  The Song of the Dragon Masters
Posted by: DHBirr - 10-11-2009, 02:56 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - No Replies

In a weird way, I guess this counts as fan fiction: Michael Moorcock put four lines of song into one of the Elric of
Melnibone stories, and I expanded on that, doing my poor best to capture the Melnibonean spirit. (I wrote this something like twenty
or twenty-five years ago.)

Fiery forms in
the blue sky circle,

Mortals below us tremble aghast--

You and we were first to conquer,

You and we shall
be the last!

Out from our island we ride, at the break of the day;

Out to a world
unsuspecting, to conquer and slay,

And to bring all
the lesser creation under our sway,

On this the
Chaos Morn.

Dragons a-wing
to the music of humankind's screams;

Laughing we ride
to the smashing of humankind's dreams;

In Arioch's
name, the dragons' bright flame-venom streams:

Below us humans
burn.

Wild wind-horses
soar the cloud-trails,

Unholy horn doth sound its blast--

You and we were first to conquer,

You and we shall
be the last!

Unto our race strength was given to do as we will;

With it ambition
and pride, without outlet until

The gods gave us
humans to torture, enslave, and to kill:

Thus we found
joy in life!

Then dragons and
riders winged over all of the earth,

As in fire and
chaos our Bright Empire had its dark birth,

And the
deathcries of humans did service to fuel our mirth:

Thus we found
joy in strife!

Humans dread to
face the future;

Little care we 'til the future is past--

You and we were first to conquer,

You and we shall
be the last!

Onward, then, dragons, as cities we've plundered burn bright;

We've looted
throughout the day -- we shall dance through the night;

And, dying, our
victims shriek melodies for our delight,

In painful
symphony.

Who recks what
the future may hold for us, children of pride?

Though much may
be taken from us, much yet will abide:

And above all,
that we, only we, on dragons may ride.

So shall it ever
be.

So then,
whatever tomorrow may send,

Our choices are made and the dice are cast--

You and we were first to conquer,

You and we shall
be the last!

  [Meta] Concept: Fenspace Alternates
Posted by: robkelk - 10-10-2009, 01:29 AM - Forum: Fenspace - No Replies

Over the last few days, I've come up with what my illness-addled mind thinks is a wonderful idea for a story arc. But I'm in sufficient command of my faculties to realize my mind is illness-addled, so I've emailed the concept to Mal for sanity-checking. If Mal replies with anything along the lines of "just what kind of anti-cold medication are you on, Rob?", then I'll know it wasn't such a good idea after all and post it as an alternate-universe plotbunny instead of proposing it as a shared arc.

But that got me to thinking - should we have a "Fenspace Alternates" section in the FenWiki for the stories that, while well-written, just don't fit into the canonical Fenspace? (The Kemwer stories come to mind here as examples.) Or would that be opening up a can of worms that at this point should be left closed?

  Any Sony Reader Touch/Pocket users here?
Posted by: LilFluff - 10-09-2009, 07:22 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (7)

(AARG! Accidentally did a page-back, and however Yuku works it isn't one of the sites where Firefox will still have your text if you accidentally leave the
page and come straight back.)

Does anyone here have and use the Sony Reader Touch or Pocket? I have a chance to get one of those for almost $100 off at (so-called) Best Buy, but nearly all
the reviews I'm finding are from people who only used them for a few days or maybe a week before writing the reviews (or are for older models). I'm
open to being convinced that I should go for a different ebook reader, but keep in mind even for the touch I'd only be paying roughly $200 + tax (that
would blow more than one paycheck's entertainment budget, but it should last alot longer than one pay period), so I'd need to be convinced that the
price difference would be worth it.

I like that the Touch has a bigger screen in nearly the same size unit, on the other hand I do not like that neither has support for external memory (come on,
SD cards are cheap, let me stuff Project Gutenburg on one, okay Sony? (CORRECTION: No SD on Pocket, but the Touch does have an SD slot)) but at least the
internal memory is half a gig, room for a metric boatload of books. I also like that the Touch and Pocket support ePub files (the current iteration of the Open
Ebook Format), which for those who haven't investigated ebook file formats is little more than one or more html files zipped up with the file extension
changed from .zip to .epub, so easy roll-your-own ebook support too. On the other hand the Pocket would drop to just over $100, for which I could see viewing
it as a temporary one-or-two year holdover until hopefully much better models are available (heck, even after tax, even at one year that would be only around
ten bucks a month and could still serve as a spare/backup device even if I bought something else).

  Feeling a little Lost In (Fen)Space
Posted by: Shinkaze - 10-09-2009, 04:52 PM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (9)

I don't have a lot of time, but I wanted to do this before I leave, so here I go. I've finally redone all the stuff I lost last time and I should
actually have time to devote to this for a while, but I'm feeling a little lost. I haven't been keeping up with this forum as much as I'd like
and, while I've read most of the threads I missed, it seems like there's some information that's not here or on the wiki. For example, from the
conversations I see around here, it seems like the events both during the boskone war and afterword have been planned out significantly, but I can't find
anything about it, could someone fill me in? It also seems like the extent of what can be done with handwavium has been greatly increased, could someone
maybe provide me with some general guidelines?. Is there even still room for characters that could be significant within the setting? Sorry to be asking so
many questions, but I'm finally near a point where I might be able to start writing soon, so I needed to ask.

Also, Bob, is the offer to let me use the ship from this snippet still there? because I think it would work
with what(little) I've got planned.

  Machinae Supremacy - an oncoming freight train of awesome
Posted by: classicdrogn - 10-08-2009, 05:18 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (2)

I'm fairly sure http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/webography.php is their downloads page, with
Anthem Apocalyptica and Multiball being particularly good (both instrumentals, but I haven't decyphered enough lyrics to make specific Game suggestions)
It's guitar-heavy metal with added bloopy synth, and the ones with lyrics are usually ballad form rather than repeating a few lines over and over.

The official soundtrack band if I ever publish a videogame, for 100% sure.

Grab the three Sidology tracks too.
