Just to do the actual math here:

$18.75/hr works out to about $36k/yr - a respectable wage for a bachelor living alone today, and not worrying about income tax (highest tax bracket in the 1840's was less than 5% It can be basically ignored as a factor here.)

For a man trying to support a Weasley-size family (wife and six kids)? No. Frelling. Way.

But that's not even a correct conversion. The OP has made some significant math errors.

15 shillings, in 1840, works out to about 95 pounds in today's money -- call it $120/wk for us USA'ians.
That's less than half of the $7.50 "minimum wage".

I had a girlfriend with pica.  It's all fun until you come back from the store with the wrong brand of chalk because she thinks the other brand of chalk tastes better.

RE: Image Thread 27 : the trilogy cubed
Believing or not believing in any particular philosophy is not the reason there. The problem is that the only people invested enough to put all their talent and effort into gaining positions where they will have control over other people, are the ones who really want control over other people. People who want to understand the universe and improve the world around them don't care about that, or at least not as much, so the politickers tick their polis and swell up until they rise to the level of their own incompetence.

Meh.

Four decades ago, we were telling people "The Moon landings will always be Not That Long Ago".

Two decades ago, we were telling people "The release of Pac-Man will always be Not That Long Ago".

Two decades from now, we'll be telling people "The COVID pandemic will always be Not That Long Ago".

Defining events happen once a generation.

(Oh, and it wasn't the Millennium that was the defining event for the 2000s. Everybody expected Y2K. It was 9/11 that surprised people and defined the age.)

Those events do not 'define an age'.

They are merely convenient reference markers.
RE: Image Thread 27 : the trilogy cubed
If anything, the Ukraine (and possibly Gaza) war(s) are more likely to rate as decade defining events; COVID is too likely to be here to stay and become normalized as just another seasonal bug to deal with. Turns out "avoid (thing) like the plague" means "go nuts for the first month or two, then get back to business as usual and complain about anyone who says 'no, wait, it's still dangerous.'"
