  [GURPS Fenspace] Shipbuilding
Posted by: Cobalt Greywalker - 02-16-2010, 12:53 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (13)

OK, I'm finally getting off my behind and posting this. I've included notes on why I've gone for certain things (See the {n} tags). Comments or suggestions from anyone?

GURPS White Stallion

SM+8 (125 feet), Stealth 2M, Dynamic Chameleon 1.5M, Artificial Gravity 1M, Gravitic Compensators 1M
Streamlined Hull

Base Hull
dDR/HP = 70 + 15 = 85 (Default Nano-composite Armour){1}
Hnd/SR = -1/5
TL=10^ {2}

Front Section
[1] Hardened Nano-composite Armour (+15dDR/HP) 10M
[2] Multipurpose Array, Multiscanner, FTL, TL12 (Level 11) {3} 20M
[3!] Cloaking Device 30M
[4] Habitat (6*3person Bunkrooms) 6M
[5] Habitat (1 Science! Lab, 2 Mini-Robofac, 2 Automed Sickbays) 1M +30M +1M +200K
[6] Habitat (1 Luxury Cabin, 2 Cabins, 1 Office, 1 Steerage (5 Tons)) 1M
[core] Control Room (C9, Comm/Sensor 7 (FTL), Stations 2) 1.9M

Centre Section
[1] Hardened Nano-composite Armour (+15dDR/HP) 10M
[2] Defensive ECM 10M
[3!] Medium Battery, 1 Fixed, 2 Turreted (Very Rapid Fire), Electromagnetic. 6M
[4!] Medium Battery, 3 Missile Launchers (1 rear). 6M
[5] Habitat (1 Establishment (Galley), 2 Briefing Rooms) 1M
[6] Habitat (6 Cabins) 6M

Rear Section
[1] Hardened Nano-composite Armour (+15dDR/HP) 10M
[2] Cargo hold (50 Tons)
[2-3] 2 Hanger Bays (30 Tons each) 200K
[4-5!] 2 Stardrives (Subwarp, 1000G; FTL, 500c/0.42 parsec a day; STL, 0.08c/4.8 ls/min) {4} 20M
[6] Total Conversion Reactor (5 Power Points) 60M
[core] Engine Room 300K

Total Cost: 5.5M + 101.1M + 39M + 90.5M = 236.1M

Notes:
{1}: I figured, given that Handwavium integrates itself with the materials it works on, we can add the equivalent of one US Nano-Composite armour section to the entire hull dDR/HP rating.
{2}: I’m making assumptions here, but the general level of Space tech in Fenspace is better than TL8.
{3}: Again, I’m assuming FTL sensors are easier than FTL comms, but the Stallion is big enough to fit an Interwave set as well.
{4}: In trying to match the drives to existing information, I made the following determinations:
a) In normal(-ish) circumstances, the same drive does both STL and FTL. Thus, I used the Subwarp design switch on the Stardrives.
b) Also, unless the object is very large (say a mile or greater) it is reasonably easy to get the full FTL speed of 500c.
c) For the speeds we are using, the Warp drive option on p. 41 of Starships to allow stardrives to have some warp capability in system has been used. Hence the STL rating.
Thus, it is possible to ‘jump’ to full STL speed, but the ‘upshift’ requires a mode shift. I would suggest it also requires the vessel to be in a low g field. If this wasn’t possible, the various ships (at 500g) would take between 12 mins to get to 0.01c, an hour to get to 0.05C, 2 hours to 0.1c… And the same to decelerate at the end.

So I'm over at my buddy Glenn's house because he's recorded the first 4 episodes of Top Gear's season 13 from BBC America.
And in commercial preview of the next segment of Episode 2, they show that it's going to be Steven Fry as the Star In a Reasonably Priced Car. So I said, "Oh good, a celebrity I've actually HEARD of on Top Gear."
"Who is he?" Asks Glenn.
"You don't know?"
Negatory shake of the head.
"Oh - well remember 'V for Vendetta'? He was the television host 'in the closet' that Edie takes refuge with."
"Ah - " Says Glenn, "I remember now. You know they're going to be doing a new series based on the original?"
"GwabaWHA..?"
"Yeah. ABC is doing it."
"Wait... WHAT?"
(I still haven't figured out that he's on about something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than what I was - you hear that sound of gears crunching and grinding? That's the sound of a paradigm trying to shift without a clutch. Smoke is coming out of my ears.)
"Wait, wait, WAIT. THAT story had a definite beginning, middle and END. No room to add to it. HOW...
(I finally catch up)
"Wait. Back up. Start over. Now I was talking about the MOVIE we saw a couple of years ago. 'Remember, remember the 5th of November...? That one?"
Glenn says, "Oh.. OH YEAH. Okay no. Right, Sorry. I didn't understand what you said."
Me: "Right - the MOVIE, with V as the revolutionary? In the mask? Well Steven Fry..."
Glenn: "Oh RIGHT, now I remember him. No you're right. I was talking about the remake of of V..."
Me: "With the Alien Invasion..."
Glenn: "Right. Okay, so let me un-pause and we'll continue..."
Me: "NO. WAIT. STOP. Oh my god... It would WORK! I can SEE it! V as the inspiration of the resistance against the aliens! It's almost the same story, you even have the same SIGNS spray painted everywhere!"
Now Glenn's in on it: "Holy shit, you're right! And the bit with Stephen Fry's talk show making fun of the Prime Minister, it's not the Prime Minister, it's the leader of the Aliens!"
Me: "I've GOT to write this down and POST it before the idea gets lost!"
And, well - here I am. ^_^

My net connection started getting kind of wonky late last night, cutting in and out unpredictably.  It seems to be okay so far this morning, but if I disappear from the Net for any length of time in the next few days, that's probably why.

Good, Bad, and Depends-On-Circumstance - The Second
Posted by: David Lewis - 02-14-2010, 03:56 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (6)

Good

First off, a
characteristic fantasy metal piece by Blind Guardian, the band that had Lord of
the Rings ballads before Peter Jackson founded Weta, this is the theme song
from the videogame Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

Sacred – Blind Guardian – 6:18

[Intro]

Hello, my loyal servants.

Listen, this is for the people of Ancaria.

Though the hour's dark and the suffering goes on,

just keep in mind:

This world, is sacred.

[Song]

The realms bleeding

It suffers

Old and weak

No further argued

There is war at hand

(The system's failed)

The engine's running

Then after all I sense the end is starting

These lunatics deny the truth

I know I will not fail

There'll be,

War it's now or never

We shall stand together

One by one

This world is sacred

(I'm coming home)

War it's now or never

We shall stand together

One by one

This world is sacred

I'm coming home

Coming home!

You chase the twilight and you know

You will be on your own

On your own!

The misery's shown

I'll be alone in this hour

I face the unknown

Witness the end

I'm bleeding

I'm fading

Here in my final hour

When long-lost memories return

And a voice keeps calling

All dead and gone

Its out of hand

Life is in motion

(I'm wishing, I'm fading)

Time to wake up

Face the truth

I'm sinking I'm drowning

There's no doub and no regret

(Time to reveal now)

This is no illusion

It is real

Carry on the flame

It's not over now

Watch me I will rise!

(Time to reveal now)

I know I will not fail anymore

Bind the one forever

All that really matters

Blessed ground

This world is sacred

(I'm coming home)

War it's now or never

We shall stand together

One by one

This world is sacred

I'm coming home

Yesterdays gone

There's no today no tomorrow

I'd risk all the land

The ritual failed

There at the gates

I'm left alone in this hour

Driven insane

I am left alone

And now I drown in deepest shadows

While the golden horn is sealed

I'm wishing

I'm fading

And I am part of the machine

No one lives forever

All that really matters

Find the one

This world is sacred

(I'm coming home)

War it's now or never

We shall stand together

One by one

This world is sacred

I'm coming home

(HOOOOOOOOOOME!)

Power: Doug would probably try for a gate song (I'm coming
home), but I see this turning the AOE into holy ground, with all the
metaphysical bonuses that implies, like a MASSIVE bonus fighting demons and
vampires.

Bad

I Don't Want To Be (A Superhero) – Roadrunner United –
2:03

They came from the sky

And they came from the sea

They came from the inside of the television screen

Babies of bastards

Breeding as one

The fate of Earth is doomed

I quit! I'm done!

Some kind of darkness come creep over me

On what legal meat does our Caesar do feed?

So we could never be this free! No!

I don't want to be a superhero

Never really cared about society

I don't want to be a superhero

I don't care so don't call me

They came from the sea

And they came from the sky

Captain America is going to die

Babies of bastards

Breeding for fun

The fate of Earth is doomed

Get your gun, I'm done

Some kind of darkness come creep over me

On what legal meat does our Caesar do feed?

So we could never be this free! No!

I don't want to be a superhero

Never really cared about society

I don't want to be a superhero

I don't care so don't call me

Woah, Woah, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey

Some kind of darkness come creep over me

On what legal meat does our Caesar do feed?

So we could never be this free! No!

I don't want to be a superhero

Never really cared about society

I don't want to be a superhero

I don't care so don't call me

I don't want to be a superhero

Woah

I don't want to be a superhero

Woah

– (Supernatural AMV with song)

Power: A ‘make me a completely powerless human' song, whilst
theoretically useful in certain circumstances, has two downsides. 1) It's very
short length makes it relatively useless, and 2) I see this working on any/all
Superheroes surrounding Doug at the time as well, making it a very bad one to
try out in the middle of a firefight. Plus there's the looming apocalypse and
giving up theme throughout, and the possibility that the power-drain could have
potentially have no time-limit.

Depends

Zombie – Cranberries – 5:14

Another head hangs lowly,

Child is slowly taken.

And the violence caused such silence,

Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.

In your head, in your head they are fighting,

With their tanks and their bombs,

And their bombs and their guns.

In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,

Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,

In your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie?

Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...

Another mother's breaking,

Heart is taking over.

When the violence causes silence,

We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.

In your head, in your head they're still fighting,

With their tanks and their bombs,

And their bombs and their guns.

In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,

Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,

In your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie?

Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,

Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ejga4kJ ... re=related

Power: I could see this going two ways, either a ‘drive a
person mad with war and screaming in thier heads' ability, or a more benign mind-control
telepathy power, with the downside of rendering the person into a zombie-like
state during use.

There's a new anime company in town

Well, okay - it's an existing entertainment company that's getting into anime translation and distribution. NIS America http://nisamerica.com/nart/press/Anime% ... 100212.pdf]just announced that they hold the licenses for four anime... and they picked some strong titles to launch their anime line: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toradora]!]Toradora!, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persona:_Trinity_Soul]PERSONA -trinity soul-, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_Hearts]Pandora Hearts, and Our Home’s Fox Deity (better known as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Home%27s_Fox_Deity].]Wagaya no Oinari-sama).

To make this a bit more entertaining than the usual announcement posting, I thought I'd add a poll to it. I'm wondering...

  Teen Titans fic recs

So I've been burning through Teen Titans on netflix recently, and now I'm jonesing for a good TT fic.
I'll give anything a shot. But as I've just finished season 4, anything Raven centric would be especially appreciated.
Post season-5 fics will be read later this week, once I've had a chance to finish the series.

I've already read:
Deadpan Love
What Evil Lurks
Dark Titans

Thanks in advance.
