[OOC][Notice] I may be a bit uneven in posting for a few weeks
Posted by: robkelk - 04-09-2019, 06:38 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (5)

Just so nobody's surprised if I don't reply to things in my usual relatively-quick turnaround time.

I know my rhythms, and I'm already feeling the spring blahs setting in. (The 2" of snow we got today doesn't help...) I might just decide to say "screw it, I'm not logging on today" a few times in the next little while.

Nothing to worry about, it's just how I am.

EDIT: If you really need me, well... Bob has my email address.

  [OOC][Brainstorming] Marked by the Powers-That-Be
Posted by: robkelk - 04-08-2019, 07:28 AM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (3)

I know I'm riffing off of Bob's fanfic here... Characters that are of interest to Powers, or beloved by Powers, or protected by Powers get the symbol of those Powers associated to them somehow. Usually, this means other Powers treat the symbols as warning signs - "Hands off this one, s/he is one of mine" - but a few will take them as challenges. And if Salem can detect them, she'll treat people with them as high-priority targets, simply because of her hatred of the Powers.

So, who has one, or is likely to have one?

As BA mentions in this post, Ben has the "Grand Valknut" associated to him in Yggdrasil's records, marking him as of interest to Odin.

Then there's the circled-pawprint that is Cat Sith's mark. Two characters received that sign before being brought into the Metacontinuity: Akari and Aria.

The Sailor Senshi have their heart-shape-influenced astrological symbols, Sakura has her crowned-winged-heart, and Washuu has her crab, each showing that they're their own Powers.

Skuld's symbol is the circled-mallet. As yet, she hasn't gifted it to anyone in the Metacontinuity... or, if she has, we haven't seen it. (Maybe Nene Romanova, wherever she is, will receive Skuld's symbol. Maybe Kazari Uiharu will. Maybe some other techno-heroes will, too. But, as yet, they haven't.)

Keiichi would have Belldandy's symbol. I have no idea what that symbol is.

Rob doesn't have one, nor does Hyoga; they've been remade by Hvergelmir instead. Once they start noticing the Powers' symbols (they have Skuld's glasses and thus can see such things), Rob will come up with a winged-droplet for the two of them to wear in circumstances where showing the symbol of one's Power is appropriate, but it won't have any eldritch or occult significance. Anybody can draw a symbol, but if it isn't applied by a Power, then it's just a picture.

post-Godzilla Threshold (fire): Supernova by Within Temptation
Posted by: classicdrogn - 04-06-2019, 08:27 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - No Replies

Sometimes, you need finesse. Sometimes, you need power. Sometimes, you need to fight Vegita. This is for that last one.

(non-embedded)

Effect: multiple-nuclear-bombs-per-second level fire/heat/force projection, resistance to same, hypersonic flight that kicks in a few seconds before the explosion aura starts up

Note that this is not something Doug or the surroundings are guaranteed to survive using entirely intact; supernovas tend to be rough on the star as well as nearby planets. It will most likely need to tap into a ley line nexus, or perhaps direct conversion of matter to energy (by the pound, and not just one. More like "bring a backpack full of rocks if you don't want to use up body mass after emptying your digestive tract.") It definitely has a drastic mental effect, with everything but his immediate purpose getting drowned in the rush and strain of directing so much power at once, and when it's over he's apt to crash hard even in the best case. That said, sometimes the situation has crossed the Godzilla Threshold, and then Godzilla calls in Ultraman and the Power Rangers, and then they look around for anyone else nearby and say "HELP!"

AO3 Nominated for Related Work Hugo
Posted by: LilFluff - 04-05-2019, 07:26 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

The list of nominees for the 2019 Hugos as been released (Link to List of Hugo Award Nominees) and in the Related Works category is AO3 (or An Archive Of Our Own). Jennifer Mace over on twitter did up a thread of reasons both historical and from the past year reasons to consider AO3 for Best Related Work. The one that probably surprised me the most was that they'd successfully migrated a half terabyte database, I knew the site was big, but 617gb big?

Now to go and peruse the rest of the list of nominees to fill out my already too massive To Be Read list.

(Thought I'd try to make a thread for the weird and interesting science posts people run across)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30922800

Skrillex reduces mosquito bites.  "The electronic song "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" reduces host attack and mating success in the dengue vector Aedes aegypti."

I know that it popped up in the news on 4/1, but it is an actual paper.

A song of very specific utility

Because I happened to post it over on the Eyrie Productions forum:

For the duration of the song, any Alces alces (moose in North America, elk in Eurasia) in a roadway in front of a vehicle in which Doug is traveling are safely transported to the side of the road, before the vehicle gets within eyesight of them.

  Sailor Moon Live On Broadway
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 04-01-2019, 06:42 PM - Forum: Drunkard's Walk S: Heart of Steel - Replies (4)

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live opened at the Playstation Theatre on Times Square in New York on Friday.  I kid you not.  Judging by the information in this Theatermania article, it appears to be a Sera Myu musical made for the American stage as part of the 25th anniversary of the show.

SyFy Wire's review of the show is disturbingly effusive, and Theatermania's coverage is similarly gushing, but honestly, after watching the clip on this page, all I could do was cringe at the performance.  This is not going on my "must see" list, or even "see if I must".
