And my turn to start exploring AE...
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 06-06-2010, 09:43 PM - Forum: Mission Design - Replies (3)

Having earned all the crafting badges with Evangelia except the 1000- and 2000-items-made badges (which I will continue to work on, as I've decided to make IOs for many of lower-level toons that they couldn't otherwise get on their own), I'm now turning my attention to AE.  And I was just wondering if folks think a multi-mish arc based on opening a gate for Looney Toons so that he can move on in the Walk from Paragon City would be a good idea to explore.  I'm not going to try to do it right away, though -- I'm going to play with the editor and do up a couple "learning exercises" first.  But I'd like people's help in testing and whatnot.  Eventually.

  Watch Them Fall Down

Anyone have any suggestions as to what the music behind this AMV would do?

Going by the animemusicvideo.org page, it's a mix of two versions of the song "Watch Them Fall Down" by DJ Spoke.

[RFC][Plotbunny] ATTACK OF THE FLYING KILLER PSYCHO PLOT... Tiger? *Ker-tackle!*
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 06-06-2010, 02:13 AM - Forum: Hangar 13 - Replies (13)

Okay, thanks to SilverFang's rec on a magnificent Calvin and Hobbes one-shot and the fact I've been up fro 24+ hours now, I got me a plot-tigger.  No, this guy's too fiesty to be a wascally wabbit, he's a tigger.
Initial Kicker: Calvin and Susie realize they have a LOT more in common when Hobbes 'comes to life' in the presence of both of them.  No, you may not examine this too closely.  This is Bill's sandbox I'm playing in, and the fact that Susie and Calvin can see Hobbes at the same time is bending the rules as it is.
Conflict: The two still go at it like the British and the French in the Napoleonic period.  Lovely, eh?
Complications: During a class trip to the local National Parks/Wildlife Preserves (one of those really rare ones that involves an overnight campout), Calvin and Susie somehow get lost and seperated from their group.  I'm thinking a river should be involved.
Other Factors: Because it was an overnight trip and involving the great outdoors, Calvin brought Hobbes along.  Also, taking Calvin's interest in everything wild and outdoors into consideration, his parents got him a survivalist guide - not one of the boring ones, but the kind that is fully illustrated for kids with ADHD.  Calvin treated it like gospel.  Finally, Susie's a Girlscout.  She can pull her own weight, but knows that there is safety in numbers.  Plus, it helps that you got a tiger along to help, right?
Thoughts?

Putting the Lie To RIAA Claims
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 06-06-2010, 01:27 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (6)

This wonderful graphic over at Cracked.com takes RIAA claims about losses from piracy -- and the Pirate Bay in particular -- and subjects them to some fairly devastating, if elementary, arithmetic.  Put in these terms, it's a wonder anyone even believes the RIAA's estimates.

  Help with A.C.'s dress uniform
Posted by: Cobalt Greywalker - 06-05-2010, 09:45 PM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (34)

Ever since Rob mentioned it in the alt-Fenspace thread, I've been pondering precisely WHAT A.C.'s S.H.I.E.L.D. dress uniform looked like. Essentially, I've gone for something like US Navy Service Dress, but a bit flashier. The current description is included below.

While I was trying to build it up, I realised that the Supers are big on interfactional cooperation and good at public relations and as such someone like A.C. will have extras for her uniform from other factions that others won't, and the uniform itself won't be standard because of it. A.C. probably would prefer the Sailor Mars fuku or a super costume to the S.H.I.E.L.D. dress uniform.

At the moment, I'm missing contributions from three factions (the Wizards because they and A.C. are based in the Belt, the VVS, and Stellvia) but if anyone can figure out other factions that may have a reason to grant the use of recognisable elements of their uniforms I'll consider it, but there has to be an reasonable official reason for the paperwork (as noted in the writeup, because they find it funny to see how the Supers and A.C. will incorporate said element is more likely the true reason).

Please read the below description before offering extra components. It IS supposed to be an actual dress uniform.

A.C. hated wearing her Full Dress Uniform from S.H.I.E.L.D., mainly because her biomod quirks both made her devastatingly sexy and wanting to slip into a revealing wavetex micro-dress. Of course, there were all the OTHER things about it that she hated because of the regs. The Supers were remarkably anal about their rules in these cases.
What she considered one of the few good parts of the regs was the insistence that all uniformed officers and soldiers had to wear a ballistic-weave counter-pressure suit under the main uniform. The Scarlet Angel had her own take on such things, and as such had her standard active bioplastic sheathed mono-crystal diamond chainmail second skin bodysuit on.

The main components of the uniform were black dress pants, white dress shirt with midnight blue bowtie, midnight blue dress jacket with silver buttons, and midnight blue cap with black visor and silver backed black enamelled S.H.I.L.E.D. eagle. In difference to her biomod quirks, she had mirror-shined 3.5”/9cm heeled black ankle boots on.

This was where things got complicated.

As a command level officer, she was obliged to have the silver double chin strap on her cap. However, being a ‘detached duty’ officer she didn’t have the oak leaves and acorns on the visor. She had silver piping along its rim.

As an OF-8 level Great Justice Troubleshooter who was also a uniformed officer, she was required to have full epaulettes on her shoulders. This included silver tassels all around the edge rather than the braiding that would normally be there due to her various reputations.

Over her left breast were her various awards and medals. She felt it fortunate that most of her achievements were non-awardable due to security, but she still had ten of the things there, including the Ace of Aces medal with three bronze clusters.
Above them was a long double gold bar with enamelled ‘ribbons’. The gold represented the top level of qualifications (with silver and bronze following), and the enamelled ribbons showing her military qualifications. These included Orbital Drop (with gold boarder for essentially creating the discipline), Ship-master (with gold star for fleet command experience), Ground Command (with silver star for campaign command experience), Pilot (the position of the silver dots indicating fighter, bomber and recon qualifications), and Medical (with silver oak leaf for battalion command experience).

As a recognised ‘Champion’ she was required to have a full length cape. This was again in midnight blue and made of armour-cloth. The design had an embroidered SHIELD emblem in the centre, and was bordered with a ribbon in her ‘official costume’ colours. Given she didn’t HAVE an official costume (if she HAD, she’d be wearing that and dealing with other uniform regs), this was taken to be her ‘stereotypical’ outfit of black mini-dress and high heeled boots and scarlet full length trench coat. Thus, a scarlet bordered black ribbon. Due to the epaulettes she had, the cape and clasps fastened to them rather than under the shoulder straps otherwise, and kept it out of the way more.

The difference between her given rank and her practical rank caused a few problems in how it was displayed. Her epaulettes and sleeve cuffs had the four gold bands of a Naval captain, but over them was the silver star of a Brigadier. There was no star above them as she wasn’t a line officer; instead she had the ‘ship over sunburst’ from the Flag of the Fenspace Convention.

As if this wasn’t complicated enough, other factions had ‘granted’ her (mostly without telling her, and mostly because it made them laugh at the thought) the right to certain elements of their own uniforms. And because the Supers were very conscious of interfactional relations and public relations, she was obliged to wear them all.

From the Trekkies she had a Klingon style Marine baldric which draped over her right shoulder to her left hip. This was attached to the Crimson stable belt from the Warsies’ Crimson Guard formal uniform. On this hung a scarlet and gold tasselled Tessen from Hidden Asteroid on her right hip, a ceremonial bronze short Xiphos (peace bound) from the Cybers on her left.
The Senshi had (to no-one’s surprise) granted the symbol and uniform the Senshi of Mars. What this led to was a silver version of the Astronomical Symbol of Mars hanging from the chain between the cloak clasps with twin silver shoulder chains, ruby five-point stars dangling from her ears, pure white silk gloves, the aforementioned tassels to her epaulettes, silver braid embroidered around her cloak ribbon, and scarlet stripes down the outside of her pants.
The Roughriders ended up giving her a set of polished steel rowelled box spurs. The intervention of the assigned Senshi caused the rowel to be the red enamelled star of Mars. Up until it hit the other Senshi’s contribution, whereupon the rowels became rubies.

  A Con query
Posted by: Rod.H - 06-05-2010, 03:05 PM - Forum: Fenspace - No Replies

Just wondering about the 2010 Worldcon, I know on the wiki and in other places that the Fenspacers see the 2008 Worldcon as the last with the annual FenCons its place in their calendar in-conjunction with being the major political todo/qango. However what about those Fen with a fear of SPACE! the average Con-goer who would not like to have TSAB confiscate or quarantine most of their souvenirs and travel gear, those that prefer hardtech.....

I could go on but it just boils down to: Aussiecon 4/Worldcon 68 does it still happen, if so what Fenspace thing could happen there. I'd love to unveil a MakoTaxi there but I'm still trying to wrangle out an origin piece or any bit of writing from the long-term writers block I've got....oh for a traditional RR board or a targeted essay, how I've missed thee.

*wanders off to look at the cost to go http://www.aussiecon4.org.au/index.php?page=27* hmm perhaps I might contemplate being a volentold....

Simple game for that will cause much pain and suffering amongst those of us that suffer from altitis, and possibly help those suffering from writer's block.

Steps are as follows:

1. A person posts a Primary/Secondary Archetype.
2. The person who posts next has to come up with a name and short concept blurb.
3. The person then repeats step 1.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!

As an example:

Archery/Storm Summoning Corruptor

Kenneth Coginostro was a nobody. A guy with an old family name but no connections. With limited funds and no ratings, he used crappy gimmicks and a buffoonish on air persona to try to drum up some interest in his almost completely ignored WSPDR weather segment. But when a disgruntled villain attacked the studio after Ken's latest report of more cloudy days happened to be wrong for one torrential downpour filled night, Kenneth was struck by a blast of electricity while holding his signature bow and arrow...but astonishingly lived, the bow and arrow similarly failing to incinerate, and instead crackling with power. Ken woke up in a hospital and discovered that he could hear the sounds of the spirits that governed the weather...and something in the mild mannered reporter snapped. Determined to pay back everyone who ever held him back, Kenneth Coginostro took up his elemental powers and the enchanted bow and began a reign of terror known only as Reap Da' Whirlwind!

For our next contestant:

If anyone here hasn't seen Rental Magica yet, the first DVD set (out of two) is up on Rightstuf's daily deals page today.  For what its worth, I really enjoyed it, and the book that comes packaged with the DVD set is pretty neat.  Linky.  Just thought I'd mention it.

Mostly because at the moment I'm tired of the daily mission grind.
And I think I have just the story to tell...
The Ransom of Terrence Knight.
However, to make this work the way I really want I need a couple of .Costume files, one from Terr for how he wants to look and one from Sweno(?) (or who ever it is who plays Rhea) since GE is gonna be the contact for the arc.

  Forums Not Working Earlier Today

I got a couple emails about the forums crapping out entirely this afternoon/evening, and I'll admit that I was having trouble around lunchtime.  However, checking in quickly right now shows the boards working okay for me.  Is anyone continuing to have problems?  Let me know so I know whether to go annoy Yuku support or not.
