Have we asked (and answered) this question yet?
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 03-19-2010, 02:15 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (2)

The latest post to the SMOF panel thread, the one with Yuki, made me think of this, I can't remember if we've ever discussed it, and several searches of the Fenwiki result in no answer.
Is handwavium unique to Earth, or are there other civilizations out there using it?

  Chicago Gun Ban Case
Posted by: Logan Darklighter - 03-18-2010, 10:33 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (54)

A friend of mine posted the following:

Quote:..On the Chicago Gun ban
case before the Supreme Court

I have been asked to give my opinion on the up coming case in front of
the Supreme Court on the Chicago gun ban. Read this and understand where
I come from...
I am a believer in the right of all people to
defend themselves..I am ardently pro gun...
but....in this
case...the City of Chicago is right
...sorry folks..and the Kelo
decision does not apply.
WHAT....WHY you ask...
Simple: 2 things

1: Kelo dealt with Washington D.C. which is a Federal entity! The 2nd
amendment applies the the Federal government only.
2: The State of
Illinois is one of a handful of states that does NOT have in its state
constitution a '2nd amendment' provision. So..the City of Chicago can
ban handguns..it does not violate 'the rights of the people of
Illinois' because the people of Illinois according to their
constitution do not have that right.
..but Mike ..but Mike..what
about the the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments?
13th freed the slaves

14th defined what a citizen is.
15th says you can not deny suffrage
to the former slaves.
The Federal Government was created by the
States, NOT the other way around.
I OPPOSE using the 'Incorporation
Doctrine' to force the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois to
allow handguns...
just as much as I oppose it being used to force me
to give up mine in Texas.
We live in a federal system..we have
different laws in different states...(and I think that is a good
thing..if you don't fine we disagree)..and different takes on
things...official bullies be damned!
My response:
Quote:That's a well thought out argument there. A very
good catch by you on the difference between federal and state law. If
I'm for states rights (and I am) then it would be hypocritical of me to
want the Fed to mandate that Chicago give up its gun law. The federal
government should make no law abridging the right of the people to bear
arms. But that doesn't stop a state or local municipal government from
regulating it.
Just means as a citizen it's your duty not to
just pay attention every 4 years, but ALL the time and watch your local
and state legislators as well as Washington. If you want to make sure
it's impossible for a state to ban guns, get THEIR Supreme Court to make
a ruling on it, not the SCOTUS.

[story][open][in progress] The SMOF panel at Serenity-con
Posted by: robkelk - 03-18-2010, 02:22 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (15)

From posts made by Mal, BA, me, Foxboy, Cobalt, and Ebony to the http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/topic/6569]Even More Inspirational and Meta Sites thread. Work-in-progress, feel free to add to this in-character. Story title subject to change once somebody comes up with a better title.

Extraced from the Hansard of the discussion at the panel "Secret Masters of Fenspace Tell All" during the 2014 Convention.

(S. Malaclypse Fnord, Soviet Air Force-In-Exile)
I have a question for those of you who have built robotic shells for your AIs. How did you go about picking out your companion's genitals for him or her? Did you go by species and ethnicity averages for the dimensions, or try to give them an ideal, hoping that it will help them to become popular and successful in life? Or did you give them something very basic in the expectation that when they're older and have developed more of a sense of who and what they want to be, they could make their own modifications if they want to?

(Noah Scott, Stellvia)
Er... Ah... Um... Huh?

(Gina Langley, Roughriders)
Living proof, here!

(N. Scott)
All right, I may as well set the record straight.

(Yayoi Fujisawa, Crystal Millennium, Stellvia)
Is this mic on? Oh, good. So, how did you choose?

(N. Scott)
I didn't. You're based on one of Ryou Azuki's characters, remember?

(Y. Fujisawa)
How could I forget? Ah, you're saying Azuki-san chose.

(N. Scott)
Right. Probably subconsciously.

(Y. Fujisawa)
But if you created an android who wasn't based on someone else's character, how would you choose?

(N. Scott)
That's a completely hypothetical "if," and I see no reason to answer it.

(Y. Fujisawa)
Oh. Are you afraid to answer?

(N. Scott)
No, I'm just no good at sculpting. Remember, it was A.C. who made your body along with Kohran, Yoriko, and Natsuko's. And Agatha's, too.

(Y. Fujisawa)
And Sora's body.

(N. Scott)
Sora's original body, yes. And Vulpine Fury made the other angels' bodies. But it was the wondergoop that made you look completely human.

(Y. Fujisawa)
Are you blaming my anatomy on the handwavium? (pause) You are blaming it on the handwavium!

(Vulpine Fury, unaffiliated)
They just happen, okay? Except for that one time... and poor Karen, according to the "mother-in-law."

(Lime Sorrel, unaffiliated)
What are we talking about, Dad?

(V. Fury)
I'll tell you later.

(A.C. Peters, Justice League Interplanetary)
Oh for Belldandy's sake. Right, whatever.

(Lebia Maverick, Justice League Interplanetary, Hacker Underspace)
Do go on, this is interesting.

(A.C. Peters)
You were the one who designed your body, I just built it.

(Adonis McMurdo, Justice League Interplanetary)
And well built it is too.

(L. Maverick)
Likewise.

(A.C. Peters)
If you're going to flirt, do it elsewhere.

(Kasumi, Justice League Interplanetary)
Oh my, don't be like that.

(Greenpeace Crolis, Justice League Interplanetary)
Yeah. C'mon A.C., pleease?

(A.C. Peters)
Fine. Yayoi, Noah did ask I make you girls as realistic as possible. Which was tricky, given what I had to work with. So... Anatomy books. Lots and lots of them. And that was just to get the basic reproductive system analogue sorted. After that, it was all down to the 'wave. Unlike a certain blonde.

(S. Fnord)
Another victory for the Discordian faction of the Soviet Central Committee!

(Benjamin Rhodes, Roughriders)
Yeah, yeah. All the same, this shit's hilarious.

(Blackstone, Banzai Institute for Biomedical Research and Strategic Information)
Don't look at me. Nobody tells me anything.

(Nezumi, Banzai Institute for Biomedical Research and Strategic Information)
That's because when they do, you cover your ears, and chant, "La la la. I'm not listening! La la la. I'm in my happy place!"

(Blackstone)
So? Doesn't everyone do that?

(Nezumi)
No, Blackstone. Only you.

(Blackstone)
Oh, good. I'd hate to be a conformist.

(Buckaroo, Banzai Institute for Biomedical Research and Strategic Information)
Wrenching the topic back onto track ... I'd have to say that the variables surrounding AI avatar choices are drawn from a wide selection, based on a number of choices made by each AI's "parents" and a collection of environmental influences. These choices affect gender, behavior, and final manifestation, either as a cyberspace spirit or in a physical form, in such fashions as to be as intimately personal and individual as a quest for enlightenment. I could tell you what brought about my own manifestation, but to you it would seem hardly significant. It is only important through my own perspective on the world.

(Chaos, Banzai Institute for Biomedical Research and Strategic Information)
Wait ... what?

(Buckaroo)
AI appearance depends on the AI.

(Chaos)
Oh. Why are we talking about this again?

(B. Rhodes)
Sweet Lady Skuld, preserve us.

(G. Langley)
CHAOS! SHUT UP AND PAY ATTENTION!

They must be handing out ice-skates in Hell, because the original Dirty Pair TV series has finally been licensed after all these decades.

(No, not "Flash", or the movies. or the OAVs - those have been available for nearly forever. This is the original TV series.

Licensed by Right Stuf, so it's a sub-only release... but we're used to that from watching our grainy nth-generation VHS fansubs, right?

The Crey Summer Catalog: MACH Mk. II Medi-Build
Posted by: OpMegs - 03-17-2010, 03:05 PM - Forum: Build Advice - Replies (3)

So with MACH crawling into the 30s, I figure he's getting close to the point wherein his presence on higher level TFs will catapult him to 50. Ergo, I started work on what I expect he'll look like once he gets there.
If the big white and red paintjob didn't tell you, MACH is primarily a MedicBot. He heals stuff, he heals it fast, he heals it good, and whatever combat capability he has is jammed in after that. Hence his current build has some attack powers, but they're almost all set bonus mules and used for the secondary effects. In particular, abusing the Chance Of Hold Devastation proc.
Beyond that, he's intended as a support position, hence the full stealth and teleporter. I doubt he'll be as good of a Blastfender as Rhea, but I suspect he'll hold his own in the green numbers.

Strangeness - display stops updating, just on these forums?
Posted by: The Wanderer - 03-16-2010, 04:34 PM - Forum: Forums - Replies (12)

I've been having a strange issue lately (last week or two?), which only seems to manifest on these forums.

Every now and then, when a new page loads, part of the screen will continue to display whatever was present on that portion of the previously displayed page.

Also, every now and then, when a new page loads, the *entire* screen will continue to display the previous page, and clicking anywhere on the page does nothing. I can switch tabs, and other sites work fine; however, if I switch back to the tab with the problem, it will then display what had been showing on the other tab. Similarly, I can switch desktops and use other programs, and when I switch back, the page displays whatever was on the other desktop.

The only thing that seems to "clear" this is to use the browser Back button to return to the previous page, then click the link to go forward again. (This is something of an issue when attempting to make a new post; fortunately I'm already in the habit of copying unsubmitted post text before submitting it, because of other problems in the past.)

As I said, this doesn't seem to happen anywhere other than on these forums, or I'd suspect a software problem on my end before anything else. Has anyone else seen anything similar to this?
