The followup to Shinji Ikari Raising project.....
Scene Courtesy of Cobalt Greywalker. Technically a little later in the story.... until I get a handle on what I have left.
I lost a scene with Anika and Nene discussing what it meant to be a 'brothe/sister', one between Ford and Shinji discussing fenconomics and Shinji asking her if there might be another reason for people to be nice to him. And the phrase 'Klatchian Coffee Liquer'
Quote:As he woke up, Shinji found it a bit odd how human it actually felt. As he sat up on the examination bed in the lab, he found that underneath the medical gown he was wearing (and idly wondering why if Prometheus Forge was so high-tech they hadn’t come up with something that didn’t leave the back exposed) his body was acting far too human-like for comfort.
Thus it was right at this time when A.C. walked in.
“Good morning Shinji.” A.C. smiled at the android, a twinkle in her emerald eyes the only hint that she was quite aware of the issue the young man was having.
Shinji nodded, trying to take his eyes off the beautiful woman. This was harder than when he’d first arrived, as she wasn’t wearing the figure-hugging (no, don’t think of that) catsuit but a long black dress showing her full cleavage (pink elephants, don’t think of pink-ACK!) and her long, long legs through the near waist height slits of both sides (is she even…NO!) as she swayed in.
Shinji swallowed as she turned to one of the side benches, and swallowed again when it became obvious the dress had no back right down to the top of her (she’s not…DON’T) behind, showing (Oh kami…) the pale tops of each (Pythagoras’ Theorem is a squared plus bu-ARGH) buttock.
A.C. walked back towards Shinji carrying one of the scanners he’d seen about, and to the young man it seemed she was stalking him like a cat that knew its prey wasn’t getting away.
“Don’t worry Shinji.” The raven-haired cyborg told him. “I didn’t have my wicked way with you while asleep.” She smiled, and Shinji had to fight another swallow. “After all,” the cyberneticist’s voice took on a husky purr as she leaned over, “it isn’t any fun if both sides aren’t enjoying it.”
Shinji wanted the ground to swallow him up out of shear embarrassment and arousal. Then his eyes widened in realisation, and A.C.’s smile went from sultry to mischievous as she winked at him.
“Like I said,” her voice tinged with some humour as she stood up straight, “it isn’t any fun if both sides aren’t enjoying it.” She manipulated the scanner device, warbles and beeps emanating from it. “Everything looks good. Your clothes are behind the curtain.” She nodded to the side, where the curtained off area looked unchanged to before. “Unless you would like a hand? I might have to perform a more…thorough…examination.”
Shinji could feel the flush this time, and the lack of slowdown he was expecting. The second mischievous wink made him blurt out what he was thinking.
“Will you show me the differences?”
A.C.’s smile widened as her gaze turned a bit more frank in its appraisal.
“I may get a bit carried away and go into intimate detail.”
It was the way the cyborg said the word ‘intimate’ that pushed Shinji’s courage past the limit, and he dashed behind the curtain like he was setting the 100 metre sprint record.
“Aw…” A.C. wined playfully. “I didn’t get to enjoy that cute tush of yours.”
From behind the curtain came a sound much like the squeak of a small furry animal that knows that it is doomed.
“So,” A.C. stated in a much more normal tone of voice, “we’ve proved that the overheating issue is fixed, and stress tested it in hopefully a more enjoyable fashion than sticking you in one of the greenhouses or a steam room. You’ve gotten some experience in dealing with embarrassment and arousal now you won’t pass out, and believe me Shinji Ikari there are plenty of ladies out there who want to be the one to make you a man.”
The rustling behind the curtain stopped suddenly.
“A nice, somewhat shy young man with a cute butt? For Serenity’s sake, half the unattached Venus and Jupiter adherents will want to chase you. And let’s not mention how many women want to give you a hug. And more.” A.C.’s tone turned softer. “You’re still finding yourself Shinji, and one of the things you’ll have to deal with is people knowing your template’s, your, history and making assumptions.” The cyberdoc’s voice turned amused. “Flirting back like you did earlier will probably throw them a bit however.”
There were a few moments of silence before the sounds of movement resumed behind the curtains.
[NOTE: The dress A.C. is wearing is the same one Attim wears in the hospital in volume 4 of the manga.]

| The Big FFML-verses |

Just reminiscing about the old FFML/rec.arts.anime.creative days of the 90s, and the big anime/fanfic of those days.
From a purely personal POV, I believe that the big fanfic of those halcyon days were Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Bubblegum Crisis, and Tenchi Muyo. I'm actually basing this as much on those big mega-crossovers by Bailesu and Chris Davies, as much as anything.
Now Our Hero Doug has gone to BGC-verse, and is going to Sailor Moon-verse at some point, but from a quick search through the yuku archive I can't seem to find much or anything at all about a Ranma or a Tenchi Muyo step.
What exactly would be the driving conflict for Ranma, though? It's not as if there's a Big Bad to menace people, though Happosai is pretty much the default antagonist. Him or Cologne. Or an OC.
For Tenchi, it pretty much depends on which continuity you use. And if you use the original OVA, you have to contend with the fact that the three goddesses who created the universe are hanging around a lakeside house enjoying quiet days, punctuated by the Earth blowing up every once in a while.
Then there's the later, early 2000s anime fanfic surge, which saw a ton of Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing . . . hmm . . . what else . . . this was before Naruto/Bleach . . . but after Evangelion . . . . No, I think that's it.
Yeah, actually, looking over the list of official crossovers, Doug's never gone into a shounen-manga world, has he? I wonder how he'd deal in that situation.
As for the slightly older anime fanfic, that too merits some thought. I am of course talking about the Dirty Pair, Akira, Megazone-23, and the various Robotechs. And possibly Urusei Yatsura. I got this list from vague memories of the self-insert anime from around the late 80s, early 90s, like Undocument Features (there was another UF-type fic which also involved a bunch of college kids getting their hands on motorcycles from anime and turning bits of their college into spaceships thanks to the Dirty Pair, but the title escapes me).
Somebody here already did a Dirty Pair steplet. I would like to see what Our Hero Doug would make of Akira (probably try to take down both Tetsuo and the government), Megazone-23 (same), and the various Robotechs (no idea, maybe organize a motorcycle race?). In Urusei Yatsura, it would be pretty interesting to see Doug as being the voice of sanity and reasonable discourse, while surrounded by super-violent, melodramatic, hormonal teenagers who regularly make reality break down and cry.

Looking over the Classified Information from the Evawiki, which parses with what I remember from ages-ago reading of the translation of the special booklet that came with End of Evangelion, I have to ask--though once again I expect no answers--whether the events of Evangelion are theological or "scientific."
Say, if Our Hero Doug was looking at an Angel (or even Rei), what would his mage sight see? Celestial? Alien? Elder One?
Looking at the Classified Information, it seems that the Angels/Lilith/Adam were sent here by Neglectful Precursors--that is, aliens. Which means that for all the religiously-themed nonsense of Evangelion, it's all "science."
Of course, remember that for the DW-verse, magic is what's needed for the Grand Unified Theory. Therefore the Neglectful Precursors could have been both magical and scientific, cause they're Precursors and thus nigh-all-powerful (it pretty much says so on tvtropes).
But still, the Precursor theory is not from the tv series or movies proper, but rather a licensed video game. Therefore it may not have been the authorial intent. Further, there's no reason to say that the Evangelion-verse that Doug leaps into is one which had the Neglectful Precursors, but rather had a pretty funky version of the Abrahamic God running the show.
Still, what would Doug see when he looked at Rei and the Evas and Angels?

Having finished re-reading DW 5 and its whole Celestial/Avatar thing, I have to wonder about Glory.
According to both my memories and the Buffy wikia, Glorificus is a hell god and not a demon. If I remember correctly, Buffy and Giles both were fairly rocked by that revelation--that they were fighting a god. That she was a hell god didn't seem to make much difference.
Of course functionally Glory wasn't all that different from a demon. She was in a Ben-container, but had demon-y powers like super-strength, super-tough, and spell-casting. Also, color-coordination. That last may not be a demon power.
However, given that Glory is a god, if a hell god, does this mean that in the DW-metaverse, Glory has a Celestial overself? That is, Buffy-verse Glory is an aspect of a higher being? Which one? she's probably [possible spoiler?]not the Warrior, since I believe that that position has been taken in the Buffy-verse.
Of course, I don't expect any answers about this since it would probably spoil the story.
Still, something to think about.

So, after years away, I'm back after re-reading all the official DWs and starting on Dead Bang.
One of the things I noticed is that Quincy's motivations are lot like our dear beloved Suzumiya Haruhi.
Both hated having to live in a boring old world and decided to make the world more fun.
Of course, Quincy's way of doing it was in imitating a super-villain, right down to the monologuing.
Just a thought.

| RFC: Factions and Fandoms |

Taken from the UFP thread, here's a first draft of a "Factions and Fandoms" article for the wiki.
What have I missed? What have I gotten wrong? And should this be a stand-alone article, or a section at the top of the "Faction Guide" page? (I'm leaning toward the latter, myself, and have laid out the formatting to suit that option.)
==Fandoms and Factions==
===Extremes===
"Science fiction and fantasy fandom" is a complex web of identity, with a spectrum that ranges between two extremes: Fandom Is A Way Of Life, and Fandom Is Just A Goddamn Hobby. Because Fenspace is what it is, it steers closer to the FIAWOL extreme simply out of necessity. It's a cold, mean universe out there and when your fellow Fen are your best shot at surviving in it, you tend to cluster together.
This doesn't mean the FIJAGH extreme isn't represented in Fenspace, although many of the people at this side of the spectrum are still on Earth. They still care about fandom, but their families and careers are more important to them. A supermajority of the hobbyist Fen who are Up are what Fenspace calls "Generalists," and many of them are what the FIAWOL crowd identify - rightly or wrongly - as "[[Fendane]."
This isn't to say that all Generalists are in the FIJAGH side of the spectrum, or that the Factions are made up only of Fen from the FIAWOL side. Most people are fans of more than one thing at a time. FIAWOL isn't meant to mean just Trekkies, or just Warsies, and so on; it's a generalist statement and we all are, as fans, generalists.
=== Differences Between Factions and Fandoms ===
A fandom does not automatically equal a faction. Just because somebody likes Property X doesn't mean there's a large or even a small group of people who like Property X and want to bring Property X's tropes out into the real world. And even if there is, these people might be more interested in Property Y's memes.
Conversely, a faction doesn't always automatically equal a fandom. For example, [[Jupiter] and its moons are claimed by the [[Browncoats], but for the most part the population in and around Jupiter is Indonesian. Does this mean there's a subtle but strong underground current of ''Firefly'' fandom in Indonesian culture? No, it means the Browncoats offered a lot of work that they couldn't handle on their own and a lot of Indonesians jumped at the chance to find decent pay that didn't involve getting looked down on by Australian racists.
For another example, the [[Crystal Millennium] wasn't set up because everybody loved ''Sailor Moon'' - there are likely Senshi out there who hated ''Sailor Moon'' when it first ran. The Senshi made a point of being inclusive. They only run the show on [[Venus] because [[Serenity I|Tanith Curtis] and her closest associates were scary-good organizers, and by the time they hit their destination they made it a fait accompli.
Also, some people hold a factional citizenship just to make things easier, without actually identifying as that faction. How well this works depends on the faction; it's a little easier to be an independent ship operator in the [[Warsies] than in the [[Trekkies], for instance.
Finally, a faction can form - with difficulty - without an associated fandom. These factions are small and tend to be inconsequential in Fenspace, but a leader with sufficient drive and charisma can catch the Convention's attention and make a name for the faction. The premiere example of this in Fenspace is the [[SOS-dan], and the groups in charge of some [[Fen Companies] form factions in all but name.
== Joining a Faction ==
New fish from Earth will join whatever faction they think will get them what they want. Being a fan of the property helps - it cuts down on culture shock, if nothing else - but it's only one factor among dozens of possible considerations. One man joins the Federation because he always wanted to be an engineer on the ''Enterprise'' and the merchant marine's hiring. Another man joins the [[Barsoomians] because they're offering land grants around Hellas and he always wanted a ranch to retire to. One neckbeard joins the Senshi not out of any love of anime but because he just wants to see scantily-clad women running around everywhere. And then he's disappointed that so few of them are fashion models.
To join a big, established faction that isn't just a general-interests club, you go in, sign the local EULA, agree to pay the taxesSometimes called membership dues or whatnot, but let's be real here. and boom, here's your passport, welcome to the club citizen. That's citizenship and nationality in a nutshell. There's no set limit on how many factions you can be a citizen of, so you can in theory catch 'em all... but after about the first three or four, the psychological demands would be overwhelming.
