I wasn't even looking for it. I had long ago given up on Hearts of Ice, figuring that it would remain the ultimate example of a dead and abandoned fic.
I'd taken Krista Perry's site out of my personal bookmarks and stopped checking on it about... mmm 7-8 years ago.
I was perusing TV Tropes and was following up something that lead me to the Dead Fics page - where there was an update that Hearts of Ice was done. Completed.
*THUD*
That was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor. I'm thinking - this has got to be a cruel joke. No way. They're yanking my chain.
Googled up the old site, and wow, it's still there! First thing I see is Krista's announcement that it was done.
I've now finished reading it.
Holy Crap.
HOLY CRAP.
I... just FINISHED... READING... HEARTS OF ICE.
I thought those words would NEVER be written out into a sentence!
Now I have to find the time and go back and read the whole thing again. Cause my memory of the story is pretty sketchy after all this time.
I will say this - the finale of the story -- I'm not sure it was worth waiting a DECADE for...
But it's DAMN good!! Fantastic even!
Still wandering about kinda stunned. It's kinda like... certain things you think are always going to be a constant. The Cold War... the Berlin Wall... the
Red Sox never winning the World Series... Hearts of Ice never getting finished...
Anybody check the thermostat in hell these days? I think Satan is feeling a mite drafty about now...

Riot Force Reports:
Purrfect Kick
The Chase
Normally I love running.
Whether it's chasing crooks or a nice furry tail, running has never been problem since I changed. Chasing my glimmering hope of freedom is an entirely different feeling.
Not fun at all.
But I keep running, cause I can't win a fight with these people, and peaceful negations were never really an option.
I sprint down the hallway, claws adding to the gouges in the wood floors. All thoughts of stealth discarded, stealth is only useful if they don't know I'm here. And make no mistake about it, they already know I'm here. The only thing I have going for me is that I'm closer to the window than they are to me.
Through the window I can see nice clear night sky. I'm looking out the south side of the building, so I need to get 37 feet past that window before I'm clear of the property, and clear of any charges they can make stick.
That little feeling of hope dies a messy death when I see the impervium grate drop in place.
"Hairballs!" I curse to myself as I turn into the stairwell and head up, they must really have their panties in a twist if they are activating the external defenses. I bail out of the stairway on the 5th floor. There's a good chance one of the grates on the west side didn't come down. I know cause I had to deactivate it when I snuck in here last week.
Unfortunately I'm not quite alone when I exit the stairs. Halfway down the hallway a figure turns at the sound of the door crashing open. Angry scowl? Check. Black clothes? Check. Taser? Check.
Normally a plain human with a taser wouldn't be a problem for me, but I don't have my shield with me. And adding Assault & Battery on top of Trespassing wouldn't be a smart move. So if defending and counter-attacking are not options I'm left with more strategic retreats.
I haul my furry behind down the hallways and try to lose my pursuer in with a few quick turns. The shouts of 'stop!' start to get a little fainter when my momentum is abruptly altered. Getting clotheslined while looking over my shoulder is not my best moment. The arm around my neck doesn't even let me hit the ground before I'm being dragged inside a room that wasn't open a second ago.
The lack of being immediately tasered makes me pause enough to feel, and more importantly smell, the assailant at my back.
"Hey Julie!" I wheeze through my abused windpipe. "Your not still mad a-" I shut up as she gives me a warning bite on the back of my neck. I stay still and glance around the small dorm room.
Standing on a bed across from us is Julie's roommate Kiki, one ear to the wall and a look of concentration on her face. Kiki is a 15 year old egyptian minx and has yet to desire my services. Given the things she already did to her oversized 'bow mortals' t-shirt, I was looking forward to her first heat. After a few tense moments she relaxes and says "Mother Abigail is heading upstairs."
I feel Julie relax against my back a bit. I'm pleasantly reminded that she's snow leopard, and likes to wear as little as possible. But before I can comment on her lack of attire I get another nip on the back of my neck. I take the hint and keep quite.
"Good. See Kiki, males can be taught" Julie said over my shoulder. Kiki just sighed and went back to sharpening her claws.
"Now, I'm not going to hold your dalliances against you. Lord knows Susan is going to be much more pleasant to be around." She snorts a small laugh and continues "Her roommate is probably just as happy as she is right now."
I wisely don't say anything. Staying around to take advantage of Beth's appreciation was the reason I was caught in the first place.
"But we are going to have to live through a lockdown thanks to your lack of stealth. So your going to pay me back." Julie says as her free hand wanders down my front.
Happy thoughts die a quiet little death as a claws find my growing enthusiasm. I freeze, not even moving my head as I hear Kiki laugh quietly at my situation.
"Not now you tom." Julie says without an real heat in her voice "I have next weekend off to 'visit my parents'. And you are going to be mine from friday night to monday morning, I expect to treated as a lady should."
Well crap. This was going to put a dent my bank account. But given that she still had her claws on my tender bits I didn't complain. "Anything for you Julie."
She uncoiled herself from me and walked over to the window, lifting up the impervium grate with no more effort than I would have opening the window. "Now skedaddle fuzzbutt. Next time you get caught I might not be feeling so generous."
I gave her a toothy smile and made my exit. Only pausing to look back once I was clear of the property. As much as I hated it, there were too many things to love in St. Baptiste's school for Catgirls to ever wish any real harm on the place.

I'd put this in ROFL but I don't think it counts if I thought of it myself. Anyway...

Do we need a VIIOR wiki?

Just what the topic says. I was trying to remember something about VIIOR earlier this evening, and realized that -- at least as far as I was concerned -- the
thread has reached an information density where I was starting to lose track of who/what/where/when. Would a wiki to organize status and details be useful?

The Song of the Dragon Masters

In a weird way, I guess this counts as fan fiction: Michael Moorcock put four lines of song into one of the Elric of
Melnibone stories, and I expanded on that, doing my poor best to capture the Melnibonean spirit. (I wrote this something like twenty
or twenty-five years ago.)
Fiery forms in
the blue sky circle,
Mortals below us tremble aghast--
You and we were first to conquer,
You and we shall
be the last!
Out from our island we ride, at the break of the day;
Out to a world
unsuspecting, to conquer and slay,
And to bring all
the lesser creation under our sway,
On this the
Chaos Morn.
Dragons a-wing
to the music of humankind's screams;
Laughing we ride
to the smashing of humankind's dreams;
In Arioch's
name, the dragons' bright flame-venom streams:
Below us humans
burn.
Wild wind-horses
soar the cloud-trails,
Unholy horn doth sound its blast--
You and we were first to conquer,
You and we shall
be the last!
Unto our race strength was given to do as we will;
With it ambition
and pride, without outlet until
The gods gave us
humans to torture, enslave, and to kill:
Thus we found
joy in life!
Then dragons and
riders winged over all of the earth,
As in fire and
chaos our Bright Empire had its dark birth,
And the
deathcries of humans did service to fuel our mirth:
Thus we found
joy in strife!
Humans dread to
face the future;
Little care we 'til the future is past--
You and we were first to conquer,
You and we shall
be the last!
Onward, then, dragons, as cities we've plundered burn bright;
We've looted
throughout the day -- we shall dance through the night;
And, dying, our
victims shriek melodies for our delight,
In painful
symphony.
Who recks what
the future may hold for us, children of pride?
Though much may
be taken from us, much yet will abide:
And above all,
that we, only we, on dragons may ride.
So shall it ever
be.
So then,
whatever tomorrow may send,
Our choices are made and the dice are cast--
You and we were first to conquer,
You and we shall
be the last!

[Meta] Concept: Fenspace Alternates

Over the last few days, I've come up with what my illness-addled mind thinks is a wonderful idea for a story arc. But I'm in sufficient command of my faculties to realize my mind is illness-addled, so I've emailed the concept to Mal for sanity-checking. If Mal replies with anything along the lines of "just what kind of anti-cold medication are you on, Rob?", then I'll know it wasn't such a good idea after all and post it as an alternate-universe plotbunny instead of proposing it as a shared arc.
But that got me to thinking - should we have a "Fenspace Alternates" section in the FenWiki for the stories that, while well-written, just don't fit into the canonical Fenspace? (The Kemwer stories come to mind here as examples.) Or would that be opening up a can of worms that at this point should be left closed?
