  Things Are Tough All Over

Speaking of coups d'état....

It must feel like old times for Aung San Suu Kyi, and not in any good way, being locked up by Myanmar's military "government" again.

And it was about alleged voter fraud.  The Dotard is looking on in envy.

  [OOC] "The hero's path"
Posted by: robkelk - 01-29-2021, 09:26 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (5)

One might recall that my SI was geased to "continue to walk the hero's path, else when he dies his soul will be taken by [Garm's] mistress", in Donaldson en Kazakiri.

But just what is the hero's path?

I'm curious as to how others would answer that question, so that I can get a better handle on how my SI should be behaving. Starting off the discussion, let's hear from some fictional characters who might end up becoming displacees:

Quote:If one truly is to have the right to be called a Hero, it's not because he wields a sword or because he holds a shield. Not because he heals, either. A Hero is one who risks his own life, to protect his companions, to save the woman, he wagers himself. It doesn't matter if you're beaten. It's fine if you're crushed. Weep all you want. Because the victor is always found among the losers. Drive your wish through. Cry out your desire. Do that, and that is when a Hero looks most impressive!
- Hermes, Bell Cranel's grandfather, and Bell Cranel, speaking in turns, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, season 1, episode 13

That seems like a pretty good starting point to me. But is there anything else?

Marjorie Taylor Greene just keeps piling on the crazy
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 01-29-2021, 02:47 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (17)

According to Georgia Republican Greene, the 2018 California wildfires were started by a secret space laser operated by Jewish financiers. (Article includes other items in her heap of crazy.)

She's also apparently been threatening Democratic Representative Cori Bush in the halls of Congress, to the point that Bush has had her office moved away from Greene's out of concern for her and her staff's safety.

At least one major Republican operative is openly calling Greene "insane".

According to a book written by a former KGB operative, Trump was groomed for nigh on forty years as a KGB asset. The article is an interesting read.

  Live Action "Sandman" Cast Announced
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 01-28-2021, 04:02 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

Netflix is going to be doing a live-action version of DC's Sandman, and they've just formally announced what look like almost all the primary cast members.  Interestingly, Death isn't among them, which begs the question, is she in the show at all, or are they still looking?  The article is annoyingly uninformative on that front.

Wall Street doesn’t like it when their own tools are turned against them
Posted by: SilverFang01 - 01-28-2021, 03:50 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (4)

The background:
Amateur investors, perhaps propelled by a mix of greed and boredom, are looking to teach Wall Street a lesson. They’ve come together on a popular Reddit page, Wall Street Bets, to push the stock of companies like GameStop — up 1,700% — to outrageous highs.

The results:
Hedge-Fund Titans Lose Billions to Reddit Traders Running Amok

The crying:

My take:

Dear SEC:

Hi! Just a reminder that your job is to police the stock market so that people can have confidence in it and so that average investors don’t lose their shirts by following the rules and playing nice.

You may be tempted to just go after the “Reddit Traders” and leave the hedge funds alone. That would completely undermine the point of your existence. Either no one should play games with stock prices, or everyone gets to play games with stock prices.

I mention this because after the financial collapse in 2008, y’all spent a bunch of time investigating the few folks who showed you up to the public (you know, the heroes of The Big Short) rather than the investors who created the problems in the first place. For a lot of people, this confirmed that you were rigging the game for the few rather than protecting the public.

So don’t do that again.

Kthxbai.
