I'm trying to find a copy of the "book cover" someone created for it.  If you have it, could you please send me a copy?  Thanks!

Remember that last year someone posted a comic by french artist Boulet ("Dark"), that he had done in 24 hours for the Angouleme festival.
This seems to be a regular event for him, because this year's one is now up and translated. Its at http://english.bouletcorp.com/2013/02/04/paola-4/ . Don't forget to click on "REACT" at the bottom to see a little omake.

  UPNP problems
Posted by: Sweno - 02-05-2013, 01:07 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (4)

Hey everyone, I'm not sure how many of you have heard about this from other sources, but I'm posting this in the hopes that it'll prevent a few problems for some of you.

Short Story: turn of UPNP, now. *seriously*

Long Story:
UPNP (aka universal plug and play) is a communication protocol designed to make it easier for all the devices on the local network (your xbox/ps3/computer/whatever) to negotiate with the router about what ports they need open so things just work (meaning you don't have to worry that your favorite FPS wants ports 27000 - 27015 open, and that minecraft wants 25565).

This is generally seen as an improvement by users, and a security nightmare by network administrators. But because this was only supposed to be functional from in a private network (aka only devices located locally), no one raised that large of a fuss and life moved on.

But last week several security researchers found out some very worrying news. A significant percentage of routers were responding to UPNP requests from the public internet. Meaning that malicious entities can just tell your router to let them in.
What is a significant percentage you ask, try 81 Million (2.2% of the internet).

What is worse is that 20% (~16 million) of these can be exploited by one (1) udp packet.
Given the fact that there are 8 vulnerabilities discovered in how these routers deal with UPNP, I strongly believe that the percentage will only rise.

So what can you do?
Log into your router, and turn off UPNP.

If you want to make sure that UPNP is turned off Steve Gibson has added UPNP detection to his Shields Up tool (link).
Cisco has also released a document specifying what models of Cisco/Linksys routers are vulnerable (link)
If you want the to read all the gritty details, the can be found here (pdf)
This was also covered on Security Now, if you want to listen to a 1.5 hour discussion about all of this (youtu.be/wEa43qM4JjQ, you can skip ahead to the 9:45 mark)

Edit: and now I can't figure out how to post just a link to youtube *grumble*

  The wrong homonym
Posted by: robkelk - 02-05-2013, 04:49 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (38)

(Or, more accurately, the wrong homophone.)

I considered posting this in the "Advice, tools, and other goodies for writers" thread, but it's only one example of using the wrong word that sounds like the right word... and folks might know of more.

Spotted on the Daz3D forums:

Intended: "armour plates."
Used: "armour plaits."

(Talk about a hairy situation!)

Has anyone else seen more of these lately?

It struck me that, once Doug learned about superheroes, he might look for songs about them, to duplicate abilities. Most of them are a bit deconstructionist and probably aren't helpful ("Jimmy Olsen's Blues" and "Kryptonite" come to mind), but "The Ballad of Barry Allen" provides a pretty good internal monologue of what it would be like to be the Flash. I think 4:16 of moving so fast that the world seems stationary might be a good power for Doug.

  Harry Potter Fanfic Cliches
Posted by: murmur - 02-03-2013, 10:52 PM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (121)

Hey everybody.

So I've been writing a fanfic, Harry Potter and A Memory of Light, and also re-read chapters 1 and 2 of the DW step.  However, I realized something: I have no idea what the harry potter fanfic cliches are.

See, I pretty much avoided Harry Potter and HP fanfic until about five years ago, and so I missed a lot of the furor and fanfic that came out in the gaps between the books.

Now I know some from general pop-culture osmosis, though only by their names and entries in tv tropes, such as Fem-Blaise, Draco in leather pants, marriage contract and soul bonds--actually i have no idea what the last two connote, as I'm assuming these both have to do with love and/or sex but beyond that I've got nothing.

From reading the DW steps, apparently there is always a sorting ceremony and mysterious prophecies by Sybil Trelawney.

Having read some of the peggy-sue HP-fics out there, I am aware of the dangers of ultra-powerful Harry Potter, and emotionally mature Harry Potter.  Trust me when I say that neither of those things will be the case in my fic, justified or not.

So, I am asking here, what other cliches are out there in HP-fic-dom?

-murmur
warning: just because it's a cliche, doesn't mean that I won't use it.  I've already used a peggy sue, and therefore am not afraid of more cliches.

There has to be "prior art" for this somewhere...

The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/02/01 ... op_design/]Apple trademarks the SHOP

Quote:The application to exclusively own this particular store arrangement - specifically "rectangular tables arranged in a line" - was filed in December 2010 and granted on 22 January 2013.

Wait a minute - there is prior art for this: practically any church rummage sale. But individual churches aren't as wealthy as Apple...

  Looking for a software recommendation
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 02-02-2013, 04:43 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (21)

Peg and I have just gotten a tablet, an ASUS Transformer TF300T, a very nice Android tablet with a keyboard/dock and lots of other nice features. What it doesn't have is a native movie playing app which handles subtitles in Matroska videos.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a good movie player that can show Matroska subtitles?
Thanks!
