  MIT Makes Battery Technology Breakthrough

"Sludge batteries" are simpler, more efficient, and use more of the battery volume for energy storage than current technologies.

  Progress
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 06-10-2011, 04:54 PM - Forum: Drunkard's Walk XIII: Glory Hound - Replies (2)

Last night, Helen and I sat down and finally parceled out Chapter 2 on a scene-by-scene basis.  We'd always known how we wanted to start it, and we knew where it ended, but between that we were essentially winging it -- until last night.  We sat down and decided exactly what every scene from first to last was going to be, whose POV would be used, and what canon material we would be showing and how (it'll take a very strong need to force us to show a sequence exactly as it appeared on the show), and we have determined exactly what words the chapter will end on.
I'll tell you a few things to whet your appetites:  The chapter picks up almost immediately after chapter 1's end point, and continues on through the fifth-season Buffy episode "Shadows".  Doug and Spike will meet.  Doug and Riley will meet.  And there will be an extended, plot-relevant flashback to Warriors' World -- with a reappearance of fan favorite Wetter Hexe in full commandant mode.  (And no, not because Helen wanted it -- 'twas my idea.  )

I Can Has ROFL Nyao? Or, The ROTFLMAO of the Catgirl
Posted by: LilFluff - 06-07-2011, 11:12 PM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (300)

Well, I don't see a new ROFL thread up to replace the locked one yet. So, since I wanted to post a ROFL I suppose it's up to me.
From Dark Titans chapter 12

Quote:Manomanoman! He'd get the next one for sure! If he didn't, he was
dead! . . . A sudden thought, almost a foreign concept by this point,
entered his mind.
. . . Oh gods . . . this was going to hurt . . .
The
scream of tearing metal, crumbling masonry and rumbling water drowned
out his own scream of pain rather nicely. The hydrant collapsed under
his charge in a manner reminiscent to most pop cans, the collision
sending him . . . now her, slamming face first into the pavement with
punishing force, as almost all of his forward momentum instantly
converted into straight down momentum.
. . . daaamn . . .
how did that Lost Moron do this all the time? Running headlong into
infrastructure hurt like hell! Unfortunately, the geyser of water scant
inches behind her was spraying her liberally with water and making it
very difficult for her to simply fall unconscious. Spraying curses
liberally herself, she sat up, wincing at every small flare of pain that
blossomed across her abused body.
Now . . . why the hell had she
done that again? In retrospect, running headfirst into a fire hydrant
seemed like an incredibly stupid thing to do . . . She giggled to
herself. Oh yeah! She was being chased by a murderous Catgirl!
-----

Will the transhumanist future have catgirls? Does Japan still exist? Well, there is your answer.

Bruce Sterling: Hit Spammers at their Payment Processors
Posted by: Logan Darklighter - 06-07-2011, 08:35 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

Via Instapundit:

Quote:BRUCE STERLING: Hit Spammers At Their Payment Processors. “Nearly all financial transactions arising from spam operations are handled by just three banks, according to a paper from 15 researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at San Diego, the International Computer Science Institute and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The three banks are Azerigazbank in Azerbaijan, DnB NOR in Latvia, and St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank in the Caribbean. As potential solutions, the researchers recommend that issuing banks in the US refuse to conduct ‘card not present’ transactions for known spammers.”

[Editor's Note (Schultz): This is one of the most interesting information security research efforts in recent years.
(Honan): This is a very interesting development in the fight against spam. While changing hosting providers is a trivial matter for spam operators changing their payment processor is not easy making it more time consuming and costly for spammers to conduct their operations. * Should enough of these payment processors be identified and blacklisted it could have a major impact in the amount of spam flooding our networks.]

* Emphasis Mine.

She has apparantly been taken by some security people. She's the friend of an internet friend and is probably in deep trouble. I believe she has dual US citizenship, but I don't, so don't really know how much help she can expect.

  Passing of Grandmother
Posted by: Mark Skarr - 06-06-2011, 11:55 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (8)

On a serious note, my 101 year-old grandmother passed away this morning.
She had suffered from several strokes and had been deteriorating since her 99th birthday.  So, her passing is neither unexpected nor a tradgey.  She's at peace and that's what's important.  I may or may not be around for the next few days, but I will try to show up, if just to be silly since humor and laughter are two of the most important things in life as far as I'm concerned.
