My one problem with that series, once I was older and understood context better was the whole militant vegan thing. There's a REASON we humans are omnivores, it's because we CAN'T live solely on plant material. Oh sure, we can for a long time. And a MOSTLY vegetarian diet can be good for some people. But eventually the lack of certain proteins and minerals does catch up with you.
Frankly I thought the heavyworlders had a POINT and got a incredibly raw deal all around. They're not culturally insane for using animal products like the Feds think. All life is predation in one form or another. You go down that path of logic too far and even killing plants becomes unacceptable. And then where will you be?
I didn't fault the characters. I still liked the books. And individually, I can't recall any of them channeling McCafrey's beliefs on this in a preachy fashion. But there was something deeply disturbing about that culture.
Pfagh... but this is veering dangerously close to politics, really. Still - it's interesting how one's viewpoints on certain books can change with differing levels of maturity as one goes forward in life.
