Super Munchkin Madness |

Okay, my brothers love nothing more than to utterly annihilate each other in a game of Munchkin. Bear in mind, this is being played out on a basic Munchkin set with no expansions. The only real notable house rule was that we were playing to level 15 (because level 10 is just too damn boring).
Joe was at level twelve, Dwarf with Halfbreed, Super-munching with Thief and Wizard, with Short Wide Armor (+3), Pointy Hat of Power (+3), Hammer of Knee Capping (+4), Staff of Napalm (+5) and the Boots of Running Really Fast (+2 for running away). So he's effectively fighting at level 27 here. Not much in his way at this point. He kicks down the door and finds a Level 18 Squidzilla. Since he's not playing an elf the -4 disadvantage does not apply to him.
The other two siblings playing see things differently. One used Potion of Idiotic Bravery on the Squidzilla, bringing it to Level 20, and then the other used Wandering Monster to bring a Level 20 Plutonium Dragon into play. And then same brother used Mate to make that TWO Level 20 Plutonium Dragons. So, Joe used Cotion of Ponfusion (+3) and Flaming Poison Potion (+3) to bring him up to 33, and then hit himself up with Doppleganger to double it up. 66 > 60, so Joe took the fight, along with six levels and fourteen treasures.
PLOT BACKFIRED! GAME OVER! (^_^)

No Joke: FDA declares Diamond Walnuts "illegal drugs" |

The FDA has apparently decided that Diamond's on-package claims of walnuts' heart-healthiness render them medication, and demanded that they be taken off the shelf and submitted for testing, regulation, and prescription by a licensed physician.
You heard me.
WALNUTS.

WARNING LETTER
VIA OVERNIGHT MAIL
Michael J Mendes, President and Chief Executive
Diamond Food, Inc.
1050 S. Diamond St.
Stockton, California 95201
Re: CFSAN-OC-10-11
Dear Mr. Mendes:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed the label for your
"Diamond of California Shelled Walnuts" products and your website at
www.diamondnuts.com. Based on our review, we have concluded that your
walnut products are in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic
Act (the Act) and the applicable regulations in Title 21, Code of
Federal Regulations (21 CFR). You can find copies of the Act and these
regulations through links in FDA's home page at http://www.fda.gov.
Website
Based on claims made on your firm's website, we have determined that
your walnut products are promoted for conditions that cause them to be
drugs because these products are intended for use in the prevention,
mitigation, and treatment of disease. The following are examples of the
claims made on your firm's website under the heading of a web page
stating "OMEGA-3s ... Every time you munch a few walnuts, you're doing
your body a big favor.":
• "Studies indicate that the omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts may
help lower cholesterol; protect against heart disease, stroke and some
cancers; ease arthritis and other inflammatory diseases; and even fight
depression and other mental illnesses."
• "[O]mega-3 fatty acids inhibit the tumor growth that is promoted by the acids found in other fats ... "
• "n treating major depression, for example, omega-3s seem to work by
making it easier for brain cell receptors to process mood-related
signals from neighboring neurons."
• "The omega-3s found in fish oil are
thought to be responsible for the significantly lower incidence of
breast cancer in Japanese women as compared to women in the United
States."
Because of these intended uses, your walnut products are drugs within
the meaning of section 201 (g)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(g)(B)].
Your walnut products are also new drugs under section 201(p) of the Act
[21 U.S.C. § 321(p)] because they are not generally recognized as safe
and effective for the above referenced conditions. Therefore, under
section 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 355(a)], they may not be legally
marketed with the above claims in the United States without an approved
new drug application. Additionally, your walnut products are offered for
conditions that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by
individuals who are not medical practitioners; therefore, adequate
directions for use cannot be written so that a layperson can use these
drugs safely for their intended purposes. Thus, your walnut products are
also misbranded under section 502(f)(1) of the Act, in that the
labeling for these drugs fails to bear adequate directions for use [21
U.S.C. § 352(f)(1)].
Your walnut products are also misbranded under section 403(r)(1)(B) of
the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(1)(B)] because your firm's website also
contains several additional unauthorized health claims. The following
are examples of the claims made on your firm's website:
• "Studies have also shown that omega-3s may lower the risk of stroke ..."
• "[T]here's good evidence that omega-3s can increase HDL (good
cholesterol), further reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease."
Product Label
Further, your "Diamond of California Shelled Walnut" product is
misbranded under section 403(r)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. §
343(r)(1)(B)] in that your product bears health claims that are not
authorized by the FDA. The front and back of your product label bears
the phrase "OMEGA 3 2.5 g per serving." Within the context of this
label, the heart symbols adjacent to information about the amount of
omega-3 in the product, constitute implied health claims about
consumption of omega-3 and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease [21
CFR 101. 14(a)].
The back of your product label also bears the following statement: "The
omega-3 in walnuts can help you get the proper balance of fatty acids
your body needs for promoting and maintaining heart health. In fact,
according to the Food and Drug Administration, supportive but not
conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 oz of walnuts per day, as part
of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet, and not resulting in
increased caloric intake, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Please refer to nutrition information for fat content and other details
about the nutritional profile of walnuts." Although FDA exercises
enforcement discretion over the last two sentences of this statement,
which meet the criteria for a qualified health claim for walnuts and
coronary heart disease, the last two sentences read in conjunction with
the first sentence makes the entire statement an unauthorized health
claim.
The statement suggests that the evidence supporting a relationship
between walnuts and coronary heart disease is related to the omega-3
fatty acid content of walnuts. There is not sufficient evidence to
identify a biologically active substance in walnuts that reduces the
risk of CHD. Therefore, the above statement is an unauthorized health
claim. This letter is not intended to be an inclusive review of your
products and their labeling. It is your responsibility to ensure that
all of your products comply with the Act and its implementing
regulations.
You should take prompt action to correct these violations. Failure to do
so may result in regulatory action without further notice. Such action
may include, but is not limited to, seizure or injunction.
Please respond in writing within 15 working days from your receipt of
this letter. Your response should outline the specific actions you are
taking to correct these violations and to prevent similar violations.
You should include in your response documentation such as revised labels
or other useful information that would assist us in evaluating your
corrections. If you cannot complete all corrections before you respond,
we expect that you will explain the reason for the delay and state when
you will correct any remaining violations.
Your response should be directed to Latasha Robinson, Food and Drug
Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, 5100 Paint
Branch Parkway, Office of Compliance (HFS-608), Division of
Enforcement, College Park, Maryland 20740-3835. If you have any
questions, you may contact Ms. Robinson at 301-436-1890.

According to information picked up here http://www.kotaku.com.au/...d-this-man-deserve-this/ under Japanese law it's illegal to both up & download unauthorized copyrighted material. However the poor guy they've named and shamed uploaded episodes of Karmen Rider 000 to the Internet, yet another Japanese TV series that won't see an official English release.
So how long before they start going after the people that provide the fansub raws? And how long till the MPIAA & co. buy enough politicians to spread the fun to everyone?

This is the scene from MC Wizanon's nightmare from ... thread 15? 16? Somewhere in there. As such, it constitutes a spoiler, if you haven't been reading along and care... AWIY is a Choose Your Own Adventure fic steered by reader votes on the Tohou-Project /th/ messageboard, following a 17th level 3.5e D&D wizard who appears in Gensoukyo unexpectedly. The comments and discussion are of a level of dickery these boards are thankfully free of as a general rule, but the story itself is of high quality - I like it despite not knowing a thing about the setting, and having a mild dislike for D&D for its wierd mix of nearly all-encomapssing rules if you have enough splatbooks and systemic inflexibility for things that those rules cover poorly.
Someone has set a colossal animated object on Our Hero as of the last couple of updates, in the form of a certain type of garden outbuilding... while there's no indication that his name is Eric, it's been deliberately obscured so I suppose it might well be...
Anyway, Wiz-anon has had a typically rough-and-tumble adventurreer's life, and some of that shows up in the kind of trauma that is rarely played up in actual game sessions - like the encounter relived in this scene. I did post it on the current story thread as well, but figured it could go here for anyone who doesn't care about Touhoes but has an interest in teh D&D angle. It's sketchy, because I know better than to try to ink over original pencils and still don't have a printer to spit out a light blue copy, ink over that, then re-scan and color-key the blue away as is my standard procedure for paper-to-digital art. Anyway, hopefully someone will enjoy it. I'm quite happy with how most of the poses turned out, though the goblin's legs are a little stumpy and wierd.

Or best offer, one would assume... but the buyer gets a half-dozen cottages, not just The Dude's. (Which leads me to wonder whether they'll be torn down for new condo space. The area is being gentrified, according to the article.)

Debt Crisis - Really? |

Personally, I'd call it a crisis of manufacture by the Republican party in an effort to discredit Obama. How quickly we forget the eight years that Bush Jr. was President and the mess he made out of the economy during that time.
So, let's see if I got this right. Congress stops a routine increase of the debt ceiling, saying that some changes have to be made before that happens. Right, that's a good thing. We like changes for the better in our economy. But the problem seems to be that the Republicans are not in support of getting rid of tax credits for the wealthiest of Americans and corporations. Instead, they want to cut spending on everything until it fits their wildest dreams. Not to say that Obama won't propose historically drastic cuts himself, but Boehner wants to take it even further only without upping the ante on the upper class.
So, do I have that right?
BTW: I would LOVE to know how the hell getting rid of tax credits for the wealthy hurts small business. Last I heard, a lot of small business loans are government subsidized, and Obama does not want to touch that.

In the time I've been offline, I had a bit of a 3d modeling kick. Kinda sorta. All of the following are in the neighborhood of 1200-1500 polygons plus weapons and (for the Skate) super-armor. The Raven's missiles add a ridiculous number of polys because of just how many missiles are in them; for actual use in a game they'd be a single big poly with a partially transparent texture, but these are all basic geometry with colors and in some cases a metallic effect created by messing with the specularity; there are no image maps to be found. So don't go looking for photorealism here, in fact they're kind of sparse by modern gaming standards even if textures were added. However, they are all 100% toy-able, though actually making a toy would require actually making the joints in full detail. So, let's get to the links:
First up, the AG-158 Skate. This is a very Macross-y design, and has been equppied with a Macross-y fold booster in the fighter-form heavy armor version. The armor is called HA-5 Harlequin, but but the hanger crew nickname it "Beamhell" because it mounts a gravatic lensing system and multiple laser emitters (six more like the one mounted in the wrist per arm, plus a heavy on each wing/hip) which allow it to do the "itano circus" with energy weapons instead of missile contrails. It's main role its anti-missile defense close air patrol, hence why it's not fully transformable without ejecting the fold booster - it can use them, but it's not within the primary mission envelope. The same multiple-beam targeting system can be used with the half-dozen spiritia sapping beams mounted inside the "air scoop" on the more humanish form of the (transformable) head, for riot control - energy drained rowdies quickly stop rioting, with no long term damage, even if the energy is useless for non-protodeviln. This is my justification for the two-form transforming head, though OOC it's becasue I don't want to hear any bitching about turret-style versus cone-head style. Don't like the cone-heads? You got a camera turret. Don't like inhuman turret? You got a face and optic band, and the cone-ish-ness is even reduced by the way the face sticks out of it and leaves a "scoop" behind.

Standing beside a Skate - now you see why those extra-long arms are in fact intentional?I'm rather proud of how I got them to fold out flat like that, actually. I thought it would look really lame, but it's pretty good.
![[Image: parkit.th.png]](http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/5237/parkit.th.png)
Parked - yes, the landing gear actually physically works and fits into the parts it extends from, though the "gear bays" are just a flat-black square added just over the surface of the model and a door. The doors work, too.
Okay! Next, the pure-robot-only-looks-like-it-has-a-cockpit designs, which despite that minor failing I really like a lot - and since they're explicitly intended for the Ninja Robot Space Fighter setting where only the technophobe THIS members use physical cockpits instead of energy-state merge-with-mecha system, they are in fact still originally designed as piloted craft. Now, depending on the player's option settings, one main character (that is, one that has plot attatched instead of falling under the "you can recruit ANYONE in the game if you fget their Reaction score high enough" rule) may be male or female, so I needed two designs. I'm doing the male one first, because it's simpler to explain. This is called the Rowdy Bravo, and is quite obviously based on the classic hot rod style, complete with robo-pompadour and sideburns. (And the main feature of the Bravo is its engines, which feature afterburners so leave a trail of fire and bosster-smoke behind those side-mounted engine pods...) A "Rowdy Alpha" must also exist, though I haven't created a visual design or place for it, and "Rowdy Charlie" is a police version, with a different heead, shorter engine pods, and a different "front wheel" rudder design. Lightbars on the Rowdy Charlie occupy the top hardpoints, obviously enough.

Now, for the female version, called as a model the Kyrie. First, your boss's version, the Angel of Naughty Catgirls, which is seen as a street rod if you have the male boss. (and vice versa - a dialogue if the character is in the active party when you see it the first time has a "heh, you know, I always wanted to do that, but kind of got into this business instead" flavor, but not nailed down enoguh to have been added to my Game Scripts files)

While not so explicit as the Rowdy Bravo, the hot rodding roots can be seen in the exposed and presumably modified engines. The base, civilian version is the Angel of Mercy, just seen in a couple of group shots since it's not all that striking. The first of these showcases in particular the different engine configurations between versions, which are the main variation aside from the number of robo-ahoge and cat-ears attatched to the head.

More prominent in these is the Angel of Accelleration, a sports type modified for mecha-triathlon (air-racing in the open, a robot-form obstacle course, and shooting targets in a simpler but still partly obstructed area) which also has a couple of classic "superhero flying" solo shots. Given the City of Heroes player presence in these boards, I thought I'd give 'em a try.

And then... there's Fury Angel. Did I mention superheroes? Yeah. She's a Scanner who dropped her human name post-transfer, and goes all vigilante because her loved ones got killed in a THIS operation. Pretty much a secret character in the game as planned, unless you go out of your way to look for her a chapter early the only time you'll see her is running in ahead of the party to get blown away and demonstrate the badass cred of one of the THIS bosses.
And yes, those are pink eyebrows. Why do you ask?

ETA: And that should have been on OPF, dammit, not General. Oh well, it's not really fanfiction either I suppose.
ETA2: I also wanted to mention, your boss (male or female) and Fury Angel are the only characters aside from Player McPickaname that you can keep through the whole 5000-year timeline
