ASP.NET question |

Rob's comment in his "home server" thread is on-target for me, too -- when I have a technical quandary, I bring it here, and I never fail to get an answer (or a dozen answers ). And I have a quandary now.
In addition to my "real" work at my new job, I've been picking up a little ASP.NET on the side -- one of the tools I use in the course of my day is a web-based manager for the website content processes I oversee, written in-house in C# and ASP.NET, which is now my code to tweak and refine to fit my needs. It revolves around a GridView which is dynamically bound to a datasource in the page's PageLoad event, its contents determined by a SQL query that is generated by clicking on/selecting options on the page itself before hitting a "refresh" button.
What I'd like to do is add column-sorting to this GridView. I've already learned that if you don't bind the GridView to the data source at design time, the grid's built-in sorting functionality just doesn't happen. My admittedly crude and primitive efforts haven't gotten me very far. I've tried to assign handlers for onclick events to the columns as they are first accessed through the grid's RowDataBound event, but the results seem to require javascript functions in the page to handle those events instead of a C# method in the codebehind. And it doesn't seem I can use those functions to call the C# sorting method without a rather odd and involved option that I can't seem to make work anyway.
So... does anyone have any advice to offer? Am I overlooking something obvious? Is there a clever hack to get around the late binding limitation? Should I look for a third-party grid component?
Thanks.

Home server - what do I want? |

(Amazing how often I think of this forum as a tech resource...)
I need to set up an internet-connected server at home so that I can make some files available. Now, when I think "server," I think "2U rack-mounted box connected to the SAN and backup tape library, with firewalls between it and the Internet." That's overkill for what I want here.
I'll need to set this up so that only people with a password to be able to download files. A web server, or something that's equally as easy for a non-technical person to use, appears to be indicated here. I assume a firewall of some sort is also necessary - the firewall in most DSL "modems" is designed for incoming traffic, not outgoing traffic. While a FTP server, a wiki back-end (preferably the same one that FenWiki uses), and a VPN host (I have a static IP address, but nobody else in the possible VPN does) would be nice, they're future projects, not essentials at the moment.
I don't yet know what OS is going to be on this box - recommendations there would also be appreciated, but no OS-wars, please. The hardware will be a PC out of my spare-parts box, so definitely not cutting-edge. Or even "trailing-edge," probably.
While a turnkey solution would be considered - time is tight and I'm busy - "free" trumps "easy" here, and I do have security concerns about turnkey solutions in general.
What do I need, and where do I get it?

You might want to write them a very special letter right away: they've slipped a "forced arbitration" clause into their terms of use that takes away your right to sue them or participate in class action suits against them. And the only way to opt out of it is in writing, with a real signature, mailed to their litigation department.
More information here.

Useful when trapped on small rainy islands...
Quote:My lovely horse, running through the field
Where are you going, with your fetlocks blowing in the wind?
I want to shower you with sugar lumps, and ride you over fences
Polish your hooves every single day, and bring you to the horse dentist
My lovely horse, you're a pony no more
Running around with a man on your back, like a train in the night...
Power...
A very, very pretty but short-lived horse. That throws the rider when the sax solo played.

(For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People
Joss Stone
Hey, oh ah, mmm
Ha ha
Hey now
For God's sake, got to give more power to the people
For God's sake, give more power to the people
There's some people up there hoggin' everything
Tellin' lies and givin' alibis about the people's money and things
And if they gonna throw it away, you might as well give some to me
Yeah they seen and heard it, but they never had a misery
There some people who are starvin' to death
Never knew but only hate us, and they never had happiness
If you don't have enough to eat, how can you think of love
You don't have the time to care; it's crime you're guilty of
For God's sake, you got to give more power to the people
For God's sake, give more power to the people
Cut this jive and see who's got the power
When they run out of it, the world's gonna be a ghost
They know we're not satisfied, so we begin to holler
Makin' us a promise so they throw in a few more dollars
There's no price for happiness, there's no price for love
Up goes the price of livin', and you're right back where you was
So whatever you got, just be glad you got it
Now we're gonna get on up and get some more of it.
For God's sake, got to give more power to the people
For God's sake, gonna give more power to the people
For God's sake, oh, you got to give more
Please, tell 'em what you think about it
Yeah
For God's sake, don't leave it too late, heh
For God's sake, gonna give more power to the people
For God's sake, aren't you listening to the people, yeah
Listen up, it's getting to ya
Its the power, yeah
For God's sake, give more power to the people
Please come on now, open up your ears
Mmm, hmm
Mmm
Give more power to the people
For God's sake
For God's sake
You really 'ought to give it now
Hey yeah
Oh, give more power to the people
Mmm, give it
Give the people in Doug's Area of Effect powers based upon that person's personal god/goddess. You have someone that follows a healing god/goddess you get a healing power. You follow a war like/evil god/goddess you get that type of power. Each power is unique to each person. If a person does not follow a god/goddess that person gets a power based upon the most commonly followed god/goddess of the others in the Area of Effect (whether they want them or now.) Whether this is actually calling upon the gods/goddesses of the people or just what they think would be up to Bob. If it was a god/goddess I'd think this would either be a never play or last resort play song.
