  RWBY Volume 5
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 10-03-2017, 11:58 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (125)

Volume 5 premieres in 11 days, so I figured I'd open up the inevitable thread for it -- and I'd do it with this video, a link to which Rooster Teeth sent me last night:

  Minor configuration change
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 10-03-2017, 11:33 AM - Forum: Forums - No Replies

I just noticed that some of our low-post-count threads were still getting a "hot" flag.  Turns out there are two unrelated criteria for a "hot" thread -- number of posts in it, and number of views.  I'd set the post threshold to 195, like on the old board, but I somehow overlooked the other, which was set to 150 views.  I just bumped that up to 1000.

Not that I really expect anyone to be concerned, but someone might notice and wonder why all those little red dots went away.

Question [OOC] Need some help with Montreal
Posted by: robkelk - 10-02-2017, 07:27 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (4)

It appears that Seraviel hasn't registered on the new forum, so I'm going to have to make this a general request for assistance. I've written myself into a corner in my latest sidestory - and I'm only at the second scene!

The more fashion-conscious of IC-Rob's boarders have collided head-first with the lack-of-any-fashion-sense-whatsoever that is Ottawa winter wardrobe, and have decided to hop on a train for a day trip to Montreal. The trouble is, I have no idea what Montreal winter fashion looks like (or looked like last winter) or where in Montreal to find it.

Where do they go, remembering they're essentially tourists? What do they find? How badly are they overcharged? How much do they have to pay for their winter wardrobes?

And one for BlackAeronaut: Does the translation effect work on a second foreign language, or will the girls need to stay in west Montreal where they're reasonably assured of finding shop clerks who speak English?

Star [OOC-ish] PDF of my sidestories
Posted by: robkelk - 10-02-2017, 06:14 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (4)

A little something for folks who like PDFs.

Settings:

  • Page size 5.5"x8.5" (half a "Letter" sheet), 1.5cm margins.
  • Story titles in 14-point Century Gothic
  • Main text in 10-point Century Schoolbook, with 0.5cm first-line indents.
  • Monospaced text in 10-point Courier New

Do people like these settings? I know it's an old-fashioned font choice, but I like it.

Assuming I can update the attachment, I'll do so when I've written more stories. EDIT: Updated December 30, 2017.

EDIT: Oh, and I thought I'd make it a bit easier to find story threads... but I can only edit the first post in a thread if I'm the one who posted it.

It is amusing. It is Terrifying. It's hilarious. It's horrifying.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico continues to disintegrate unnoticed by many who don't live there. And here we assumed Trump cared about nothing but PR.....

Looks like they're winning. People are more concerned about football players kneeling and a tin-pot in a faraway country, than they are about the country disintegrating around them. If there has been one thing this white house has been good at, it's been focusing attention on the little retarded things rather than the outright malicious things.....

Are there any tokusatsu fans here?

I need to know whether this freebie is an original character or based on an existing hero. Does anybody recognize her?

EDIT: Never mind - a bit deeper digging has revealed that she's an Ultra Series character.

(Okay... if I reply to my own post, the earlier post is edited instead.)

  Flying Dutchman
Posted by: hazard - 09-30-2017, 09:24 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (1)

This is a song with an... odd, effect.

Upon starting this song a battered 17th/18th century sailing frigate appears and asks for the ship Doug's on to deliver some letters for them. If the ship does not do so nothing happens.

If the ship does, the weather steadily gets worse but the winds push the ship faster and faster to its destination. At this point it's also committed; it either reaches safe harbour or everyone on board dies. Anyone who fails a Sailing check during the pursuit either dies or suffers severe injury. And because the weather gets worse and worse the difficulty of the checks keeps rising.

On the one hand, this is a risky song to use.

On the other, if you need a ship to get somewhere fast, or at least faster than it should it might well be worth the risk. Whether or not those who die are damned is unknown.

Web hosting for the photobucketly challenged
Posted by: Morganite - 09-29-2017, 10:35 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (8)

So, my housing situation has kind of settled down (in a different state! How did they convince me to do that!), and I've decided I want to get back into the Let's Play thing. There's just one problem.

And that's just a little absurd.

So I got to thinking, if I have to deal with moving everything around anyway, I'd like to get some proper hosting. Someplace I can upload my html files too, and have everything how I want it, and not have to split entries up randomly and edit links in and so forth. Don't need any fancy engines or frameworks, just a place to put some flat files. That doesn't require me to know what I'm doing. And that's cheap.

Labster brought up ramnode during the forum transition, which looks pretty good on the 'cheap' aspect... but they also seem to require you to know what you're doing. And have a domain name. I don't really want to buy a domain name for various reasons.

Got any suggestions?

-Morgan.

The "What Would A Fanfic With This Title Be About" Thread
Posted by: Lubaf - 09-29-2017, 05:56 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (4)

In honor of the new forums, it's the game that went 30 pages in the last one, "What would a work (fanfic or otherwise) with the following name be about?" (Note that there are some new ones here not found in the previous thread). Feel free to suggest your own.

  • Normative Vacuum
  • For The Love Of Murder
  • Vampire Watermelons
  • Theories of International Relations and Superheroes
  • Principia Homicidii
  • Luck Tales (woo-oh!)
  • Familiar of Aleph Null
  • Why Can't We Be Enemies?
  • A World of Pure Recrimination
  • Eat Shiitake And Die!
  • Non-Indicative Title
  • Master of the Flying Electric Chair
  • HungerXHunger
  • Exactly What It Says On The Tin
  • Rainbow Dash Goes Crazy And Totally Whales On Everyone
  • Unlimited Moe Works
  • Moe Moe Moe (How Do You Like It?)
  • Transformers Sucks, And I'll Tell You Why At Great Length
  • Prince King
  • Shave The Animals!
  • The Dark Souls of _______ Fanfiction
  • Kitten Chow Main
  • Slash and Hack
  • Hart and Stole
  • Turducken Is Tasty
  • Generic Worm Altpower Fic #2615
  • History of the Decline And Fall of the Equestrian Empire
  • This Kind of Idiot Would Do That
  • Oldblood
  • It's Always Sunny In Westeros
  • The People of the State of New York v. Sherlock Holmes
  • Even Worse
  • Kidneyfish
  • Things To Do in Denver When You're Death
  • The Lawsuit of Batman v. Superman, As Presided Over By Judge Dread
  • Longcat is Short
  • And That's All I've Got For Now

And, since I've provided so many, I'll answer two of my own:

Principia Homicidii: Professor Moriarty spins out a assassination plan that's designed to fail and hand the would be killers to Sherlock Holmes while making it look like the killers were incompetent in following through on his plan. The psychology of these would-be murderers figures heavily in said clever double-cross.
Things To Do in Denver When You're Death: There's a Grim Reaper convention in Colorado; in attendance are the Deaths of the Discworld, of the Endless, a contingent of Reapers from Dead Like Me, and The Raven Queen. One part Existential Philosophy, one part a tourist travelogue, and one part not very good death related puns.

Thanks
