This November 11 will be the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I.
Instead of the usual request to take a moment of silence to remember the veterans and the fallen on the day itself, I thought I'd mention a 22-year-old man named Hugh Cairns.
Quote:On 1 November 1918, while Sergeant Cairns was serving with the 46th Infantry Battalion near Valenciennes in France, a German machine gun opened fire on his platoon as it advanced. Single-handed, he attacked the enemy position and captured the gun, using a Lewis light machine gun to kill the crew. Later, when progress was blocked again, he charged another group of German positions, killing 12 of the enemy and capturing 18 others along with two machine guns. When further resistance was encountered from enemy machine guns and artillery, Cairns, though wounded, led a successful effort to outflank and eliminate the defenders. Cairns’s small party inflicted many casualties and captured about fifty of the enemy and all of their guns. A subsequent patrol in which he participated forced 60 more enemy soldiers to surrender. It was while disarming this group of prisoners that Cairns was wounded again, this time severely. Although he still managed to open fire and kill many of his assailants, he was overwhelmed by about 20 of the other enemy prisoners and collapsed from weakness and the loss of blood. Cairns died the following day.
Sergeant Cairns was the last Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during World War I.
Also, did you know? It was in 1931 that Canada moved Thanksgiving from November to October in order for that holiday to be a separate event, setting aside November 11 as a day for remembrance.

| Netflix's Castlevania Season 2 |

Wow. Netflix is hitting it out of the park this season. Haunting of Hill House, Daredevil and now Castlevania.
I won't spoil it, because damn that season climax is all kinds of awesome, but I will say that if you have a tolerance (or appreciation) for bloody violent anime give this a watch. There is a lot of talking for the first 6 episodes but then the payoff... the payoff is perhaps the single most satisfying single episode of an anime I have seen for quite some time. Not since the ending of Fullmetal Alchemist.

So, I wonder what computers or OSes that Doug has experiences with. What was the first computer that he first programmed on? Is there an old 8-bit computer system he has fondness for? Or programming languages that he prefers?
This was prompted from watching some youtube videos restoring old 8 bit era computers.

"You do not understand, human. You no longer live your life
according to the dictates of Destiny. You have been touched by
the Fates -- you are an *adjunct* to them, their agent and
antithesis both, whether you know it or not."
This fine October night I had barely gotten to the meadow where I
usually did my surveillance summonings when -- finally! -- one of
the stalker centaurs left the Forbidden Forest and galloped up to
me. But instead of greeting me, introducing himself or otherwise
being anything *close* to social, he instead started raking me
over the coals because I somehow messed up their astrological
calculations. Apparently my gravitic mass was sufficient to sway
the stars and planets from their usual courses and send them
dancing willy-nilly across the sky in ways that deeply offended
the centaurs.
Naturally I called bullshit on this silliness. Oddly, this did
not endear me to the as-yet-unidentified Greco-Roman hexapod. In
response he instead began to lecture me on why my very existence
was an insult to any right-thinking seer of the future.
I heroically restrained myself from rolling my eyes as he worked
himself up to the point that I had to step back to avoid being
showered in humanoequine spittle.
"Your very presence destroys Destiny, breaks Fate, changes
what-must-be to what-you-need as the world around you dances to
the tune you play," the centaur growled, clenching his fists and
stomping with one front hoof as if to punctuate the seriousness
of his accusation. I yawned at the theatrics. "You may have
once been a normal wizard," he continued, "but no more. Your
every movement is infused with the energies of Fate."
I snorted. "I *beg* your pardon, Trigger! I was *never* a
'normal' wizard. And for your information, I haven't been
*touched* by Fate -- I've been *kissed*." I stopped and
reconsidered. "Well, four kisses and a handshake."

When Ikuko left the dining room after sitting us down there, I
turned to Usagi and placed one of my spare iPods in front of her,
along with a set of vintage 2025 Skullcandy earbuds. "Here you
go."
She picked it up and turned it over in her hands. "Huh? What's
this?"
"That, teishi, is an iPod Zoom. It's like a Walkman, only
smaller and with a lot more music on it."
Usagi frowned at the device, which at about a third the size of a
pack of cigarettes was probably smaller than any music player
she'd ever seen before. "How much more?"
I chuckled. "Remember I said I had something like thirty
thousand songs in my collection?" She nodded and I went on.
"There's about fifteen thousand songs on there."
I'm going to miss Usagi-chan's wild takes when she gets older and
jaded, but for the moment I enjoyed the wide eyes and the sudden
fumbling grasp. "How far in the future is it from?" she finally
managed to get out.
"The first version of this device will come out in less than ten
years; this one is from maybe a decade after that. Here," I
said, rescuing the iPod before she dropped it, "let me show you
how to work it."
