Fanfic Recommendations: The Next Generation

My own fault for buying an NVidia gpu, when I know they're shitters about *nix compatibility.

NVidia's GPUs should be compatible with damn near everything, especially Ubuntu distros these days, though? They're really pushing the AI stuff, so they're going all out on server compatibility and the like.

That said, it sounds like the main issue is your lack of an ability to reliably read the console. I found a few guides on that on a quick search (e.g. here and here, not to mention the stuff here), but I figure that you've probably already looked them -- or things like them. Not much else I can really say without details, but your problem is *probably* solvable. When and if I get the chance, I'll try to take a look at Calibre's Linux package dependencies; I may be able to figure something out.

Maybe.

Along Came A Skitter

In which Taylor Hebert lives not on Earth Bet, but on a backwater Periphery world in the Capellan Confederation (sucks to be her). She's been working on repairing a junked SDR-5V Spider battlemech when a group of bandits throws down with the Undersiders mercenary mechwarrior unit, and Lung's mech steps on her workshop.

An Old Man's Retirement
(Worm/Bleach)

Shigekuni Genryuusai Yamamoto, aka Old Man Genocide, has left the Quincies, the Court of Pure Souls, the Thousand-Year Blood War, and all of that behind. Where does he find himself? Of all places, a somewhat dilapidated port city somewhere vaguely in New England, USA, called "Brockton Bay".

It's time to settle down and relax, right?

A new cultivator story, Garden of Silk.

Slate Greystone is eldest son of his clan. He is smart, forthright, and skilled. He also has the chi potential of a hole in the ground. His cultivation goes nowhere, and unless he improves soon, his position as heir will be given over to his younger brother, who is, to put it plainly, an idiot.

So, if Slate cannot improve through divine cultivation, then perhaps demonic cultivation will have better results....

One of two fics I learned about through deviant lexikimble being commissioned to illustrate scenes from it: Wednesday at Sunnydale.

Alpha Ricter Wrote:Standing at the locker next to his was Wednesday Addams herself, the new student everyone had been whispering about.

She wore a dress as black as a raven's wing, and a jacket black as a moonless night, accented with thin vertical stripes that whispered of cemetery gates, and dark hair braided with surgical precision. She moved with the quiet certainty of someone used to being watched, but not seen. Xander couldn't help but stare, curiosity winning over nerves.

She was all angles and careful movements, a shadow in a sunlit school. Standing there, Xander recognized her posture, spine straight as a ruler, eyes that never lingered too long on any face. He'd seen that careful self-containment before in his own bathroom mirror, back when he was the punchline everyone waited for.

A knot formed in his gut as he remembered how eagerly he'd passed along those stories about her, adding his own embellishments without a second thought. He'd found it so simple to spread stories about a stranger, just a name floating through the halls, but now that stranger had materialized at the locker beside his, flesh and blood and unsmiling eyes.

She closed her locker with a soft click, gathering her books against her chest like a shield, and pivoted to leave. Xander watched her go, his stomach twisting with the half-forgotten taste of freshman year, all those hallways he'd walked alone while whispers trailed behind him like toilet paper stuck to his shoe.

"Hey," he said, planting himself in the moment. "Welcome to Sunnydale."

She paused, eyes flicking back to him in surprise. Her face was a porcelain mask, but he caught the faintest crack in her expression, something like confusion.

"Are you okay?" That was all he could manage to say next.

"The rumors arrived before I did," she said, voice low and deliberate.

He nodded, guilt gnawing at his insides, he tried for a joke. "Most new students don't come with their own urban legend. Need help finding your class?"

Quote: two screaming projectiles shot through the corridor wrapped in paper towels and cafeteria napkins, crashing directly into Tanya's office.

The door flew open, scattering croissants across the carpet. Tanya looked up from her paperwork.

Shaggy and Scooby lay in a heap, covered in tinsel, copier paper, and baguettes.

"Congratulations," Tanya said calmly. "You're both promoted to morale officers."

"Like, uh, does the job come with dental?"

"It comes with stock shares, and an agreement to not sue for damages." Tanya replied, sipping her tea.

Shaggy whispered to Scooby, "Like, dude, I think she's scarier than the ghost."

Chapter Index for Scaly Worm by SomeoneYouWontRemember (AO3 link)

Taylor is a gud snek -- well, okay, no, she's an utter shit-stirring chaos gremlin of a snake, and doesn't know she even can turn back 9into a human for a dozen or so chapters, but is at least hero-adjacent, limits her throublemaking to mischief and petty theft, her antics have Panacea generally irked-amused instead of misanthropic-depressed, and she ends up inciting and enabling forays into active vigilantism, which in a Worm story qualifies as good deeds, right?

The turn to shipping after discovering how to turn back is largely as expected for an AO3 fic, but genuinely sweet for the most part, and the story as a whole is laugh-out-loud funny frequently.

The Weaver's Apocrypha (Post GM Worm/The Nebula's Civilization)

Post-GM Taylor has been trying to have her new life. College, job hunting, playing computer games. She's been playing a game called "Lost World", and apart from a certain game where a bunch of the largely Korean player base tried to bully her, enjoying it.

Except it's being used to recruit a group of people to act as (easily manipulated) "gods" for a fantasy world.

Egocentric Temporal Order Bias

In which Anakin Skywalker, about to lead the 501st to storm the Jedi Temple, suddenly finds himself thrown back through time to years before the Battle of Naboo. He proceeds to Anakin all over the galaxy and overturn everything in sight.....

You've seen Caiaphas Cain as an Imperial Commissar. A Space Marine. A warlord of Chaos. A Social General of the Lyran Commonwealth.

Now he's taking on the position of ... Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in

Caiaphas Cain and the Chamber of Secrets

Mahou Shojou Lyrical Taylor

Yup. Taylor's a Magical Girl. With an Intelligent Device. And a set of weird alien gizmos to hunt down. And some visitors from the TSAB. Let's have some fun, shall we?

A Fox in Gehenna

Hoshikawa Kanami finds herself waking up as a cute foxgirl in a weird place called Kivotos, and finds herself a student at the chaotic and weird Gehenna Academy. A "friend insert" (think one-on-one roleplay between the author and the SI) into Blue Archive. Expect action, romance, mystic weirdness, and schoolgirls with guns.

Alternative Helix
(Worm/HI3/HSR)

Taylor has found herself with some interesting faces sharing her headspace. By one view, they're all the same person. They wouldn't exactly agree... but they do agree that they're all, even Taylor, Vill-V.

Fortunately there's room in the world for a bit of fun. And some mad science. And some other familiar faces.

I've been reading this one for the last several weeks/couple months and I second the recommendation. Very well done, and very restrained compared to the last Nanoha/Worm crossover I read (whose title I can't remember but which basically followed an exponential escalation path with Taylor essentially rebuilding the Belkan empire from scratch in just a couple years in a not-entirely-intentional fake-real turn).

If so, then I agree, the Escalation was Escalated vey far there.

I've found MSLT to be getting a bit - thin.

Finding it hard to put into words. It updates like clockwork every two days but it feels more like it's being fillered up to update, rather than actually do anything. The plot's being stretched thin. Or each update is only a moment, rather than a coherent whole.
Oh sweet meteor of death
Fall upon us.
Deliver us in fire
To Peace everlasting.
