Submitted the applciation to the VA -Iowa City yesterdat with a hiccup. There was some guy in the VRT computer lab that was sending crank faxes to good knows what agency in D.C. I'ved noticed him the other day making 65 copies of what looks like protests sheets. and he's using government resources to do that? And he doesn't believe that it won't be noticed? Yeesh...

I met someone in at a toy fair today who is in the same boat as me..single middle aged and out of the job since last year. He told me that the EDD is looking for veterans to advise other veterans. Funny considering I'm working doing for free at the VA, maybe I should give this job a shot.

I just realized tomorrow's the job fair I signed up for a few weeks back, and I'm still not properly recovered from the flu. I'm not sure I want to go if I'm hacking my lungs out every half hour and can't stand for extended times without getting a little dizzy still. But it's the first job fair I've signed up for, and it's specializing in my field. Dammit.

Go. Job fairs are your best chance (short of a competent recruiter) of getting your name and resume out to a large number of relevant HR departments, and they don't come along every week. You can't afford to miss this chance.
Treat it like a gaming convention - take plenty of liquids with you, and drink them when you need to.
And don't treat it like a gaming convention - attend to your personal hygiene, dress well (but comfortably), and take a big stack of resumes.
Don't expect to spend all day there, unless it's a huge job fair. Chance are you'll be finished in a half-day (the HR departments that know what they're doing don't interview people at the job fair), and you'll have the other half-day to prepare or recuperate, as appropriate.

It's only 4 hours -- 11 AM through 3 PM -- so no worries there. And I'd like to think that even drugged up on cold medicine I'd know to dress and be business-formal.

I'm still worried. I'm definitely feeling better... but judging by my experiences this afternoon and eving if I spend anything more than a few minutes walking around, I get a little shaky and lightheaded. I'm going to try to do this thing, but I'm scared that I'm going to fall over if I can't sit down often enough.

Well, I attended the job fair and workshop was informative. The gist I got from the workshop was this:
1. When your a veteran, place on the resume whether you qualify for Veterans Employment Opportunity Act or the Veterans Readjustment authority.
2. State on whether you had a Secret/ Top Secret clearance now or expired.
On that note, I just emailed my resume to the Department of Energy as a Program analyst. I'll have to dig my reserve records to place there my time as a reserve officer. It seems that there are more openings for assistant managers than there are for tech weenies.

I'm back. It was smaller than I expected -- only 8 or so tables, of which I went to five (taking nearly two hours to do so). Of the three I didn't visit, one was the "we advertise jobs but we really sell training" outfit I ran into early in my job search, the second had only a single job that was clearly entry level, and I passed on the third because I was yea-close to falling over at the end.
I am so not recovered from the flu yet. I'm back home with lunch in front of me, and I'm feeling worse after two hours in that hot, crowded room than I felt two days ago. Gah.

They're both essentially events held in (usually) poorly-ventilated rooms, with more people in attendance than should reasonably be squeezed in. There are more similarities than one would expect...

So I just got back from an interview with one of our local Best Buy stores. I'd had two with another location in the area, neither of which went well, so my expectations were quite low.
The interview started exactly on time, which was New and Different, and went reasonably well. When it was done, the interviewer went into the back, only to come back out and ask me if I could do another interview with the store manager immediately. I, of course, agreed.
That interview, if anything, went even better, and by the end of it, I was offered a sales floor job in their PC department. Part-time to start, but it can be made full-time if everybody's happy with the arrangement. I went from introduction to nearly employed (subject to drug/background formalities-I mean "checks") in just under an hour.
How's that for a good day?

Best Buy's a cool gig. I worked at my local store for a summer and I'm thinking about going back, at least temporarily. Generally nice people, good benefits and a pretty good discount.

By my estimate. I have placed about 30 job applications in 10 days. Given it takes about 6 months to complete the whole process to go thorugh for the federal, this might take a while, but I'm confident. It looks like I'll have no choice but to go either midwest or back east.

I just got an email from a prospective employer telling me that I wasn't selected for the position. Well, okay, but... it took 4 months for them to decide on someone for the spot? I applied for that job on 29 October 2009... sheesh.
