  Artist Wanted
Posted by: offsides - 10-03-2003, 02:18 PM - Forum: Marketplace - No Replies

(Yes, I know it doesn't quite belong here, but there's no place better I can think of.)
I'm looking for an artist to work on a project that I'm doing primarily for fun, though it may end up making a little money in the long run. I don't have a lot of cash to put into it right now, but I'm willing to discuss payment. My main concern is that I need it soon, and I know a lot of the artists out there are already backud up 'till forever Smile
So if you're an artist with time to commit to a (hopefully) small project and are interested discussing it further, drop me an e-mail (check my user info, there's a link on my homepage).
Thanks,
Offsides

An odd sort of flight song?
Posted by: The Wanderer - 10-02-2003, 01:53 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (17)

With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You're a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite!
When you send it flyin' up there
All at once you're lighter than air
You can dance on the breeze
Over 'ouses and trees
With your first 'olding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Let's go fly a kite!
===
"Let's Go Fly a Kite", from Disney's version of "Mary Poppins".
Not much in the chorus, but those verses look interesting. I'm not entirely certain what this would do for Doug; it sounds like a kind of flight song, but the "feet on the ground" line might have some odd effects, at least perceptual ones. Maybe it takes his consciousness up flying in the visible form of a kite, while his body stays behind on the ground?

  Not safe Santa song
Posted by: Ace Dreamer - 10-01-2003, 09:01 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (9)

I don't know where this comes from, and Google didn't help:
"I Gave My Soul to Santa"
I gave my soul to Santa
He put it in his sack
And now that he has got it
He will not give it back.
I sent it in a letter
Addressed to the North Pole
...
And there my memory runs out. It might have been a monolog or blank verse, rather than song lyrics, but I am not at all sure... I think I heard it about 10+ years ago, maybe from one of the alternative humour shows (on radio?).
Still, if it _is_ a (rather black) song, I would like to know what Doug's talent would make of it! [grin]

  Back on Track

Apparently my muse just took an extra week in Myrtle Beach, and got back yesterday. I began revising my characterization problem today, and ended up with a net gain of 3K on the draft (as the subhead shows now). All is well.

  Well, my suggestions...

"As Good as it Gets" by Grand Theft Audio (Gran Turismo 3 soundtrack) - all I can say is if his metagift locks onto the chorus, you've got a damned inspirational song.
"Mother Dawn" By Billy Idol (Cyberpunk) - umm...well, this one screams Sailor Moon to me.
"99 Red Balloons" Goldfinger Remix - well, that could be messy, depending on where his metagift kicks in.
"Alive" by POD - Resurrection, healing? I dunno.
and now, for some downright silly ones:
From the Arrogant Worms:
"The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" - if for no other reason than having a pirate ship as backup would be cool.
"Santa's going to kick your ass" - hey, he wanted safe Christmas songs, didn't he?
From the Animaniacs:
"I Am The Very Model of a Cartoon Individual" - oh come on, do I even need to explain?
"The Anvil Song" - again, fairly obvious
"A Quake! A Quake!" - wait, maybe he shouldn't try that one.
and finally, from Monty Python:
"Spam." - 'nuff said.

  Quick Request
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 09-30-2003, 07:06 PM - Forum: Drunkard's Walk II: Robot's Rules of Order - Replies (4)

While reviewing extant DW2 material, I raised a question for myself that I can't seem to answer for myself. Is the explanation of "gravity gun" for Largo's shockwave blast canon or fanon? Does anyone know?
Thanks.

  Chapter 13, Teaser #6

"Anything else, Leon?" Fuko looked up over her shoulder from her sketchboard at the ADP inspector.Leon rubbed his chin and stared at the drawing on the board. "No,I think that's it.""Right," Fuko said, and slid the pencil in her hand carefully into its proper place in her kit. She released the clips holding the page on the board, slid the sheet of paper off, and laid it next to three other drawings on the table next to her. "I'd ask you if you were trying to trick me into drawing an American-style comic book for you, except about 7:30 last night I heard a voice in the thunder and ended up curled into a ball, whimpering." She shivered, and Leon put his hand on her shoulder."You and most of Megatokyo," he said softly."Well, yeah, but not being alone doesn't exactly help me feel better about it," she snapped, and he quickly withdrew his hand."Sorry," she said in a far less angry tone. "Just the thought ofit... The gods are supposed to be remote, distant from ordinaryhumans. Not standing in the streets yelling at them.""She just *claimed* to be a goddess," Leon offered. "Doesn't mean she actually was one."Fuko laughed sadly. "Oh, she was, Leon, believe me. The fear of the gods lurks in every human soul, and mine responded to her." She shook her head slowly. "Hell of a thing for an atheist to say, huh? I guess I better start attending services again.""If you say so," he replied, dubious. She turned her swivel chair around to face him more directly. "Istill can't get over how you were so close to her, and were unaffected."Leon shrugged. "Well, I was distracted by everything else going on." He fingered the folded sunglasses hung on the breast pocket of his shirt and grimaced. "Plus my ears were ringing like mad from all the loud noises already -- regular thunder, sonic booms, that one woman... screaming, for lack of a better word. I didn't actually *hear* the voice in the thunder that everyone else did."Fuko giggled, her entire countenance brightening again. "And here I was, thinking you were some kind of superman for standingup to it at such close range." With a smile, she turned back toher kit and began closing it up.Leon snorted. "Yeah, right. Some superman. I was lucky to leave that war zone under my own power. If any of then had decidedI was some kind of threat, I'd probably be a grease spot now."Still fitting pencils and other tools of her trade back into thekit box, Fuko said, "I thought you said you shot one with yourEarthshaker.""I did," Leon replied. "Apparently that wasn't enough to qualify me as a serious threat." He reached into his pocket and pulled out the flattened bullet. With a quiet little "click" he laid it on the table next to the drawings. Fuko looked at the source ofthe noise, raised her eyebrows and looked at him. The corner ofher mouth twitched, and finally she cooed, "Poor baby! Your big,bad gun isn't up to the job any more.""Fuko," he growled."You know, there are treatments for that now... therapy and drugsthat can do wonders.""Fuko!" She was laughing outright now, and Leon felt an unfamiliar rush of heat in his cheeks. "Stop. Please."Laughter subsided back into spurts of giggling. "Oh well, sinceyou asked so nicely.""Thank you," he said, trying to gather the shreds of his dignityback together. "I doubt anything short of an antitank weaponwould have worked on those women, Fuko. I tell you this, either they build really strong buildings in the Loon's world, or the construction and insurance companies are making out like bandits.""Probably both," she said.

  Powers from mistakes?
Posted by: Stephen Mann - 09-29-2003, 09:13 PM - Forum: General DW Chatter - Replies (16)

Bob,
You've said in the past that Doug's powers come from how he interprets the song, not necessarily from what the song actually says.
Now, given that many rock singers slur their words when singing, people often misunderstand exactly what was said/sung.
www.kissthisguy.com/
So, does Doug have any powers that come from misunderstood lyrics?

As those of you who have been following the file size notes at the top of the main pages have probably noticed, progress on chapter 13 has ground to a halt. One of my prereaders has raised a valid issue, and I'm trying to talk my muse into dealing with it. Sorry.

  Digitally Remastering the 'Classics'
Posted by: Draconan - 09-29-2003, 05:59 AM - Forum: Anime Music Videos - Replies (1)

Hello again, all.
As to the title of this thread, by classics I mean the days of LDs, VCRs and the Amiga Video Toasters. Editing and laying tracks was a bit trickier back then, especially attempting the 'Fun with 2 VCRs' method. I remember a few of the better ones(I even have them on tape somewhere):
Moody Blues - "Your Wildest Dreams": Multiple Titles
Wierd Al - "Slime Creatures from Outer Space": Multiple Titles
When In Rome - "The Promise" : Ah! My Goddess!
Sting - "Fields of Gold" : Nausicca/Laputa
Mike & the Mechanics - "Why Me?" : Nausicca
Mike & the Mechanics - "Blame" : Sol Bianca
Sarah Brightman - "Seven Seas" : Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water
Queen - "The Show Must Go On" : Gall Force (freakin' awesome!)
Pink Floyd - "Comfortably Numb" : Akira
Blue Oyster Cult - "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" : Grey
Some of these are nearly 10 years old. (eek) Accolades to the creators of these fine works. Do they exist somewhere on the net? If not, they should, IMHO.
There. I said it. I feel better.
