  FFn changes?
Posted by: classicdrogn - 05-01-2019, 09:40 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - No Replies

Is it just my faulty memory, or did FFn just change the layout of favorites lists slightly, so there's now a <hr>-tag horizontal divider between each item? I'd almost swear they didn't have them up until I refreshed the page just now, but it's not something I consciously paid attention to before so it's hard to be completely certain.

What's Eating Up My Time At The Moment
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 04-30-2019, 07:41 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (24)

.jpg   compost_mulch.jpg (Size: 170.21 KB / Downloads: 356)

What you're looking at is about ten cubic yards each of hardwood mulch and (under the blue tarp) compost, filling up most of my driveway.  My after-hours job for as long as it takes is to spread all this in selected parts of the yard -- mostly in the front.

Last year we had the grass and topsoil removed around the twin maple trees on either side of the driveway (one of which you can see next to the car) and replaced with richer topsoil and a layer of mulch, as part of a program to save them from dying on us.  These two small mountains are this year's installment of the process.  You can't quite see it because it blends in with the pile in front of it, but the visible tree and its mulched area has already been dealt with (so the piles really aren't 10 cubic yards anymore).  In comparison, the little grey patch to the left of the car is what last year's mulch looks like now.

Anyway, if anyone wants to know why I'm not a) increasing byte counts on various works, b) playing the revived City of Heroes, or c) anything else that I might do in the evenings, it is because I am either a) performing back-breaking labor or b) recovering from back-breaking labor by drugging myself and sitting in a HoMedics massage chair.

"NRA in disarray: Infighting threatens gun group's future"

NRA in disarray: Infighting threatens gun group's future

So, is this yet another "looking from the outside and indulging in wishful thinking" piece, or is there something to it?

Although this part definitely isn't wishful thinking - it's statistics:

Quote:The United States, which accounts for just under five per cent of the world's population, now has 46 per cent of all civilian-owned guns.

Trump wants an immigration system 'like they have in Canada.'

Trump wants an immigration system 'like they have in Canada.' So, one without a border wall, then? Smile

More seriously, I wonder whether it'd fly. Remember what happened when Lyndon B. Johnson made a similar suggestion?

And, hey, look - he waited until he needed to put together his re-election platform before suggesting this.

Image loading weirdness in 1000 year Flood thread

I dunno if this is a forum issue or something to do with the site(s) Rob's getting the images from, but I have to bring up the context menu, and click "view image" to see them. If I page back after that, the images show up in the thread, but they don't load until I've done that.

I have checked other threads (e.g. Lynn's Rec Room Projects), and they don't seem to have this problem. It's just the one thread.

  Endgame (no spoilers)

Saw it (in 3D), loved it, thought it was great.  It did not feel like 3 hrs.

Oh, and there was no end credit scene, so you don't have to wait.

Don't think there's much else I can say that doesn't spoil something, so I'll leave it at that

Another white supremacist shoots a synagogue

Suspect in deadly synagogue shooting near San Diego wrote anti-Semitic manifesto

I am so fed up with this. We should publicly name every white supremacist, writer, blogger and politician that inspires these things. Hound them and expose them for the monsters they are. Starting with that orange dusted Russian investment property with dementia currently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

  ESA announces upcoming asteroid impact.
Posted by: Dartz - 04-27-2019, 12:55 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (18)

Unfortunately, it's a #fictionalevent as part of an excersise for Planetary Defense Conference to decide how to actual deal with an incoming city killer  and who needs to know what, and what if anything to do about it?

Had my hopes up for a minute but so it goes.

There's a fairly shite article from CNeT here

ESA's Twitter account is roleplaying the end of a small part of the world

So if we can redirect it, where exactly do we want the asteroid to land?

Oh sweet meteor of death.
Fall upon us and deliver us in fire
To peace everlasting

[IC][Arc 1][Spamfic] An apple to keep the doctor nearby
Posted by: robkelk - 04-26-2019, 08:13 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (2)

I know I said I'd let everyone else catch up... but BA said it's too quiet in here. And this doesn't really affect the overall plot.

No date stamp yet. Think of this as a coda for Arc 1, before things get hairy in Arc 2.

Ottawa, ON, Canada
Date TBD

"It's the smallest one she had."

Rob looked at the apple on the table - a whole golden apple, sitting beside a glass of water. "Not that I don't appreciate what you gave up to get this, but... why?"

Ami sighed. "I'm being selfish. You're the only man I want to live the rest of my life with."

"No, I meant 'why did you use your divine wish for this?'"

"That's the question that I answered."

Rob thought for a moment. "But I already have a lifespan that's longer than anyone else's, other that Hyoga, the Juraians, or... Oh. Or you and the other Senshi, who expect to outlive Hyoga and me. But if I do this, I'll end up outliving Hyoga and Mii."

"I know. And I feel so sorry for them, but if new people keep getting displaced here, we'll probably find another way to extend everybody's lives. But I want this for you, now. And I already know you asked Washuu-chan not to make you look any younger than you are."

Rob's eyes narrowed. "That's supposed to be covered under doctor-patient confidentiality."

"I didn't ask her. I've been looking at you for months, and you aren't getting any younger."

"Oh. Of course. I'm not used to being the least intelligent one in the relationship."

Ami stepped forward and hugged Rob. Looking up at him, she replied, "You are not stupid. You know things that I don't. Your approach to problem solving isn't the same as mine. Don't get hung up on a test score. You're smart."

"Smart enough to fall in love with you."

She smiled. "And I love you too. But I want you to look like you're close to my age. Will you do this? For me and my selfishness?"

He kissed her on the forehead, then stepped back. "All right."

He picked up the apple... and he ate it.

Rob felt his few remaining aches vanish, and noticed his vision sharpening. Looking in the mirror, he saw the gray in his hair turn back to brown. For a moment, he wondered how far the effects would go... then he saw that his looks had stabilized. He still had a bit too much weight around the waist, but not as much as before, and his skin wasn't pockmarked with acne. Worried for a moment, he mentally reached out to the glass of water that had been beside the apple, and relaxed when he had no trouble lifting the water out of the glass.

"I think I'm in my mid-20s. We have to remember to thank Idunn, somehow. How do I look?"

"Yummy!"

"'Yummy'? Are you sure you aren't Minako-san?"

Ami grinned. "You should be able to tell the two of us apart by now."

"Yeah. She's got the magazine-cover-girl looks. You're the gorgeous one."

Ami's grin changed to a smile. "Flatterer."

"Maybe, but I'm not lying. Of all of my fiancees, you are the most beautiful. And the smartest."

"Minako isn't your fiancee."

"You're right. Of all the Senshi, you're definitely in the top two."

"Oh? Who do I lose out to?"

"Nobody. You tie with... Oh, but I shouldn't say."

"Are you keeping secrets from me?"

Rob smiled. "I'm letting you figure it out for yourself. I think you already have enough clues."

What a once-in-a-millennium flood looks like
Posted by: robkelk - 04-26-2019, 06:32 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (25)

Ottawa had a once-in-a-century flood two years ago. This year's flooding is worse.

Water flowing over the top of a hydroelectric dam east of Ottawa, on a tributary that drains into the Ottawa River downstream of Ottawa and upstream of Montreal:

Ottawa is under a state of emergency.

Oh, and we're getting another 35mm of rain/snow today and tomorrow.

(I live on high ground, and I have enough bottled potable water to last two days - more than enough time to drive out of town, buy more, and drive back. Don't worry about me.)

Oh, yes - we aren't the only ones affected.

The Trans-Canada Highway is washed out between Mattawa and Deep River. Traffic is being diverted through Algonquin Park, adding over an hour to travel time.

The Trans-Canada Highway is washed out between Fredericton and Moncton. Traffic is being diverted along the Bay of Fundy via Saint John, adding over a half-hour to travel time.

And, while the TCH is okay in Quebec, many of the cities along the St. Laurence aren't... including Montreal.
