Purrfect Meddler was created as a homage to Stephanie Brown, the woman known as Spoiler/Robin/Spoiler Again/Batgirl (With a touch of Gold Diggers added to explain the 'Purrfect' once I realized Meddler was taken and I blanked on everything else). Steph is a subject of some controversy in the DC fandom, as her run on Batgirl was often considered one of the best comics out there. Then DC decided to erase the old universe and replace it, with Babara Gordon de-aged to Stephs age and turned intro Batgirl again, with Steph simply vanishing and every fan asking about her at conventions and panels getting utterly no answers. When I heard Staff Fighting was coming, I decided to make Meddler as a homage.

And now CoH is about to cease to exist. I'm not saying she's cursed to destroy universes and flee to new ones... But she DOES have a record of breaking things.

... I'm gonna go reroll her in DCUO and see what goes wrong there. (Aside from an odd sense of recursion) Smile

  [Story][Season 1] Here's Jack
Posted by: Ace Dreamer - 08-30-2012, 01:28 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (17)

Here's Jack - 29/Aug/2012
Fall 2013, Ganymede/Luna.
As Brains suspected, his Uncle Jack had left a way to get in contact.  It turned out he'd attended the rest of the con, in particular Noah Scott's presentation.  Brains wished he had gone to that, but he'd still been repairing bits of hotel.  So he'd have to make do with Uran's recording.
The Whole Fenspace Catalog.  People would be picking bits of that out of their teeth for years, decades maybe.  Brains wanted to know how the other worlds worked.  The tech was interesting, but it was how the people lived that he really wanted to know.  Did they love and hate the same way?  Had they solved, or got different approaches, to any of Life's great problems?  On a personal level (yes, it was petty), was he recorded in fiction on any of their worlds?
They'd handed over the last of the Boskone prisoners to the Patrol.  Attended the last funerals.  Steam cleaned the SS Champ; vacuum would help on the way back to Luna, and they'd do a more thorough clean-up there, just in case any nasty little surprises had been left behind.  The Gibson Girls chose to fly back under their own power - they said they needed time to think.  Uncle Jack joined Brains, Uran and Doctor Venus in the SS Champ.
It was the first time Uncle Jack had visited the Lunar home.  They'd crossed paths a few times in the last five years, but Jack or Brains were always on their way to somewhere else.  Brains said he trusted Jack, as a member of the family, and Jack pursed his lips and said that was OK.
Brains was pretty sure Jack was impressed, though he controlled himself pretty well.  Brains had a good enough artists eye that he spotted the little pauses, the controlled casual look around.  Jack seemed particularly taken by the garden in the central courtyard, shaded his eyes, looked straight into the 'Sun'. "Nice" was his comment.
Then Brains showed Jack his guilty secret.  The mauler pit.  While only a skeleton the scale of the immense tear-drop shape was clear.  Jack was clearly taken aback.  "I know you play with big toys, but this is a bit much.  They'll crucify you for this.  Didn't you follow your mother into CND?  Now, tell me that isn't a warship."
Brains explained how it kept niggling at him.  How it only left him alone if he came and did a bit more work on it.  "Thermite, or cement.  Burn as much as you can and fill-in the rest of this pit.  Then go and have a nice holiday. Somewhere you'll really enjoy.  Read a few books by your favourite authors.  Turn your brain off."  Brains was quite certain his Uncle Jack was totally serious.
"I'm not sure that'd wreck it thoroughly enough" admitted Brains.  "Will it fly?" asked Jack.  "Yes", said Brain, unhappily, "I've waved about 12% of the Function Nodes and 10% should be enough to make it work".  "So, when've you organised the Boskone raid?" asked his uncle.  Brains just rolled his wheel chair back and forward, unhappily.
A week later they were within the orbit of Mercury.  An emergency skin on the skeleton had made the thing nearly invisible, and Uran had flown it by remote control, as they accompanied it in the SS Champ.  All the filters were on maximum, as they watched the stripped hulk be pushed into the Sun.  Uran's other half was wearing her red-headed human body, and hugging Brains, then Jack, then Brains again, as she dabbed at her eyes.
"I never even got to launch her", she said.

[RFC] What does Brains do next?
Posted by: Ace Dreamer - 08-29-2012, 10:19 PM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (20)

OK.  Brains is scared.  And upset.
He thought he'd be safe at SerenityCon, and he'd got his family with him, and he saw they could all have died.
The mauler was an idea he'd played with as a "totally safe means of transport", but, "completely impractical".  If the mauler was the only really major thing he built in his life, maybe the last thing he built, story logic might justify it.  But, I don't think Brains is "finished" yet, so it doesn't really make sense.
What sort of thing might Brains reasonably do about his fear?  I'm pretty sure he will try and build or create something.  I don't think he'll try and hide away in his 'safe' Lunar home.  But, unlike some, he's a strong believer in non-violence.
What makes sense in terms of Fenspace?
And, what can he do that fits in with his idea of being "obscure"?

Shegomania, Chapter 2 : Clear & Gothic Danger (season 1)
Posted by: Ross Van Loan - 08-29-2012, 03:35 AM - Forum: Fiction - No Replies

Wandblume cum Shego regarded her pile of amassed training regimes with a look of disdain. The program that came the closest to her needs was the gloriously Red-Starred Spetsnaz relic probably once owned by the biggest-biceps in the Party. She was especially fond of the ultra-low-altitude haystack jumping : those guys were nuts! After that it was no fun at all. Just a lot of ritualistic hazing & endless drill.
“Not. Fun. At. All!” She declared, poking the tower of training with her sinister middle digit. The pillar tottered just as the owner of the, not as precisely ordered as it had been, library entered. He carried a tray bearing a steaming mug of  Blue-Mountain coffee for his hard working partner in almost-not-crime, and his own coffee-filled laboratory canister.
Stricken by rapt horror, Van Loan watched a not inconsiderable portion of his Military History categorization collapse into a a chaotic drift of generals, battles and time periods.
My library! My Drakken Decimal System!” He would have dropped the tray and fallen to his knees in the proper display of dismay but for the fact that the coffee would have stained his first edition Vom Krieg.
“Hey honey! Thanks, I needed that!” Wandblume grabbed a mug off the tray, a single droplet of expensive coffee barely missing the cover of the  priceless codex. “
Without even thinking about it, Van Loan, hardly even disturbing his  vessel of joe, swept up Carl from his ignominious sprawl. Then, mentally enumerating pi -- the urge to rampage, albeit ineffectually, didn’t pass until just past the fifteenth post decimal position-- Van Loan managed to regain as much composure as he ever possessed “...3288.” He concluded, under his breath.
“You’ve destr...researched the wrong section, Shego. Try Kingdom : Soft Science , Phylum : Psychology , Class: Mammalia ,  Order : Magnorder Primate , Family : H. Sapiens , Genus : Female , Species : Shego. “ He raised a booted foot ; nudged a bearing-mounted brass and wood library ladder in the direction of the, to his mind, straightforwardly defined section of his beloved, Brobdingnagian bulk of books.
Shego was too busy savouring her java to follow the obtuse instructions  right up to the moment that her mental ego-recognition software perked her up at the sound of her very own syllables. “I have my own section?” There was a complex arrangement of mild suspicion, ego-stroking, and delight all wrapped up that utterance.
Drakken took a sip of his brew. “Yup, right up there.” He gestured with the steel, ceramic-lined thermos bottle that was adorned with, ‘Danger : Superfluid!‘  “Top shelf, under the holo-bust of Freud.” She tossed off the remainder of her brew ; adroitly ascended the charmingly anachronistic vertical assist  device. Coffee-sipping Van Loan appreciated  the captivating  clockwork quaver of  the climbing costume-clad keister.  He called up, “ With that perfectly engineered gimbal-mount, I’m reclassifying you under Hard science!”
Almost atop the ladder, Wandblume’s brain processed the world’s most arcane appealing-ass assertion.  Her dry inner-voice whispered : ‘Gimbal : rotate, swivel, fulcrum. See ass.’  She put a smirk in her voice and an affected twitch in her rump as she reached ascension apogee. “One day I might even return the favour.”
***
The array of micro-cameras had been scientifically arranged according to what was known about the library’s owner. As a result, they were clustered exclusively within the Metaphysics niche that Drakken kept as a museum to those books that he hunted and culled-down to unique status. Each sole survivor was added to the section bearing the holo-bust of  Erich von Däniken.  It was a bizarre hobby ; possibly illegal, but  It had been classified by the surveillance team as,  'mostly harmless'.
“Oh, good reversal!” The beer can and pizza-box littered kitchenette featured a svelte blonde beauty whose figure surely wasn’t possible amidst all of the caloric wreckage. She made a hash mark in Shego’s favour on her wall tally labelled ‘Zingers’--there were more marks than wall-- as she watched a tiny, fish-eyed video-feed of a tiny Drakken shaking an equally tiny fist at a black and blue crescent distorted Shego at the extreme edge of the field of view.
“See if I’ll tell you where...” Van Loan’s petulant voice was cut-off by Wandblume’s smug, “Shegomania? Cute title, Doc!”
The blonde took a pull off of the can of Baka Biru at her elbow ; made another mark in her girl’s favour. “And Wandblume pulls ahead by two quips, but these two have always been neck-and-neck!” It was the voice of an experienced sportscaster.  She didn’t hear the imposing man enter behind her , and consider her with twin featureless silver discs where eyes should have been.
“Man, these things don’t fit well at all!” He took them out to reveal a a normal pair of cornflower blue eyes. “Hey, Togusa, how’re the master criminals?”
“Entertaining, as usual. He’s introduced her to something he’s written about her : some sort of collection of observations. Probably just bad poetry and pictures of her sleeping.”
“Probably. You know, Togusa, we’re probably the very first victims of Remote Stockholm Syndrome ever! When we’re...if we’re ever done I’m going to have you write a paper on it.”
***
The wall display showed the two surveillance officers laugh, not entirely heartily, at the thought of  their predicament. The woman, within the shadows of her egg-shell chair, was only visible as the thrust of a truly impressive bust and the flare of tips of lustrous brown mane.
“ Mikuru, did our bosses really arrange for potentially unstable individuals to formulate an inherently negatively charged secret operations squad as a bet?
The response from the other bosom that rose twin, impressive atolls out of the darkness of  the other egg chair was as dry as a martini.
“Mikuru, of course not. Why would they take accountability for our past misdeeds?”
“I hate being a minion!”
“Alpha minion, dear!”

  Yet Another Fic Search
Posted by: jpub - 08-29-2012, 12:56 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (1)

So I lost the link to a fic, and I'm having a hell of a time finding it.

Here's what I recall of it:

-Naruto

-while practicing some space/time sealing using kage bunshin, he ends up giving people (himself, Jiraya) in another world dim memories of the future

-Jirayia of course runs back to Kohona after things have already chaged a bit

Anyone recall it?
