-little-sis are on Deimos. Deimos is not Phobos."

Noah stifled a chuckle - Helen had picked up more than a few habits from her mother, and saying something matter-of-fact with a completely serious tone was one of them. "Well, Yayoi was busy, and we promised Kokoro that she could have some time to herself for a while, so we couldn't just fly to Deimos ourselves. We had to buy passage."

"We bought a hallway?"

"Not this time. In this case, 'buying passage' means paying somebody to take you somewhere."

"But Capt'n Garret isn't going to Deimos. He's going to Phobos."

"That's true, but Phobos is close to Deimos. We're going to meet Ms. Taliaferro at Phobos, and she'll fly us over to Deimos."

"Who's Ms. Tolliver?"

"Renée Taliaferro. She works on Odyssey, and she plays guitar with the band Bombastic Hush. Kohran asked them to play for her new show."

"Oh, wow! A real guitar player works for you!" Helen thought for a moment. "She could have come to Stellvia and gave us a ride."

Noah stifled a wince at Helen's mangling of the language. "Well, yes, she could have, but I had another reason to want to ride in this ship."

"Daddy. You're a human. You're not supposed to multitask."

"Where did you learn that word?"

"Takami-big-sis taught it to me."

"I'm not surprised. But I'm not multitasking, at least not the way Takami means it. I'm looking around this ship, trying to guess which parts Sora designed herself."

"Did Sora-big-sis make this ship?"

"Captain Garret tells me she was one of the people who made it."

"Oh." Helen looked around. "I don't see her here."

Noah carefully did not ask whether Helen was looking at the ship the way Honami was teaching her to see things. Neither of them said anything for a moment.

"Noah-daddy?"

"Yes, Helen?" Whatever she was about to ask, it was a Serious Question. She'd called him "Noah-daddy."

"Why don't I get to see Sora-big-sis very often?"

That was the most serious Serious Question she'd asked in a long time. Noah sighed. The Scotts had an agreement - Serious Questions got Serious Answers - but how could he answer this one without making Helen feel sad?

"Is it something I did?"

"No! No, Helen, you aren't the person who did something wrong."

"Was it something you did, daddy?"

Noah bit his lip. "I think Sora might say so, but I still don't think I was wrong."

"Did Sora-big-sis do something wrong?"

"She doesn't think so."

"Daddy. Did Sora-big-sis do something wrong?"

"Ask your mother."

"Mommy isn't here."

"Ask Yayoi."

"Yayoi-big-sis isn't here."

"Ask -"

"Daddy. Serious Questions Get Serious Answers."

Noah didn't think that habit of Helen's was funny any more. "I know. But I can't give you a Serious Answer. I can only tell you what I think the answer is."

"But you aren't telling me."

"That's because you need to hear what other people think, too." Seeing that Helen was getting upset, Noah quickly added, "All right, I'll tell you. My parents taught me some things that don't really make sense here in the Convention, and one of those things was that only two people marry each other."

"Sora-big-sis married uncle Mal and aunt Teena."

"That's right." Allowing for a generous definition of "marriage," but Noah didn't want to confuse Helen. It was close enough to the right term.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Did you make Sora-big-sis cry?"

"I don't know. I never saw her cry, but she doesn't tell me those things. Yayoi or Kohran might know."

"Did you make Sora-big-sis run away?"

Noah sighed deeply. "Not directly, but I think I didn't do a good job of helping her grow up, so she thought she had to leave."

"Why did Sora-big-sis run away?"

"Sweetie, that's another Serious Question that I can't answer."

"You don't know why Sora-big-sis ran away?"

"I know. But it hurts to talk about it."

"Oh. Yomiko-little-sis told us about the Boston War in school. She said it hurts a lot of people to talk about that."

"I think maybe Yomiko said Boskone, not Boston." A quick image of the Boston Tea Party mixed with handwavium flashed through Noah's mind. "She's right, and this is something that happened during the war."

"Daddy, don't hurt yourself!"

Noah smiled a bit. "I won't. But tell Kohran and Yayoi that I said it's okay to talk about who you're named after."

"Mommy says I'm named after Helen of Troy. She told me that story."

"I'm talking about your middle name."

"Oh. There's somebody else named Yoriko?"

"Ask Yayoi and Kohran."

Helen saw the look on Noah's face. "Okay."

They sat together for a moment.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I made you sad."

"No, sweetie, you only asked some questions. The sadness was inside me, waiting to come out."

"Oh."

The wind is howling like this swirling storm insideCouldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried
Don’t let them in, don’t let them seeBe the good girl you always have to beConceal, don’t feel, don’t let them knowWell, now they know
Let it go, let it goCan’t hold it back anymoreLet it go, let it goTurn away and slam the door
I don’t careWhat they’re going to sayLet the storm rage on,The cold never bothered me anyway
It’s funny how some distanceMakes everything seem smallAnd the fears that once controlled meCan’t get to me at all
It’s time to see what I can doTo test the limits and break throughNo right, no wrong, no rules for meI’m free

Man dies of starvation after benefits cut.
Posted by: Dartz - 03-03-2014, 03:20 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (15)

What do you get when you combine Conservatism, Austerity, the obscene myth of the 'welfare queen' and the almost Victorian sentiment that life must be made as miserable as possible for those on benefits, just so they know who worthless and shit they are?

ATOS. Which has, effectively, just killed a man

They're one step shy of bringing back the workhouse....

Quote:44-year-old died months after sickness and housing benefits were stopped following Atos fitness-for-work assessment

Mark Wood, 44, was ruled fit for work against the advice of his GP and despite having complex mental health conditions. He weighed 35kg (5st 8lb) when he died. Photograph: SWNS.com

The family of a man who starved to death four months after his benefits were cut off has called on the government to reform the way it treats people with mental health problems when it assesses their eligibility for benefits.

Mark Wood, 44, who had a number of complex mental health conditions, died at his home last August, months after an Atos fitness-for-work assessment found him fit for work. This assessment triggered a decision by the jobcentre to stop his sickness benefits, leaving him just £40 a week to live on. His housing benefits were stopped at around the same time.

The Oxfordshire coroner, Darren Salter, said that although it was impossible to identify the cause of death, it was probably "caused or contributed to by Wood being markedly underweight and malnourished". He weighed 5st 8lbs (35kg) when he died; his doctor said his body mass index was not compatible with life.

Wood, of Bampton, Oxfordshire, was not told his housing benefit and employment and support allowance (ESA) had been stopped, and struggled to survive on the £40-a-week disability allowance that remained. He was reluctant to ask relatives for help and they were unaware his benefits payments had been removed until shortly before he died.

Concerned about his patient's condition, Wood's doctor, Nicholas Ward, wrote a letter for Wood to pass to the jobcentre in support of his benefits application, stating that he was "extremely unwell and absolutely unfit for any work whatsoever".

The letter, presented to the inquest, stated that his anxiety disorder and obsessional traits had been made "significantly worse" because of the pressure put on him by benefit changes. It continued: "Please do not stop or reduce his benefits as this will have ongoing, significant impact on his mental health. He simply is not well enough to cope with this extra stress. His mental and medical condition is extremely serious."

It was not clear whether the letter reached the jobcentre.

Dr Ward told the inquest the Atos decision was an "accelerating factor" in Wood's decline and eventual death, according to his family. Wood told housing association staff he was very distressed housing benefit had been cut off, and by letters about rising rent arrears and warnings from the electricity company his supply would be cut off. Many letters were unopened, so he was unaware he needed to visit the jobcentre to reapply for support, his sister, Cathie Wood, said.

He was a "sweet and gentle" person, she said. "He didn't deserve to die. He wasn't harming anyone."

Her brother had struggled with undiagnosed mental health issues all his life, which made it impossible for him to work. He was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder in his late 20s, and had an eating disorder and cognitive behavioural problems when he died. He was sacked from his first job because his employer said he was "unable to follow instructions".

"We worked for years to create a place for him to live safely. But that stopped when his benefits were stopped. He tried so hard to survive," Ms Wood said.

She is to write to David Cameron, who was her brother's MP, and to the work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, to ask them to acknowledge that the system is not working for vulnerable people with mental health issues.

"I would like Iain Duncan Smith to stop talking about this as a moral crusade, and admit that this whole process of reassessing people for their benefits is a cost-cutting measure. I want and Cameron to acknowledge the personal costs of this flawed system. This is not just someone being inconvenienced – this is a death," Cathie Wood said.

She is angry Atos did not seek medical evidence from her brother's GP, and made the assessment that he was capable of preparing to return to work after a half-hour interview at his home. The Atos report concluded his mental state was "normal".

Cathie Wood wants the government to put new safeguards in place for vulnerable people when removing their benefits. She believes her brother was unable and possibly unwilling to convey the seriousness of his condition to the Atos assessors and should have had an advocate to support him.

"He was quite a proud person. He would have wanted to be seen as normal. He was desperate to get by as normal," she said. He was reluctant to call for help from his family. "He didn't want to impose on our mother. He wanted to survive without her help."

Wood's vicar told the inquest that he was a man of "dignity and integrity".

Between April and August 2013, Wood's BMI dropped from 14.1 to around 11.5. The inquest heard that a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for a man. The inquest noted that he had developed an eating disorder.

"I am not saying that the government shouldn't reassess people's eligibility for benefits, but someone other than my brother should have been told that he had lost his benefits. This is an inappropriate process for people who are mentally ill. The Atos test is crude; they are not capable of making a judgment on complex mental illness in half an hour," said Wood.

Tom Pollard, policy and campaigns manager at Mind, said: "We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mark Wood. Unfortunately this tragic case is not an isolated incident. We hear too often how changes to benefits are negatively impacting vulnerable individuals, who struggle to navigate a complex, and increasingly punitive, system.

"We know the assessment process for those applying for employment and support allowance is very stressful, and too crude to accurately assess the impact a mental health problem has on someone's ability to work. This leads to people not getting the right support and being put under excessive pressure which can make their health worse and push them further from the workplace.

"We urgently need to see a complete overhaul of the system, to ensure nobody else falls through the cracks."

An Atos spokeswoman said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Wood at this difficult time."

A DWP spokesman said: "A decision on whether someone is well enough to work is taken following a thorough assessment and after consideration of all the supporting medical evidence from the claimant's GP or medical specialist."

"Our sympathy goes out to the family of Mr Wood."

On Thursday, a government minister apologised after it emerged that the Department for Work and Pensions had written to a woman asking her to begin "intensive work-focused activity" although at the time she was in a coma.
