For all you Verizon customers out there...
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 08-10-2012, 10:32 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

I've recently started training as a Verizon Technical Support Representative through KGB USA (formerly known as Infonxx).
Now, unfortuantely, I'm not troubleshooting for internet.  I'm handling plain, ordinary phone service, however... I have every intention of moving into the FiOS side of the house as soon as they'll let me.  (That may be pretty soon, given how they're hiring left and right.)
Once I do get there... I'll be more than happy to help out any Verizon FiOS customers.  Just don't expect me to divulge anything that isn't publicly available knowledge.  I will say this: public utility commissions on the East Coast play a real mean game and sometimes demand some pretty damn odd things.

  Fic Search #6.2820842
Posted by: ECSNorway - 08-10-2012, 06:05 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (1)

So, once upon a time there was a Macross fanfic titled "Legend of Megaroad", and it was pretty good.

Something happened to the author while he was writing Book 2, and he vanished. (Word has it he died.)

FFNet has up through ch. 19, but rumor tells me that the author had posted up through chapter 25 of book 2 to his personal site.

Does anyone have copies of this saved anywhere, by any chance?

If you're interested, go here and watch before it gets pulled down!

I was warned that

Quote:"You'll have to navigate pop-ups and ads, but it does
work. Avoid the "download-start now" buttons (DON'T push them) and wait
for the episode to load."
However I found that with ad-block and no-script it worked just fine and no pop-ups appeared, though YMMV of course. Just a heads up about that.
Quote:When the screen says "watch high quality & fast streaming after the ads", hit the arrow, sit through an obligatory 15-second ad, and it hasshins!
You may have to let it buffer a bit to start. Anyway, the episodes get
thumbs-up --  robot tanks really are robot tanks (intentional gag?),
Makoto is a sweetie with a pervy mind, a small (maybe false) hint of a
romance/jealousy triangle, planet Gamilas looks incredible, and Yamamoto-chan (the fighter pilot)
is a badass. Joe Bob says check it out!
Just finished watching #3, which includes the Warp Test and the Floating Continent battle at Jupiter. AWESOME.

  Well, this'll be interesting...

So, on July 31, my girlfriend, the forensic entomologist, got her first real job at West Virginia University. Which is, approximately 1300 miles from where she is right now. So, next week, we're moving her to Morgantown (just south of the Pennsylvania border, about 80 miles from Pittsburgh). I'll be out of pocket for a week, so you guys have fun without me.
And, apparently, since I'm crazy about this woman, I'm going to move to Morgantown too. Not sure when, but it'll be no later than the end of October, because that's when my lease is up. If a job offer comes before then, then that's when I'll go, but I will be going no matter what the case.
Interesting, indeed. Now, if I could just get the lizard brain to stop panicking, everything would be golden.

  I've got a new job
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 08-09-2012, 03:07 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (18)

What the title says.  The commute to MLA has been worse than I thought it would be when I took the job back in June 2011; what with having to take Peggy to her job in the morning too (for those who don't know, it's a long story involving medical reasons for not driving, and train and bus schedules not lining up conveniently), I'm driving about two hours to get to work every morning.  It's grinding me down majorly.  (There are a couple other reasons, but that's the main one.)  So... once I'd given MLA the year my sense of honor required me to, I began looking for a new position.

I had my first real bite early last week, and it turned into an avalanche -- initial phone interview on the road home from work last Thursday night (8/2), a face-to-face interview less than 24 hours later (with supervisor, IT head, and CEO in rapid succession), an offer less than four hours after that, and me accepting (and emailing a scan of the signed offer letter) before 10 PM.  I gave my notice at MLA on Monday, and I start at the new place on the 20th.  The money's the same, but I'll be commuting far less, and spending less on gas and auto maintenance, so my effective take-home will be a bit higher.

Since everyone was so interested in my job search from 2009-11, I just thought I'd let you know.

Did Bill Gates Steal The Heart of MS-DOS?
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 08-09-2012, 02:50 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

Computing folklore has long held that Microsoft created MS-DOS by stealing the code for DRI's CP/M operating system.  An independent software forensics expert
with modern investigative tools has finally taken up the challenge of finding out the truth once and for all, and has written up his results for the IEEE's Spectrum magazine.

I am a cyborg, training with the Panzer Kunst Gruppe here ot Grunthal, Mars. I've been with the Gruppe since 2012, earning my blades in 2013. While I have to be careful about some things, in general I should be pretty much able to answer anything about how and why we train, how we fight and what we do here. Or, what life is like for those of us who've traded meat for metal.

I've included an image of one of my personal blades with the hallmark from the Temple of Syrinx. The serial number has been erased.

Edit 1: Further proof provided to the moderators. Including the origin IP of my posts.

An oddball idea. But something might come from it. Or not. (And yes, it is Jet answering. May not answer everything, or even entire questions. I'll try make some sort of something together.)

If you know me from anywhere, it's probably because I'm Luc from TVTropes, or Lubaf from various other places.

I'm a longtime lurker, particularly of the Other People's Fanfiction forum. Probably gonna keep on lurking, but felt the need to join anyway.

Thanks
