Pern didn't, at least, and if I recall correctly neither did the Crystal Singer series.
Oh, no. The vegan thing is very definitely McCaffrey. The Planet Pirates trilogy are actually explorations of the events surrounding a much older pair of books, Dinosaur Planet and Dinosaur Planet Survivors. I read those about a decade before the Planet Pirates stuff came out, and the vegan stuff just as aggressively present there.
I think Moon (and Jody Lynn Nye, who also worked on the series) did some work to mitigate it. Especially in Generation Warriors, where you get a look at the heavyworlders' society and hear about their history. But I found it interesting in spots in the trilogy, that the attitude presented by the vegan characters about eating meat in some spots closely resembled attitudes that modern-day folks have about vegans.
