training aid: Keep Yourself Alive by Queen
Posted by: classicdrogn - 05-24-2020, 10:48 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (1)

non-embedded (also part of a playlist of the Queen Official channel)

Another one that's old enough that it's probasbly been on Doug's list for a while, IC if not used in game or in story. While the title suggests a healing song, the lyrics are more along the lines of the things you need to live rather than just survive, with the repeated theme being "keep on trying, a little better, a little stronger every day," which to me suggests acting to let Doug and possibly anyone working with him within his AoE to use it like the theme to a training montage, getting a complete workout or lesson or whatever to make an optimal day's progress in the chosen subject without over-stressing body or mind. Of course, that's so obviously useful that it would be sort fo a wonder that it hadn't come up IC, but it could easily be part of just the unremarked downtime "stay fit and keep advancing" work of an RPG (based) character.

  telepathy/mental healing: Breakthrough by Queen

non-embedded

Superhero stories especially love giving a character important information and then putting them in a coma or leaving them too traumatized to talk about it, to build up the melodrama - so this is sure to be one of the more useful, if situational, songs in Doug's lineup. I don't remember if Faith is still conked out at the time he's in Buffyverse, but if so she would be a prime candidate to use it on, and that kind of thing is common enough across lots of media to have plenty of other opportunities if not.

As an aside, this video is kind of ridiculous but in a way that looks like it was just super-fun to make. Like, the A&R man said "We're going to make a video for Breakthrough, any ideas for what you want to do?" and one of the guys said "I like trains. Can we have the band playing on a stage pulled by a train? And maybe smash through a wall or something, you know, to tie it in to the song." And the record company guy was like "Yes we can totally do that, sounds awesome, the kids'll love it. This will definitely sell records!" because he'd snorted approximately five kilograms of cocaine already that morning, and didn't come down at least until the contract to charter the train was signed and by then the only way forward was (puts on sunglasses) to see it through.

While I'm talking about Queen songs, though, how about Invisible Man? Any effects beyond the obvious, and possibly bringing a second person into the effect as well given the lyrics also mention "I can see right through you?"

  Happy Discordianism Day!

It's 23/5, or 5/23 in the States. And we all know what the Law of Fives says about those numbers. (If you don't know, see here and here.)

Enjoy the day! (Or what's left of it.)

... the first commercial radio broadcast in Canada took place. The transmission was from Montreal to Ottawa.

We're getting a pair of commemorative stamps for the occasion. There's some interesting background in that story...

According to the news at the time, the first song ever aired on a commercial broadcast in Canada was a live performance of "Those Endearing Young Charms". (There's no indication in the article whether the Xylophone Gag was involved.)

Unintended consequences? Acting on incel ideology defined as terrorism
Posted by: robkelk - 05-20-2020, 08:53 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (8)

Back in February, a 17-year-old killed a woman at a massage parlour and attempted to kill two other people

This week, he's been charged with terrorism.

Quote:Police say they later determined the attack was inspired by incel ideology. Participants in the misogynistic online movement typically express frustration toward women over their own lack of sexual success, and sometimes threaten violence against them. Police classify it as an "ideologically motivated violent extremist" movement.

Ideological motivation is enough for a felony - in this case, murder - to be classified as "terrorist activity" according to the Criminal Code of Canada.

So...

"Defining incels as terrorists" is going to be tested in the courts - unless there's a plea bargain. I have no idea what outcome I want to see here... (Not that I'll have any say in determining the outcome.)

Working songs for working protagonists (WIP)
Posted by: classicdrogn - 05-19-2020, 10:19 PM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (5)

Fanon Xander sings:

Sing a song of suck-heads, leaches gonna die
Four and twenty vampires, trapped under the sky
When the morning sun came, the vamps began to burn
Isn't it convenient, the way the wor-ld turns?

"And it's gonna keep turning for at least one more day, without you jerks in it."

Feel free to contribute, original (or "original") bits like this, or quotes if something fitting appears in a fic (original, pro, or fan) you liked. Hopefully I won't forget about the thread if and when another occurs to me. Now where did I post the versions of the Major General's song from The Pirates of Penzance and My Alien by A Simple Plan I made for that alt-power Taylor Hebert fic where she got a Cauldron vial as part of a contract to be Emma's supervillain nemesis? I really felt proud of managing a complete alternate version of The Major General rather than just a verse or fragment.
