iPhone Users: "Suck It!", says AT&T
Posted by: Sofaspud - 06-02-2010, 07:28 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (7)

http://www.pcworld.com/ar...nlimited_data_plans.html
I'm not an iPhone user (not for lack of desire, but lack of funds), so this doesn't affect me directly.  But I can't help but see this as a money-grab by AT&T.  I have a long history in the wireless market working for providers; I *know* how expensive it is to deploy new and upgrade old infrastructure.  It's a right pain in the ass, it really is.  But you have to look at long-term goals, and I don't think AT&T remembered that here.  They're panicking about network congestion and bleeding coffers and trying to solve it in the time-honored Corporate fashion, which is to say, stick it to the users, they're sheep and don't mind being sheared.
Bad AT&T.  Yeah, your legalese covers you in court, and you can change the terms at any time, like you're doing... but legalese doesn't help with consumer opinion.  And I hope this bites you in the ass.

  Defying Gravity
Posted by: Proginoskes - 06-02-2010, 06:19 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (1)

Defying Gravity, from the Original Cast Recording of Wicked.

Quote:GLINDA

(spoken) Elphaba - why couldn't you have stayed calm for

once, instead of flying off the handle!

(sung) I hope you're happy!

I hope you're happy now

I hope you're happy how you

Hurt your cause forever

I hope you think you're clever!

ELPHABA

I hope you're happy

I hope you're happy, too

I hope you're proud how you

Would grovel in submission

To feed your own ambition

BOTH

So though I can't imagine how

I hope you're happy right now

GLINDA

(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry:

(sung) You can still be with the Wizard

What you've worked and waited for

You can have all you ever wanted:

ELPHABA

(spoken) I know:

(sung) But I don't want it -

No - I can't want it

Anymore:

Something has changed within me

Something is not the same

I'm through with playing by the rules

Of someone else's game

Too late for second-guessing

Too late to go back to sleep

It's time to trust my instincts

Close my eyes: and leap!

It's time to try

Defying gravity

I think I'll try

Defying gravity

And you can't pull me down!

GLINDA

Can't I make you understand?

You're having delusions of grandeur:

ELPHABA

I'm through accepting limits

''cause someone says they're so

Some things I cannot change

But till I try, I'll never know!

Too long I've been afraid of

Losing love I guess I've lost

Well, if that's love

It comes at much too high a cost!

I'd sooner buy

Defying gravity

Kiss me goodbye

I'm defying gravity

And you can't pull me down:

(spoken) Glinda - come with me. Think of what we could

do: together.

(sung) Unlimited

Together we're unlimited

Together we'll be the greatest team

There's ever been

Glinda -
Dreams, the way we planned 'em

GLINDA

If we work in tandem:

BOTH

There's no fight we cannot win

Just you and I

Defying gravity

With you and I

Defying gravity

ELPHABA

They'll never bring us down!

(spoken) Well? Are you coming?

GLINDA

I hope you're happy

Now that you're choosing this

ELPHABA

(spoken) You too

(sung) I hope it brings you bliss

BOTH

I really hope you get it

And you don't live to regret it

I hope you're happy in the end

I hope you're happy, my friend:

ELPHABA
So if you care to find me

Look to the western sky!

As someone told me lately:

"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"

And if I'm flying solo

At least I'm flying free

To those who'd ground me

Take a message back from me

Tell them how I am

Defying gravity

I'm flying high

Defying gravity

And soon I'll match them in renown

And nobody in all of Oz

No Wizard that there is or was

Is ever gonna bring me down!

GLINDA

I hope you're happy!

CITIZENS OF OZ

Look at her, she's wicked!

Get her!

ELPHABA

:Bring me down!

CITIZENS OF OZ

No one mourns the wicked

So we've got to bring her

Down!
Thoughts on powers: flight (obviously), with a much less extreme version of the "I Will Survive" "obnoxious self-sufficiency" side-effect. If Doug were a man of lesser spine or moral fibre, I would suggest a confidence-boost pertaining exclusively to sticking to one's principles, but as he is I rather doubt he'd even notice.

Latest Brain Twister From the US Supreme Court
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 06-02-2010, 02:47 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (8)

Remaining silent in the face of police questioning does not automatically invoke your right to remain silent.  According to this new ruling from the SCOTUS, it doesn't count unless you actually say, "I'm invoking my right to remain silent."  Until then, the cops can do anything they want to try and trick you into incriminating yourself.
Three guesses how the voting shakes out on ideological grounds, and the first two don't count.  And remember, this is the same court that decided your right to an attorney has a two-week expiration on it.

  Webcomic Reccomendation: Outsider
Posted by: Logan Darklighter - 06-01-2010, 09:22 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

Outsider is a webcomic by Jim Francis. You may have seen some of his artwork if you have the 2nd edition BESM books. That's how I found him and his site. And from there I found his webcomic Outsider.
I've actually kept this one under my hat for a long time because of Jim's GLACIAL update schedule. There was a stretch there where he didn't put up a new page for almost two years! I didn't want to recommend it and then have there be no payoff. But now he seems to have buckled down and is updating pretty consistently on a one page a week schedule.
You may still think that's slow. And it is. But this guy is a CRAFTSMAN. One of the reasons for many of the delays in one of his longer stretches was that he was designing and "building" an entire bridge set with consoles, readouts, holographic HUD displays and a panoramic projected view of space all around in the computer so that he could view and render it from any angle needed and place his hand drawn characters into it. Did I mention that all of this was for a non-human ship and he created a consistent written language so that the displays would be in that language?
Last I checked, he also still has on his website a map of local space out to about 50
light years that uses Java and that you can rotate in all angles in 3d.
Anyway, this is a very good space opera "first contact" story with some fascinating characters, political intrigue and an awesome eye for detail.
