  Happy V-E Day!

Today is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in World War II.

I understand the celebrations are muted this year... Smile

  WTF did he say?!?
Posted by: Norgarth - 05-07-2020, 05:32 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (3)

Not Trump this time, but rather Republican Rep Steve King (Iowa)

He was trying to make a case for implementing anti-abortion laws, without allowing exceptions in cases of rape and incest, so what what does he say?

There Would Be No Population Left If It Weren't For Rape And Incest

Needless to say, that kicked off a shitstorm.

this is for stuff that isn't science, but isn't a simple image or video either.

From the website LGBTQ Nation, a commentary posted back in March
Satan resigns because he can't keep up with Donald Trump

And this one is from the end of 2018, but I recently saw a link pop up on Facebook
talking about a Chinese family who bought a 'Mastif pup' that turned out to be a bear cub

Question [OOC]Do We Want a Discord Server?
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 05-06-2020, 02:32 AM - Forum: Hangar 13 - Replies (12)

I brought this up in the COVID-19 check-in thread, but I feel that I need to ask here as well.

Pros:

  • It will help cut down on less-than-consequential natter here in the forum.
  • It will permit real-time conversations which means actual discussions.
  • It provides a fast means of sharing files of modest size.
Cons:
  • Not everyone has Discord.
  • Those that do will have yet another server to keep tabs on.
I'm gonna throw up a poll, but if anyone has any thoughts to share, please do.

EDIT: Oh, and before anyone asks, I'll be the one to manage the server so no one else has that added to their plate.

  Happy May 5!

May 5, 2020, is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II.

It's also Children's Day (こどもの日, Kodomo no Hi) in Japan, and Cinco de Mayo in Mexico.

So if you're looking for an excuse to celebrate something, you now have three of them. Any more?

Oh, bleep no, Asian Giant Hornets have arrived in North America
Posted by: LilFluff - 05-02-2020, 08:42 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (4)

New York Times, so may (will almost certainly) end up behind a pay wall, ‘Murder Hornets’ in the U.S.: The Rush to Stop the Asian Giant Hornet. Worries are both for local bee populations, as well as people considering that receiving multiple stings can be lethal to humans even if you aren't allergic. To put it another way, the Fount of All Knowledge notes that one nickname for this bug is yak-killer hornet.

2020 can go do anatomically inappropriate and unlikely things to itself.

  A Little Honda 50....
Posted by: Dartz - 05-02-2020, 07:09 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (3)

Another Weird Irish Thing

---
My little Honda 50 she's rapid and she's nifty.
She'll do a hundred and fifty on a windy day.
My little Honda 50, hit the nitro and she'll shift me.
Get me away from the Garda any day.

I got her in the Buy and Sell back in '92.
A travellin' man in a caravan said "This is the bike for you".
He was lookin' for a hundred, I gave him thirty two.
Took her for a spin out the Kinnegad Road and begod she feckin' flew.

I drove her into Newbridge lookin' for a couple of parts.
Alloy wheels, a sat-nav and a new push button start.
Headin' out to Robertstown for the bingo and the beer.
Comin' down the Hill of Allen she hit the ton in second gear.

I was ridin' across The Curragh nice and slow
The Guards pulled in behind me, Sergeant Kelly, don't you know.
I said, "O Buck, just my luck" and I hit the nitro hard.
By the time the squad hit Brookets Cross I had her parked in Brady's Yard.

----

I amn't sure what the Utility of a 50cc Honda Supercub that can hit 100mph in second gear would be - but there ya go.

  Looking for Tablet Recommendations
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 05-01-2020, 03:58 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

Some of you might recall that for many years we had a really nice ASUS Android tablet with a detachable keyboard that cost us surprisingly little (something like US$100 for the tablet itself and another $50 or so for the keyboard, which also had a second battery in it).  What I don't think I ever mentioned was that it started spazzing out on us a year or two back, and we ended up buying a similarly-priced and slightly smaller RCA tablet which also has a detachable keyboard (IIRC because the ASUS wasn't available any more?  I'll have to check now).

Anyway, the RCA gave us considerably less for our money than the ASUS.  I've been coping for a year or so now with what turned out to be not just a smaller screen but a lower-resolution one.  But last night Peggy used it for Skype for the first time, and we learned that the screen is even worse for video calls, and the camera in it is just as bad.

So we're in the market for a new tablet -- or maybe a new laptop.  Laptops I've already got a handle on, but can anyone offer any recommendations on tablets?  Largish display, high res and equally high res camera, detachable keyboard either standard or as an option?

Thanks!
