  Super Paper
Posted by: TheTwisted1 - 07-29-2007, 02:49 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

According to this article from ScienceNOW, scientists at Northwestern University have found a way to make particles of graphene oxide assemble into thin, paper-like sheets as strong as carbon nanotubes, and which can be scaled to any size. It does tend to lose stability when immersed in water (much like kevlar does, IIRC), and thus commercial production is many years away, at least. The potential uses, though, are many (space elevator, anyone). And, as one Slashdot commentor posed, "Just imagine what Yomiko Readman could do with that paper!"

  Strike Force night

For those able to make it, we are going to see if we can't pull off some Villainy/Heroics at 10 pm tonight. If we have enough 45+ characters, we'll try the Lady Grey TF/SF, if not we'll try to get one of the Strike forces done.
The Infamous needs to get some street cred, after all.

I finally got my PC (nicknamed Alpha) back from the shop...he's been evolving over the past 3 years into his current configuration. My principle always has been more banf for the buck (why pay top dollar when it can be yours for half price in 3 months?)
Ugrades:
1. Replaced motherboard with a Asus P5Pe-VM
2. Replaced CPU from 2.0 to 3.4 ghz.
3. Replaced the data drive from 250 to 500 gig.
4. Replaced the graphics card from an ATI 5950 to an nvidia Geoforce 6800 GT (thanks for the advice crhis)
5. Upgraded the power supply to 500 watts.
6. Installed a raid array with two 80 gig hard drives.
7. Replaced the former tv tuner card with an Asus P-7131 tuner card.
8. Installed an MSI dual net card (LAN and BT)
9. Replaced the old (2X) DVD-RW with the current version.
10. Installed 2 more auxiallry cooling fans for a grand total 3 auxillary cooling fans plus the fans for the graphics card, the cpu, power supply.
Total cost less labor is 800 bucks. The only thing left that's still the original components 3 years ago is the case.
I'm tempted to call my PC Frankie now. hehe.

Ok, Zilem Kain and I wish to do one or two task forces on Freedom server August 4th. We plan on running Synapse and Sister Psyche. If anyone can help we'd be most appreciative. I'll let people who wish to help know when we decide on a time.

SPOILERS!! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows SPOILERS!!
Posted by: Herr Bad Moon - 07-28-2007, 01:27 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (9)

Well, it's been almost a week since it came out so I figure it'd be safe to start prelimanary discussions at the very least.
Spoilers ahoy so you have been warned.

I liked it quite a bit. It was a much more serious offering than HBP was, or even any of the other books in that actaully stuff happens instead of just random scenes. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, and some of the plot devices FEEL like plot devices, but on the whole I thought it was one of her better books. Here's some quick thoughts on some of the characters without going too into the details.
Harry: Angsty, and toes the big black line of Good/Evil but ends up with the quiet heroism that stands out from the dramatic kind.
Ron: Gets some of the best lines and comes across as much more than just the Sidekick.
Hermione: Still a genius. But kinda scary in a second coming of Dumbledore way at times. If you've finished the book you'll know what that means.
Ginny: Who? Seriously underused in that she isn't used AT ALL. WTF? So much for any developement from books 5 & 6.
Dumbledore: Still some of that kindly old man there, but he's a Wizard in the High Fantasy sense. He'll use you and toss you aside when you've spent your usefulness and while he might cry as he does it he won't hesitate.
Voldemort: Woo! Way to not become a cackling Avada Kevadra Crucio machine. Was worried there for awhile.
Snape: Uh.... yeah, still conflicted about him.
Fred and George: Still some of the best bits of humor in the whole series, even when everythings going to shit. Would approve of the sea animal pun thread in the DW5 section.
Neville: Pimp supreme.
Lupin: So close to being even more developed, but gets tossed aside. Poor luck there chap.
Molly: Sigourney Weaver Maternal Award.
Dobby: HAW HAW.

Yukiyo wants to do a TF
Posted by: The Hunterminator - 07-27-2007, 02:14 PM - Forum: The Legendary - Replies (7)

Well, I'm almost through the ridiculously long busy period at my job and I'm taking two weeks of vacation, during which I plan on doing as many task forces as possible.
At the very least, I want to do the one in Striga that ends with the volcano going boom after you kill the load bearing boss because I MUST get a screenshot of Yukiyo asking "What does this do?" just before the base starts exploding.
And I was wondering, at level 30, what are the tasks forces Yukiyo can do and which of them are the most fun?

  A question on weapons....
Posted by: Ebony - 07-27-2007, 12:30 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (10)

Is the "Slapstick Effect" only for those things purposely designed and 'waved as weapons or does it apply to things can be used as improvised weapons as well. Every fen with a flying car has a weapon, after all. It's a big, blunt guided missile with no warhead that does its own mass in blunt trauma. Does the effect apply to vehicular melee?
In addition, if you, for example, 'wave a blade for hardness and edge, but it's still, essentially, just a sword or knife, does it get scrambled by the effect?Ebony the Black Dragon

  A Matter of Time...
Posted by: Cobalt Greywalker - 07-27-2007, 12:12 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (8)

OK, just an idle thought that mugged me today.
Are there timezones in Fenspace? I know Rob and myself tend to use GMT in our fics, but is there a Stellvia standard time or does it use whichever timezone Noah lived in as its standard time? Is there such a thing as Space Lag?
Are there timezones on Mars and Venus? If so, how many because of there differing rotational periods? Let's not forget, currently a Venus Day is longer than a Venus Year. Where's the Martian Prime Meridian?
Given the nature of Fenspace I've always assumed (and writen my fics based on this) that Fenspace is a 24x7 society and thus someone is doing something at all times. How much does this affect how things are done?
