Well, I've been thinking to myself, "Exactly why would a group of Senshi join up with The Roughriders?" It's not really their schtick, after
all. After thinking about it, I got the idea that they could be a special detail personally assigned by the Boss Lady of the Senshi.
Now why would she go and do something like that? Probably because Ben did some serious good for the Senshi, I figure.
Question: what the heck did Ben do!? Maybe something to do with the fall of Crystal Osaka? Rescued someone near and dear to her or just some people that were
important? Or perhaps another incident altogether? I've had thoughts about Ben rescuing the Senshi's Queen from a Boskonian assasination attempt.
One way or another, Benjamin did something that wound up making The Roughriders automatic allies of the Senshi. To accomplish this, I would appreciate it if
someone could fill me in on everything there is to know about the Senshi in Fenspace. I know there's some stuff over in the Wiki, but being underway I
don't have the time to thoroughly research the subject by myself.
Thanks in advance!
ETA: Okay, looks like I've got a bit more time than I thought. Thank God for Holiday Routine on Sundays while underway - some of us were thinking we
weren't getting it this time for some reason. So, I've done some poking around and so far the only personage that has been mentioned to be even close
to being the leader of the Senshi is Haruhi. Now, I know she's charismatic and all, but it's pretty easy to see once you get up close what a nutbar she
is, so that phase won't last terribly long. We do know from experience, after all, how leaders with plenty of charisma but poor management skills fall out
of favor.
That said, have we settled on there being a set leader for the Senshi? I'm pretty sure I've seen her mentioned around here somewhere, I just can't
figure out where.

I'm still filling in entries for this one, but I thought I'd go ahead and put up what I had, along with the outlines for what still has to be filled
in. I'll edit this as I have time until it's complete. If anybody sees anything that's missing that they desperately want, please let me know.
Enjoy!
Custom Biomodifications
by
The Jason
Spring 2014 Catalog
Welcome. Here is a listing of my latest biomod creations, as well as all of your old favorites. As always, if you don't see what you need, I am
perfectly happy to do custom work. Just contact me with a description of what you want, and we can negotiate a deal.
Ship Hulls
Treeships - For all Tenchi Muyo fans and for those who prefer something other than the usual handwaved car or bus, we have treeships
available. Hollow and able to live in space, these hulls include various interior compartments that can be fitted out however you desire. They also supply
water and natural sewage treatment/reclamation, as well as a limited supply of electricity from photovoltaic leaves. You will need to outfit the rest of the
ship yourself, including engines, navigation, and whatever additional power your systems might require.
Worldtrees (Yggdrasils) - These are similar to our regular treeship line, but much larger. While the treeship line resembles the ships from
Tenchi Muyo, the Yggdrasil line resemble gigantic free-floating trees. The smallest would serve as a good hull for a ship with a large crew, and the
largest can contain a small colony expedition. We currently have two of these growing and of sufficient size for use; once those are gone, it will be
approximately a year before the next seedlings are ready. If you want a colony hull, reserve one of these now for a year or so in advance.
Giant Pumpkin - With a rind that concentrates metals to form a sturdy, handwaveable shell, the giant pumpkin is an interesting choice of vehicle for
those interested in fairy tales or something different. Sizes easily reach those of large carriages, and the rinds can be hollowed out and fitted with the
necessary equipment to create a workable vehicle. They can also be grown for storage sheds, and several of them can be connected for a small living area.
Life Support/Maintenance
Smoker's Friend - this hardy potted plant is a must for smokers in space, as well as being extremely useful for air filtration in general.
Several of these plants scattered around a room will keep the air within fresh and sweet, even if one of your crew is a chainsmoker. They make a wonderful
backup for any mechanical air filtration that you might employ, and help ease strain on such systems.
Sealing Shrub - Another potted shrub that can be grown aboard stations and other large facitilies, these bushes bear large, balloon-like fruits in
bright colors. Normal ventilation is not enough to disturb them, but the more intense air movement caused by breaches to space will cause the fruit to detach
and be carried along on the air to the point of leakage. Provided that the leaks are small enough, the fruit will burst around the hole, sealing it with their
sap and skins. The bright colors of both will leave an easily-identified spot for repair crews afterwards.
Unicorn Weed - Looking like a small version of kelp but made for freshwater use, this plant serves as a strong water filtration system. It can be
grown in tanks, and will remove both organic and metal contaminants from the water. Organic contaminants go towards plant growth, while metals are stored in
bulbous fruits that can be harvested and stored for later reclamation of the metals. The plant serves as another source of CO2/O2 exchange, and excess growth
can be harvested for use as compost in other gardening systems.
Cable
Fiberoptic Grapevine - When one of my customers says that he heard it on the grapevine, he means it quite literally. Grown in silica-rich soil, these
vines can be grown to pretty much any needed length.
Copper Kudzu - For those who need copper wiring, we have the copper kudzu. The latex-rich bark serves as a natural insulator, so very little needs to
be done to prepare the vine for use.
Housing and Storage
Giant Pumpkin - See Hull entry
Grocery
Beefsteak Tomatoes - Appearance-wise, these tomatoes appear typical and can be grown either in pots, in regular gardens, or hydroponically. The fruit
are large and red like typical beefsteak tomatoes would be, weighing in at one to two pounds. However, removing the thin fleshy rind of a ripened tomato will
reveal that the interior is actually a large chunk of beef
Eggplant - Not the usual purple vegetable, but actual eggs. Since most people don't have the space or the environment needed to raise chickens,
this fills a needed gap. The eggs develop in a purple shell that turns papery and opens when they're ready to be picked. Available in both white and brown
varieties.
Milkweed - As with chickens, cows aren't a common resource in Fenspace. For those who like milk, the pods of the milkweed plant will supply your
needs. Currently available in whole milk and chocolate. If there is enough interest, I will work on developing lower-fat versions.
Maple Syrup Shrub - This medium-sized potted plant has large, succulent leaves vaguely resembling those of a rubber plant, but somewhat thicker. To
use, break off several leaves, score the tops and let them drain into a pitcher. Pure maple syrup....or something very close at least.
Hens and Chicks - These are the poultry version of the beefsteak tomato. The small 'chicks' very closely resemble the original decorate plant
from which this plant was created, and the propagation is the same - a larger 'hen' will develop 'chicks' around it. As the hens mature, they
gradually lose leaves until only four remain arranged in a compass formation. These get much thicker, and when they turn white, they're ripe. Peeling off
the outer husk will reveal four boneless chicken 'breasts' ready for cooking.
Wine/Liquor
Bacchus Bush -
Champaigne Shrub -
Pets
Bonsai Ents - These tiny mobile trees stand about eight to twelve inches high and act much like ornamental birds, though much calmer and slower. As
long as fertile soil, water and sunlight are supplied, they can pretty much take care of themselves. Currently they are available in sakura, and a magnolia
version is in development.
Firebirds -
Stormcrows -
Holidays
Christmas/Yule/Solstice Trees - We are happy to supply evergreens for those who want a traditional holiday season even in space. Currently, we are
limited to the number of trees that can be grown each season, so reserve yours early. We typically deliver the trees three to four weeks in advance so that
they can reach the desired size in place. If you want a tree delivered closer to the actual holiday, please make arrangements at the time you reserve your
tree. Available in standard evergreen varieties and new for this season - trees with blinking bioluminescent 'lights'.
Aluminum Trees - For those who want something a bit more unusual and retro, we now can supply aluminum trees as well as the standard varieties. They are
currently available in silver or pink, no lights.
Ornamentals
Space Dandelion -
Roses
Canvas Rose -
Psanky Rose -
Polgara's Rose -
Starlight Rose -
Stained Glass Rose -
Corwin's Rose -
Jack Frost's Kiss Rose -
Moonlight Rose -
Clarke's Rose -
Elemental Heart Roses
Life's Flame Rose (Fire), aka Heart of the Flame - The petals of this rose are transparent, and colored in shades of red and
orange and yellow, appearing to be richly-colored stained glass. The rose is also bioluminescent; within the petals, light flickers back and forth constantly.
The effect can be seen during the day, but the true power of the effect is at night, where the light shining through the colored petals actually makes the rose
appear as though it were made out of flame. Each rose generates the faint sound of crackling and popping (an enlarged chamber in the stem, just below the
calyx, serves as a sound generator), and threaded through the scent of rose are the smells of cinnamon and woodsmoke. The flowers are also thermogenic; while
in bloom, the petals hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit, making them nicely warm to the touch to non-biomodded humans and most others. The petals ARE edible, though if
enough are eaten by a normal human, they will trigger a biomod. If candied, they taste of rose and cinnamon.
Thor's Laughter Rose (Air), aka Storm Rose, aka Heart of the Storm - Another stained glass rose, this one has petals that are
colored in various rich shades of blue. It too is bioluminescent, but unlike the Fire rose which is pretty much constantly emitting light, the Storm rose
flashes at random, and in brighter bursts - sometimes all over the rose, then at other times in streaks and bolts within the petals. It has a spicy rose scent,
overlaid with mint and a sharp tang. It actually emits negative ions and the occasional molecule of ozone; not enough to be a problem in an enclosed system,
but two or three potted roses in a regular-sized room will give the same feeling to the air that it has after a thunderstorm has passed. This is possible
because the roses are weak bioelectric generators; they can generate just enough charge to give a light electric shock, the same as you might get after
scuffing your feet on the carpet in the winter and then touching something metal. If something metal is brought VERY close to a petal, you might even see a
faint spark jump the gap. The sound generator is present on this rose as well, and produces faint cracks and rumbles, such as you might hear from a distant
thunderstorm. If tasted, most organic lifeforms will get the same reaction as if they stuck a weak battery on their tongue - it gives the same tingle/bite.
While not exactly an interesting or pleasant taste for most, some biomodded humans and sentient robots might find them so.
Sea Fire Rose (Water), aka Heart of the Sea - Appearing made of deep aquamarine stained glass with hints of pale sea green and
turquoise, the tips of this rose's petals fade to a frosted, translucent white. This rose doesn't exhibit any bioluminscence during the day at all, and
shows a slow, rhythmic pulsing of light at night - glowing faintly deep within the petals then growing brighter over the space of a minute or two, then fading
back to the background level. This is accompanied by the sound of crashing waves, white noise produced by this rose's sound chamber, and the pulsing is in
time to the waves. If grown in a system that exhibits traits of weather, the pulses/sounds become stronger and more intense during windy weather, as if the
waves were being storm-driven. The flower has a rose fragrance, but it's strongly overlaid by that of the sea; imagine a rose growing among the dunes on a
beach, and that's just about the scent produced. The petals actually secrete tiny drops of water, just enough to give a wet sheen and feel to the petals,
and tasting the petals reveals a faintly salty flavor.
Guinness Crystal Rose (Earth), aka Heart of the Land - While the other three Elemental roses are transparent stained glass, the
Earth rose is a deep, translucent emerald green (exactly the shade of the Guinness Emerald crystal). It lacks the others' flashier light displays, just
showing a steady, low-level glow by day and night. To the touch, there's only the normal softness of flower petals. But what it lacks in sight and touch,
it more than makes up for in the other three senses. It smells of roses...but also of deep forest, with rich earth and fallen leaves. Traces of honeysuckle,
apple, pear and other fruits can be detected in the scent as well, shifting - first one comes to the fore, then another. Candied petals of this rose are a real
treat, because the flavors are as varied as the smells. There's always the faint taste of rose, but some petals taste more of maple syrup, others of honey,
or apple or even faintly of wine or anise. If any of the roses will tempt a person to eat enough of the petals to cause a biomod, it will be this one. The
flavors differ even between the petals on a single rose, so it's always a surprise. This rose also has the largest, most elaborate sound chamber of the
four, and the sounds and their duration vary at random. Listening closely, you might hear the gentle sound of a babbling brook, or the wind rustling through
the leaves of a wood, or the soft drone of a bee in flight. Although very faint, this rose can even generate more elaborate sounds, like the drumming of a
woodpecker or birdsongs. Standing next one one of these rosebushes and closing one's eyes, it's quite easy to imagine that you're walking through
the woods in summer.

Hall of the Khans, Warrior Quarter
Strana Mechty
Kerensky Cluster, Clan Space
2 October 3000
The star around which the home world of the Clans spun was low in the sky as its light lit up the western side of the Hall of the Khans. The
gothic architecture of the centre of their government was not of concern to the two warriors sitting on a simple stone bench that provided the only seating on
the balcony they occupied. The Hall had many private nooks such as this one - intentionally so since it provided for the private meetings and discussions that
would frame the debates that periodically rocked the Grand Council's chamber.
Gerik N'Buta's jacket, almost seamless black leather that closely resembled snakeskin, lay on the bench next to him and he could feel
the warmth of the stone behind him through his thin white shirt. The Khan of Clan Star Adder was short for a mechwarrior, but his skin had an almost ebon black
hue that was rare among the ethnic mix that had produced his sibkho, rare but highly prized by the N'Buta bloodline as that sported by their founder. His
colleague, Kershaw Lahiri was smaller too, with the slightly disproportionate head that marked him as a product of one of the lineages focused upon producing
pilots for the Clans aerospace fighters.
"Kerlin's proposal is a good one, quiaff?" Kershaw observed. "Foresightful as a Kerensky, for all that he is a
Ward."
"Aff," his elder agreed. "Wise, to see that our intelligence services lack the data necessary to truly evaluate the situation
within the Inner Sphere. Foresightful, to delay we Crusaders the chance to invade in our lifetimes."
Kershaw started. "So long?" he asked and stood from the bench to look at his senior in astonishment. "Five years, perhaps
ten..."
"Not less than twenty five years," Gerik advised him gently. "It will take no less than two years to properly prepare the
forces required and then a long slow voyage back along the Exodus Road. Three to four years merely to begin their expedition, with Kerlin slowing them all the
way."
"That is outrageous!" The saKhan of the Star Adders was some thirty-one years old. Holding a bloodname, much less a high political
office, would extend his career considerably, but the chances that he could still call himself a warrior when he reached the age of fifty-six were remote. The
notion that Gerik N'Buta, fourteen years his elder, might do likewise was simply laughable.
"He is right." Gerik's voice was calm and barely ruffled by regret. "I do not forgive him for this, of course. To see the
Hope of Kerensky fulfilled, to see the Inner Sphere myself... This I have dreamed of for many years, Kershaw. But... Kerlin is right. We need to know and we
need to prepare. Consider - we will be engaging in a campaign more than a thousand light years from our homes against enemies that will be superior, at least
in numbers, to our own forces."
The saKhan frowned. One might rise through the ranks of other clans through nothing more than skill as a warrior, but among the Star Adders
it was expected that a senior officer understand more than elementary tactics. "I do not know what demands that would make upon our logistics," he
admitted at last. "We would need to establish a forward base... years of work."
Gerik's eyebrow crooked at the suggestion. "That is certainly one possibility," he agreed. "The fact is that no Clan has
ever considered such a feat of logistics or a conflict waged on such a tremendous scale. Perhaps the Star League's would-be successors have fragmented and
will fall readily to us one at a time. Or perhaps they have not - the reports we have gathered have been few and far between, never from reliable sources. And
even if it means that I will not live to see our return, I cannot commit to any plan that would expose us to possible disaster."
"Disaster?" Kershaw asked. "Is that not a trifle alarmist, Gerik?"
"Is it?" Gerik watched the younger man struggle with the question. "We do not know, quineg?" He shivered slightly and
noticed that the sun had dipped below the horizon and that the wall he leant against had cooled significantly. Standing, he shrugged on his jacket.
The aerospace pilot chuckled. "You are getting old, my Khan," he chided.
"Can I convince you to come back and warm my bed while we discuss this further," the forty-five year old leered mockingly and
rolled his eyes when Kershaw shook his head. "You must be right. When I was your age all you young warriors loved my company."
"You are simply not my flavour of choice," Kershaw defended himself, moving to open the door back into the hall.
Gerik shrugged. "You are almost as staid as some of the civilian castes," he protested, following his junior Khan.
"There is no need to be insulting," grumbled Kershaw. "On another subject, some of the scientists tell me that the Goliath
Scorpions are onto something new in the lasers field," he commented, shifting the subject less likely to attract attention in the more crowded interior of
the Hall of the Khans.
"Oh?" Gerik said, lechery forgotten. "That must have slipped past me. What are they talking about?"
"How would you like an extended range laser with twenty percent more power and range, but only eighty percent as heavy as the old
Newharts?" Kershaw asked with a grin. "I can assure you, I would like a pair of those on my Kirghiz."
Gerik's smile was that of a predator. "Hah! I like the idea very much, Kershaw. We will want to have those ready for when our
respective offspring are able to begin our Crusade into the Inner Sphere."
"We shall have to get hold of them first," cautioned Kershaw. "The Khans of the Scorpions are well aware of the advantages of
such weapons. They will not relinquish them lightly so I wish to take my Keshik and obtain them myself."
"Kershaw," the elder Khan warned as they descended one of the broad, shallow steps that connected the many galleries of the Hall of
the Khans. "There is a time and place for a Khan to take the battlefield. Any Star Colonel can bid a simple trial like that. How else will they learn
enough to step into our shoes one day?"
"Hn," Kershaw grunted unhappily. "I have hardly had any time in the cockpit since I last tested to keep my warrior
status." He considered for a moment. "Since I have been outbid, how about sending Edwina Banacek? She has been spoiling for a fight since the whole
business with the Coyotes, and if she sharpens the Seventy-Third any more, they will start cutting themselves."
Gerik chuckled. "You must be really annoyed with the Scorpions. You know they are firmer on Zellbrigen than we are and Edwina makes the
two of us look like Jade Parrots."
Kershaw squawked derisively and then sneered at the scowls directed at him by a pair of warriors in Jade Falcon colours. "I think that
Edwina might be quite useful," he said. "If she can handle this business with the Scorpions then she might be just the person to build us a permanent
opposing force to train against?"
"Are Kappa Galaxy not enough for you?" asked Gerik. The secondline Galaxy was often used as a proving ground for newly graduated
warriors, somewhere where they could show their merits before being moved up into the frontline units. What units were not on detachment elsewhere often
provided opposition for warrior tests and Trials of Position.
Kershaw shook his head. "Kappa is organised in the manner of all Clan soldiers," he explained. "To prepare to fight the Inner
Sphere we need something like the unit that Khan Ward proposed, a force organised and equipped like the old Star League Defense Force, like the troops of the
Inner Sphere, for us to test our fangs upon. And we need them to fight dirty, because if the old SLDF manuals in our archives are any guide, they would use any
tactic or weapon that worked. We must assume that the Inner Sphere will do likewise."
"Edwina is the right person for that," Gerik snorted and gestured for Kershaw to precede him into his office, an anonymous little
room like any of a hundred others in the Star Adder wing of the Hall. There was no decoration inside, only a desk with one simple chair behind it and a small
computer sat on the surface. "I do not think that our good friends in the other clans would approve however. After the Coyote scandal the last thing we
should do is give them ammunition to use against us."
"That is the beauty of what I have in mind," Kershaw explained. "I said earlier that we would need a forward base. When we
find a suitable world, we can establish the training unit there and unless the other Clans stumbled over it, they would never know what we are doing
there."
"You mean to keep it a secret?"
"Absolutely. A secret colony, one that can fill many roles for us," nodded Kershaw enthusiastically. "Imagine it, Gerik!
Factories to support and replenish our touman. Farms to feed them. Training grounds to prepare them for the battles to come. And all placed only a few jumps
short of the Inner Sphere, so that we can stage from it directly into the invasion."
The Khan nodded. "You have vision, Kershaw. But you must find a suitable world first, and colonising it without the other Clans knowing
will be hard."
"We have twenty-five years," Kershaw said simply. "Even by taking small and discreet actions much can be accomplished in such
a span of time."
"A quarter century at least," the Khan agreed. "Perhaps more. It is unlikely that either of us will lead the Star Adders when
that day comes. Tell me your plans, Kershaw."
Kershaw gathered his thoughts. "We can begin simply," he said. "Obtaining the lasers is a good start - once we have them, we
can pressure our scientist caste to start applying their principles to other weapons. If Scorpion scientists can create such a weapon then we must drive our
own to surpass them in creativity. When the time comes for the technicans to retool their factories to produce the new weapons, we can easily hide the parts
for additional factories. In the meantime though, we need to find our forward base. Eric Lahiri -" The Star Adder's Naval Adjutant and effectively
commander of their fleet of warships and jumpships "- was in the same sibko as I. She can slip a small flotilla out of sight and send it out to find a
suitable place to begin from."
Gerik nodded. "Somewhere near what was the Rim Worlds Republic, or perhaps the outer reaches of the Draconis Combine," he advised.
"We should not extend ourselves too far, but areas near the border between the Combine and the Commonwealth will probably be well
patrolled."
"That would make sense," agreed Kershaw. "We can keep things small for now. When Edwina has done with playing with the
Scorpions - and any other clan whose scientists are developing useful weapons - we can assign her to help the Wolves train their spies. It is an honorable
assignment and will let tempers cool but few of our cousins will see it in that light. No one will be surprised if she drops out of sight after a task like
that - they will assume that she was disgraced and chose to become solahma. She and those like her will be at the heart of our preparations,
quiaff"
"Aff." Gerik looked at the desk in front of him. "There is another possibility that this forward base should be considered
for."
"What?" Kershaw asked.
Gerik smiled humorlessly. "If the other Clans decide one day to destroy us," he said. "Then it might well need to become our
last refuge. Make sure that it is a worthy world of such a destiny, Kershaw. And well hidden also."

I've been thinking about it lately and my entire family, with the exception of one or two individuals, are all fen enough to come on up once things seem to
be stable enough and opportunities abound. Also, I feel that there is the need for about two more AI's over at 36 Atalante...
Momma Jones
As the woman that mothered Benjamin, she's about as nutty as he is in her own way. Her time spent as a flower child shows clearly in her
fashion sense: jean skirts and lots of colorful stone and sea shell beads. It was her that pushed the most to get the Family up into Fenspace, and there she
has taken on the overall management of household services at 36 Atalante, from ensuring that everyone's got clean sheets and toilet paper, to assuring the
quality of the (mostly) tex-mex menu at the chow halls.
William Jones
Benjamin's father isn't really a Fen, per say. However, he is an excellent computer engineer and has taken a great interest in using
handwavium in combination with experimental computer design to produce actual business machines for Fenspace. With Mr. Jones's highly objective
methodology in utilizing handwavium, his creations tend to be very low in quirk and highly effective in information processing, making them into ideal machines
for research and development among Fen and even wave-friendly Mundane buisnesses.
Reggy 'Radmobile' Jones
Reggy has a penchant for three things: Big Explosions, Big Sound Systems, and Big Robots. One of his first and most resoundingly succesful
projects was to recreate the Megas XLR from the animated series of the same name. With this has come The Roughriders first true mecha contingent with a real
loose cannon in charge (as a result, these are the people Benjamin turns loose when something needs to be hammered with overkill-levels of prejudice).
Jimmy Jones
Jimmy is one of the few to try out for a biomod and came up pretty damn lucky. As a Dark Elf, he is ideally suited for sneaking around in the
shadows, but his true love and joy is physical therapy for Roughriders lucky enough to be recovering from serious injuries (something that he puts his
incredibly nimble fingers to excellent use).
Robby Jones
Robby is another engineer (the family is rife with them) and has taken on the overall roll at 36 Atalante. While Benjamin handles the R&D
end of things, Robby oversees the maintenance of the various ships and equipment at the asteroid base.
Carl Jones
Before coming to Fenspace, Carl had achieved a master's degree in Asian Studies and one of his greatest loves is the study of martial
arts. Upon arrival at 36 Atalante, he wasted no time in setting up a dojo on the base and began to instruct any who would come in his unique blend of mixed
martial arts.
Mackenzie Jones
Mackenzie gets along very well with vicious and oversized creatures - usually the kaiju-scale ones. Somehow, whenever a biomodded critter
gets to be this size, Mackenzie comes a-running to add the unrully critter to his "Monster Island" - a hollowed out asteroid inside which all his
monsters frolic and play in an idealic setting. Of course, every now and then The Roughriders see the strategic use in 'loosing' one of them nearby an
enemy holding.
Zackary 'Z' Cochrane
Z is the engineering AI and, until Robby had been acquired by The Roughriders, was the sole person in cahrge of the maintenance of the
force's ships. He can be grouchy at times, but he also has a hilarious sense of self-depreciative humor.
Ruri
This AI, taking on the appearance of a bored girl with silver hair and amber eyes, is the majordomo of 36 Atalante's mainframe. Like the
character from Martian Successor Nadesico, she has a very dry and clever wit hidden under her bored apearance, and she also cares very deeply for the people
who have gone out of their way to be her friend.
